'Almost anyone could fall into debt problems' says Debt Advisory Centre

0
0
Wednesday 5 September, 2012
Some might think that people with debt problems have brought it on themselves, but in reality, almost anyone has the potential to get into debt problems because of unforeseen events. That's the message from the debt specialists at Debt Advisory Centre .

Debt Advisory Centre says that debt problems very often come about because of a change in circumstances and not because people have gone on a spending spree. Illness, divorce, a business failing - these are the sad events behind debt problems that people bring to Debt Advisory Centre.

Yes, there are cases of people who have over-committed themselves with credit too, but they often only need help when something unexpected happens, making it impossible to repay their existing debt.

Break-ups

The break-up of a relationship can seriously dent your finances and leave you in debt, especially if you need to find somewhere new to live, or pay for a divorce. Paying your own way in the world is often far more expensive than sharing bills with someone else. Sometimes people find they are saddled with their ex-partner's debts - in some cases, debt they didn't even know their partner had.

Loss of income

We know that work issues like redundancy result in a loss of income that makes it difficult to repay existing debts. Being out of work can force people to take on more debt just to get by and being out of work for a long time allows those debts to grow. A lot of people are in that situation at the moment, given the current economic climate.

Business failure

Businesses fail every day in the UK. If the business you work for, or your own business, fails it can result in serious debt for the company and owners, and potentially for staff who are laid off. There is never any guarantee that a business will succeed - just look at the number of well-known brands that have been forced off the high street recently.

Helping out family

Well-intentioned family members may lend money to their loved ones. This has been happening more and more since the financial crisis, because lenders have tightened their lending criteria. However well-intentioned a loan to a family member or partner may be, people do end up with debt problems of their own from trying to help someone out who couldn't afford their own debt.

Health issues

People with a partner, or offspring, with health problems, or with health problems of their own, may find they have more expenses to consider than other people. It isn't difficult to see how a health problem could lead to debt problems further down the line, when you consider the cost of treatment, transport to appointments, purchasing specialist equipment and the financial impact of potentially being unable to work.

How you deal with debt could change your life

A spokesperson for Debt Advisory Centre commented:

"A change in circumstances can happen to anybody, rich or poor. Of course, how you deal with debt can change your life too.

"Major life events, like serious illness and redundancy, can affect finances and lifestyle dramatically. Lifestyle changes like these can even cause depression - making it even more difficult to find the resources and the motivation needed to deal with a debt problem.

"If you are struggling with debt, getting in touch with your lenders and explaining the difficulties you are facing is the right thing to do. People might need an extra bit of help to do that, so Debt Advisory Centre is there to help.

"Financial setbacks happen to all kinds of people from all walks of life. Anybody's circumstances could change for the worse. But if you do get into debt problems because of a setback, it's in your hands to change things for the better. Debt Advisory Centre is there to help people in debt, whatever their reason."

Bristol Green Capital launches £15,000 green IT competition

Thursday 6 September, 2012
Bristol Green Capital Partnership is calling on all budding techies to submit their green IT ideas to the Green Learning Cloud competition and be in with a chance to win up to £15,000 developing their project.

The ideas need to link to social media and they need to be clear about the outcomes they are hoping to achieve, eg. reducing car journeys or calculating carbon emissions. Or they might invite others to get involved and share their good ideas.

Darren Hall, Bristol Green Capital Manager, says: “We want to set up a Green Learning Cloud linked to our website - a virtual online space where people can be inspired to take action on climate change, carbon reduction, energy efficiency and many other issues.

“Bristol has a wealth of talented and creative people bursting with great ideas and we’re hoping that with a pot of £15,000, it will give us the opportunity to gather some of the best web and mobile platform ideas and bring them to life.”

Cllr Guy Poultney, Cabinet Member for Communities said: "This competition combines the strengths of Bristol's green and technology sectors, two areas where we are leading the way on the international stage. But to stay ahead we must keep investing in the ideas and people that will shape our city in the future. I hope the Green Learning Cloud competition will therefore attract some high calibre entries."

The final decision will be taken by a panel, including a web specialist, a marketing expert and representatives of the Green Capital Steering Group.

Ideas should be submitted on the Green Capital website, www.bristolgreencapital.org, where they can be viewed and rated by the public. The more popular the idea, the greater consideration they will be given by the panel. The current favourite on the website is an idea for a 'Week in the Life of Green Bristol' film that will be comprised entirely of footage sent in or inspired by people, showing how they tackle green issues and approach sustainable living.

The closing date for the competition is September 30th. To find out more about the competition and look at some of the ideas already submitted, visit the ‘About the Dialogue’ page - http://bristolgreencapital.dialogue-app.com.

Friday 7 September, 2012
Chelston Direct , the online outdoor retailer, has grown its sales for the fifth consecutive year. Since starting in 2005 the Somerset based company has seen strong demand for its outdoor clothing, surf and ski wear.

This year has seen the company increase its winter offering to include Helly Hansen footwear, Orage snowboard clothing and Teva footwear.

Rob Simon, Managing Director of Chelston Direct, described the organisation’s position as, "in line with expectations" and claimed he is confident regarding the rest of the financial year.

Despite some of the worst weather conditions for outdoor retailers for many years; a mild winter followed by a cold, wet summer, the retailer has managed to achieve record sales.

Mr Simon added, "We had an excellent Christmas at Chelston Direct last year, so we’re hoping 2012 will be the same.”

The growth comes off the back of substantial investment in technology, security, warehousing and offices. The company has doubled its storage capacity and improved distribution efficiency.

Chelston Direct also saw a good uptake in its next day delivery service and ‘collect from store’ option.

‘We have found that many customers enjoy the convenience of receiving their orders within 24 hours. They also like our 2 hour time slot delivery notification, so they don’t have to stay in all day.’

Chelston Direct’s Managing Director believes that online retail will continue to see strong growth for many years as customer enjoy the convenience of shopping online.

Genpower Ltd is now well into the fourth year of affiliation with the manufacturing giant Hyundai corp., which has seen Genpower act as the UK's sole importer and distributor for Hyundai power products and equipment. And now, nine months into a very successful year, Genpower have decided to look back at what have been the most popular products amongst its customers. Making the decision as to which machines should get the award for popularity was relatively easy, with one range of generators flying well above the rest- the Hyundai Camping Leisure Inverter Generators. The leisure generators have been renowned for their hardiness and reliability, with many happy customers calling them 'top class' and claiming that they 'will never let you down!'.

It's easy to see why these leisure inverter generators have become the easy favourites; with their extremely sleek and well designed outlook and their vast range of advanced technological features they are unbeatable! One of the most appreciated features of these machines, present in all six of the Hyundai inverter generators, is their amazing pure sine wave technology. This allows the user to power up sensitive electrical equipment, such as laptop and mobile phone chargers, safe in the knowledge that sensitive internal components and circuitry will not become damaged.

The six generators in the Hyundai inverter range include the HY1000Si, HY2000Si, HY2000SEi, HY3000Si, HY3000SEi and the HY3600SEi. The machines each differ in terms of either their power output or starting method. Starting with a maximum power output of 1kw and going all the way up to a maximum power output of 3.4kw, you will definitely find the ideal inverter generator for all your power needs within this range, so whether you just need to charge your leisure battery or power your whole motorhome the ideal machine will be waiting at Genpower for you. Three of the inverter generators, the SEi's, host an electric start option meaning that they can be started with extreme ease. The user has the choice of three different starting methods for these three machines depending on their preference. These starting methods include a manual recoil start, electronic key start and a remote control key start. The remote control key start allows the generator to be started from a distance of up to 20 metres away by simply pressing a button on the key fob twice, making for a very simple start-up!

Each of the inverter generators are extremely lightweight and portable, with the HY1000Si weighing in at an extremely small and manageable 13kg! This allows the generator to be carried to wherever the power is needed with ease and means that transportation of these compact machines should never pose a problem.

Saturday 8 September, 2012
Sending a small parcel abroad can make all the difference to an uncertain gap year traveller, according to the UK's largest online parcel delivery service.

Following the introduction of the £9,000 cap on university tuition fees this year, travel industry experts have predicted that there will be a sharp increase in the number of young people taking gap years. Australia is expected to be the top destination for thousands of British youngsters as usual, but just because Oz is more than 10,000 miles away doesn't mean parents need to lose touch with their sons and daughters, according to Bolton-based international delivery specialist Parcel2Go.

The firm has called on the parents of gap year students to discover how simple it really is to send a parcel to Australia through the internet.

"For many young people this will be the first time that they have been away from home for an extended period and understandably there will be mixed emotions," said Richard Mercer, marketing director at Parcel2Go. "By sending a parcel abroad, parents can remind young travellers that they are not all on their own - this can be a great comfort to someone who has suddenly found themselves in a strange country on the other side of the world.

"A simple parcel, perhaps containing a book, a few treats from home and a letter, can make a huge difference. And thanks to the cheap international delivery services available through Parcel2Go, sending a package to another country, whether that's Australia, New Zealand, India or South Africa, is quick and simple."

A range of domestic and international parcel delivery services are available through the Parcel2Go website. Experience courier companies including UPS, CityLink, Parcelforce and FedEx offer express and economy options to ensure all need are catered for.

Diet Chef Reveals How Your Dinner Date Could Make You Fat

0

Saturday 8 September, 2012
If you’re struggling to lose weight – don’t give up on the diet yet, new research suggests that one of the top tips to helping you lose weight may be as simple as just getting a new lunch buddy!

Research published in the British Journal of Nutrition by psychologists at the University of Birmingham monitored 100 women at a lunch buffet and found that people unconsciously mirrored eating habits of the people around them even if they were trying to lose weight.

They found when those around the women helped themselves to the fattening array of cocktail sausages, pasties and crisps, while avoiding vegetables, the women did the same. On the contrary when they chose healthier items, the women did also consuming around 200 fewer calories.

Dr Eric Robinson, a psychologist at the University of Birmingham, said: “We found that pairing people with unhealthy eating partners reduced the amount of healthy food they were eating. They tended to pick the foods that were high in calories”.

Therefore it is thought that recognising this effect could help people who are trying to diet and lose weight to avoid being influenced by others.

Caron Leckie, nutritionist at Diet Chef says “The research reflects the effect of social influence on our eating habits – it can be harder to stick to a diet, choose the better options and lose weight if everyone around you is doing the opposite. It can be a good idea to make sure when you start your diet that someone close to you is there also as a dieting buddy or for support on your weight loss plan ”.

Diet Chef carefully counts the calories of all meals so dieters on the plan will be averaging less than 1,200 calories per day. The daily menu allows you to get delicious diet food delivered, as well as offering a tasty and varied, healthy balanced plan encouraging dieters to lose weight at a healthy pace.

Those on the diet looking to check their own progress can do so using the weight loss calculator as well as sharing their weight loss success stories via the website or Diet Chef social media channels.

New suicide strategy and £1.5 million into prevention research

0
0
Monday 10 September, 2012
A new Suicide Prevention Strategy will focus on supporting bereaved families and preventing suicide amongst at risk groups and is backed by a call to action led by the Samaritans and up to £1.5 million for new research.

The strategy, launched today, World Suicide Prevention Day, by Care Services Minister Norman Lamb, is the first in more than 10 years and aims to reduce the suicide rate in England and better support those who have been bereaved or affected by suicide.

To do this the Government has identified six key areas for action, these are:

A better understanding of why people take their own life and how it can be prevented – supported by new suicide prevention research funding.
Working with the media, and with the internet industry through members of the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) to help parents ensure their children are not accessing harmful suicide-related websites, and to increase the availability and take-up of effective parental controls to reduce access to harmful websites.
Reducing opportunities for suicide, by making sure prisons and mental health facilities keep people safer – for example by redesigning buildings to take away ligature – and by safer prescribing of potentially lethal drugs.
Better support for high-risk groups – such as those with mental health problems and people who self-harm – by making sure the health service effectively manages the mental health aspects as well as any physical injuries when people who have self-harmed present themselves.
Improving services for groups like children and young people or ensuring the mental health needs of those with long-term conditions are being met through the Government’s mental health strategy.
Providing better information and support to those bereaved or affected by suicide – making sure families are included in the recovery and treatment of a patient and giving support to families affected by suicide.

Care Services Minister, Norman Lamb said:

“One death to suicide is one too many – we want to make suicide prevention everyone’s business. Over the last 10 years there has been real progress in reducing the suicide rate, but it is still the case that someone takes their own life every two hours in England.

“We want to reduce suicides by better supporting those most at risk and providing information for those affected by a loved one’s suicide.

“Effective suicide prevention requires combined effort from a wide range of organisations across the voluntary, statutory and private sectors. That is why I’m delighted that almost 50 national organisations have responded to the Call to Action and why we have worked with Samaritans in order to help provide support to those most in need.”

Chair of the National Suicide Prevention Strategy Advisory Group, Professor Louis Appleby said:

“Suicide does not have one cause – many factors combine to produce an individual tragedy. Prevention too must be broad – communities, families and front-line services all have a vital role.

“The new strategy will renew the drive to lower the suicide rate in England. It will highlight and support the crucial preventive work of local services, the voluntary sector, suicide researchers and many others.”

In enabling us to deliver better outcomes for people using health and care services, the Government Policy Research Programme is funding up to £1.5 million for research to help develop the evidence base and improve understanding of:

• how to reduce the risk of suicide for people with a history of self-harm;

• how self-harm can be better managed and suicide reduced in children and young people;

• how interventions can be tailored to improve the mental health in some specific groups such as black and minority ethnic groups and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people;

• how and why suicidal people use the internet; and

• how support can be provided effectively to those bereaved or affected by suicide.

Supported by a grant from the Department of Health, the Call to Action consists of national organisations from across England committed to taking action so fewer lives are lost to suicide and people bereaved or affected by suicide receive the right support. This is the first time that organisations have committed to working together to share best practice and deliver real action to tackle suicide.

Catherine Johnstone, Chair of the Call to Action Steering Group and Chief Executive of Samaritans, said:

“Each and every suicide is a tragedy which has a devastating effect on families, friends, colleagues and the wider community. As a group we are encouraged that the Government has taken this step in continuing to acknowledge the importance of suicide prevention, by publishing the new strategy and by supporting the Call to Action.

“We firmly believe that suicide can be prevented by making sure people get support when they need it, how they need it and where they need it. This means we all have to try harder to reach people who may not now be talking to anyone about the problems they face. To do this the partners signed up to the Call to Action will work together, learn from each other and join up the best of what we do.“

Speaking about the strategy, Catherine Johnstone said:

“For the strategy to be a success it requires local agencies to implement the recommendations. We are calling on all local authorities to develop their own plans and initiatives, to make sure less lives are lost to suicide.”

Earlier research has shown that stigma associated with mental health problems can be a key aspect of people not going to their GP for help. That is why the Government is committed to supporting Time to Change, the national anti-stigma campaign for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Notes to Editors

1. The call for research proposals to support the implementation of the national suicide prevention strategy is already underway and can be found on the DH website.

2. In 2010 around 4,200 people died by suicide and it continues to be a public health issue especially now at a time of economic and employment uncertainty. Did you know:

The suicide rate is highest amongst men aged 35-49 years old and overall men are three times more likely than women to take their own life;
By age 16, up to 14% of adolescents will have self-harmed once in their life; and
Lesbian, gay and bisexual people are twice as likely as heterosexual people to self harm.

Tuesday 11 September, 2012
Thousands more householders up and down the country will be eligible for help under the Government’s Warm Front scheme from 12 September, when new regulations come into force.

Revisions to the scheme rules will align the income based qualifying benefits with those to be used for the forthcoming Affordable Warmth group under the Energy Company Obligation. Householders who currently qualify under the scheme rules will still be able to get help, but these changes will mean an even greater number of households will be able to benefit from the assistance available.

Help will continue to be targeted at households living in properties that are poorly insulated or do not have a working heating system. However, the qualifying Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) threshold for the property will be increased from 55 to 63.

Energy and Climate Change Minister Greg Barker said:

“Changes to the rules on who can get help under Warm Front will mean even more people will be able to keep warm this winter. Warm Front is still very much open for business and it’s easy to apply. All you have to do is call 0800 316 2805 and, if you’re eligible, the Warm Front team will do all the paperwork for you.”

Warm Front provides government grants to people in poorly heated or insulated homes to pay for boiler repairs, new central heating systems and insulation work. Those eligible can apply for up to £3,500 towards the cost of the work or up to £6,000 for homes not connected to mains gas.

Diet Chef discusses food addiction and over-eating

0

Saturday 15 September, 2012
In the next 5 years a €6m project called NeuroFast has started to decide whether over-eating can be categorised as a potentially addictive behaviour comparable to alcohol and drugs.

It is thought that food addiction could be one of the reasons behind the growing obesity epidemic but at the moment food is not classified as an addictive substance instead such patterns of behaviour are categorised as 'impulse control disorders' rather than addictions but scientists believe that food addiction shares many similarities with other addictive actions such as gambling, drugs and alcohol.

It is estimated that 1 in 200 individuals (about 0.5% of the population) develop severe eating disorders associated with obesity and these are the most likely people to fit the criteria for ‘food addiction’.

Professor Julian Mercer of the University of Aberdeen said “How and why food could be addictive is being explored to ascertain whether this is one of the reasons why people eat too much and develop obesity”.

They hope it could help to clarify if food addiction is something that leads to conditions like obesity or binge eating. If categorised it could lead to changes in the treatment of obesity and helping people to lose weight.

Caron Leckie, nutritionist at Diet Chef, a home delivery weight loss company, says, “The evidence to come within the next 5 years will be interesting to look at, however ‘food addiction’ may only refer to a very small sub group of the population with disordered eating behaviours – this will not apply to the majority of people who over-eat and need help to lose weight.”

How can we determine which processes benefit most from IT Automation?

Tuesday 2 October, 2012
The best way in which to answer this question is to determine what the administrator is most unhappy about. What is it that generates the biggest workload, or causes the most problems?

By way of example, let us consider websites. Every company has a website nowadays, with functions ranging from online shops and web portals to login features. It is crucial that these websites are always available, and the continual monitoring and management of servers and services is therefore key. In this case, automation would exactly define the process and reproduce it as a rule incorporating all essential objects and services. Appropriate software would then not only assume the role of ensuring ongoing availability, but independently (and almost always successfully) take steps to deal with potential problems.

Another good example of everyday use of automation is daily data backup - a further source of error requiring continual manual surveillance by the IT team. When hardware errors occur - a full tape, for example - data backup simply does not happen. The software displays an error message, and the rest is up to the IT administrators. The implementation of an automated rule to check all objects (including hardware such as data tapes) would result in errors becoming immediately apparent and, in most cases, being resolved automatically.

Furthermore, automation software is often helpful in classical cases such as overnight power loss. By taking controlthrough the UPS systemand shutting down all servers in turn, the software helps to avoid much unnecessary work and expenditure. AmdoSoft Systems, the developers of innovative automation software "b4," with its smart automation platform, give many more examples of processes for which automation has important benefits on their website as well as all other IT related operations. The "b4" graphical rules engine is a simple way to create rules which does not need knowledge of any programming language and offers a selection of standard rules. AmdoSoft is also one of the only companies who can offer a quick and efficient configuration of IT automation ready to be utilized.

Increase Cashflow, Control Costs and Improve Efficiency

Controlling costs is high on today’s business agenda. Reducing mail expenditure, improving cashflow and increasing postal efficiency will make a significant contribution to the bottom line.
Using a Neopost franking machine is an easy, affordable and flexible way to pay for postage as and when you need it.

Here are some key reasons why a business should start using a franking machine.

It’s cheaper to frank than stamp

Franking is up to 38% cheaper than stamps. Franking machine users SAVE:

• At least 19p on every 2nd class letter,
• At least 16p on every 1st class letter
• At least £1.01 on every packet sent (1st class up to 750g).

With Royal Mail’s Business Mail tariff you could save a further 16% to 23.5% off the cost of franked mail depending on your mail volume.

No more queuing

With a franking machine you'll never run out of postage. It can be re-credited on-line with postage 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Right first time every time

Calculating the correct postage is easy with an on-screen rate wizard. There's no risk of under-stamping and passing surcharges onto customers or over-stamping and incurring unnecessary costs.
LAN connection allows the latest Royal Mail postal rates to be downloaded directly to a Neopost franking machine .

Improve efficiency

Faster processing of outgoing mail helps to streamline your mailroom operation and improve cash flow.

Promote yourself

Today, every little helps when it comes to promoting your brand. A franking machine allows you to add a sales message to outgoing mail, helping to boost revenue and generate brand awareness.

Professional looking business mail

Franking your mail is an easy way to portray a more professional company image. Every invoice, statement, proposal and letter you send is a key customer communication. You can include your company name and logo, and create not only consistency but also reinforce your brand with every item of post you send.

Manage your postage on-line

Neopost customers enjoy a free online account called myneopost which allows you to analyse postal spend by department or type of mail. You can also order consumables or service support.

Maximum security

Worried about unauthorised use? A franking machine can be fully locked and PIN protected, so that only authorised users have access.

Keep your mailing lists up to date for free

A franking machine can print an address on all items of post. Royal Mail will return all undeliverable franked mail, so you can update your lists for free.

Leica 3D Disto: Recreating the real world

Leica Geosystems are proud to introduce the Leica 3D Disto. This simple to use measuring tool allows anyone who is not a trained surveyor to measure, capture and project accurate measurements in 2D and 3D. In addition, Leica Geosystems are pleased to also announce the launce of a new source of information about the product, http://www.3ddisto.com

Makes light work of complex tasks
Location, height, and distance can now be measured in XYZ from one location, in one measurement. It has never been easier to create as-built records of ceiling, floor, and roof surfaces; volumes; slopes; height differences; angles; and much more. The rugged, non-slip sensor can be placed on any stable surface or mounted on a tripod using the 5/8"-11 thread.

Robust and handheld
The Leica 3D Disto is controlled by a robust, hand-held unit or by remote control. Points are aimed at and measurements triggered on the clear, high-resolution screen and the 8x zoom is perfect for longer distances. The real-time display of measurements as drawings on the screen allows on-site completeness checks. At the press of a button data is recorded in standard tables, photos, DXF, and text files. It is so easy!

A whole host of functions and features
The room scan function allows the user to measure complex structures, measure complete rooms, walls, windows, structural connections or stairs all from only one station point, whilst the projector function gives users the ability to project ceiling grids or layouts for floors or walls onto any surface - point for point

The location function allows users to secure locations and then relocate to complete all measuring tasks and carry on with room to room measuring. The user can also come back at any time to complete the measuring task.

The tool kit allows the user to carry out a variety of measurements such as plumbing up and down, setting metre marks, measuring difficult heights, setting out parallel lines, referencing levels around a room and setting out measurement and fixing points.

CAD Tools simplify the post-processing work in the office CAD, because it is now possible to anticipate drawing completion in the field. It allows the user to capture inaccessible points by measuring surrounding points, speeding up the measurement process by reducing the need of taking manual notes or attempting to relocate for capturing a point directly.

The Surface Scan mode allows the user to capture three-dimensional structures or complex surfaces by defining a simple grid of points to be subsequently scanned. The DXF export automatically creates a new surface scan layer to display the surface results appropriately. Surface definition can be carried out by measuring the border, and is now possible on strictly horizontal or vertical planes using 2 points only.

Prevent wastage
The 3D Disto is perfect for anyone working with expensive materials where a mistake can cost a lot of money, such as granite, marble, wood, glass, metal and stone. The user really benefits with this complete measuring tool and allows export of the data into CAD for post processing to CNC machinery and fitting perfectly the measured and cut material into the application. No more mistakes and no more costly errors.

Leica 3D Disto summary:
- Measure and plan position, height and distance, in all three spatial axes
- Intuitive user guidance from Assistants
- Measure from one station – every visible point can be measured by targeting with the visible laser dot – without the need to walk to the target
- Measure to difficult-to-reach points, such as roof edges
- As-built records of ceiling, floor and roof surfaces, volumes, inclination, falls, height differences, angles
- Plumbing of points, parallel offsetting of axis, levelling, transferring levels from wall to wall. Forget spirit level and measuring tapes!
- Real-time display of measurements as drawings on the screen
- Positionally accurate representation of the measured points in the camera display
- Pocket calculator
- Recording information in the form of standard tables, photos, DXF files, text files at the press of a button

Thursday 4 October, 2012
Over forty organisations will today join forces to set out a long-term vision for the deployment of offshore wind in the northern seas and the economic opportunities this presents. These include world-leading manufacturers, cutting-edge developers, supply-chain firms, researchers and industry-bodies.

The new network – called norstec – was first announced by the Prime Minister at the Clean Energy Ministerial in April and brought together around 20 companies. Today, with its ranks more than doubled and numbers continuing to grow, the network is holding its first full meeting in London centred around this vision and the role that norstec can play in maximising the potential of the northern seas’ abundant resources.

Norstec will communicate the scale of the opportunity and the benefits of clean energy in Europe’s northern seas to the public and the business and political spheres. Signatories will collaborate and share information to ensure that the benefits offered by vast clean energy potential in the Northern Seas are fully realised.

Prime Minister, David Cameron, said:

"I continue to be strongly supportive of the UK offshore renewables sector and am delighted to see Norstec rising from the waves. As I said when I launched this network last April we are on the cusp of a second, clean energy revolution in the North Sea. Close collaboration between industry and government will be critical to making this happen.”

Edward Davey, Energy and Climate Change Secretary, said:

“The offshore wind industry represents a massive growth opportunity for the UK and our neighbours around the northern seas, bringing jobs and re-energising once thriving industrial heartlands on the East Coast and beyond.

“I am determined that we work closely with North Seas governments, businesses and academics to make the most of our plentiful offshore renewable resources.

“Norstec will help the offshore wind industry in the northern seas to grow and create a new industrial revolution, driving economic growth across this part of Europe. I’m delighted to see the potential for offshore wind deployment in the northern seas set out so clearly and vividly.”

Charity Challenge launches portfolio of exclusive trips for the over 50s

Sunday 7 October, 2012
As veteran explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, 68, prepares to embark on a record-breaking trip to Antarctica, Britain’s leading fundraising expedition company announces a portfolio of exclusive challenges for the over-50s market.

There are now more over-65s in Britain than there are children aged under 16. But while the population may be getting older, gone are the days when hitting 50 meant that you were past it. Recent headlines revealed that according to popular opinion middle age only starts at 55 and that age is just a state of mind.

So thinks Jeremy Gane, 64, who organised and led the incredibly successful 2009 BT Comic Relief climb of Kilimanjaro for Gary Barlow, Cheryl Cole and friends.

As a director of fundraising expedition company Charity Challenge and bespoke travel agency Gane & Marshall, Jeremy is championing the cause of the older traveller. He and fellow Charity Challenge director Simon Albert have launched a range of challenges around the globe that will invite their more mature adventurer to really stretch themselves and broaden their horizons.

The series of adventures has been cheekily dubbed Over The Hill, though participants will obviously not see themselves as such! To sign up you only need to be aged 50 or older and you should be in reasonably good health and prepared to do some training. Otherwise, all that is required is an adventurous frame of mind, a good sense of humour and of course a passport.

Participants can sign up to one of nine different challenges, all the while raising money for a cause close to their hearts. These are:

• Great Wall Discovery, China
• African Bush Trek with the Maasai, Tanzania
• Kilimanjaro Summit Climb, Tanzania
• Trek to Machu Picchu, Peru
• Saigon to Angkor Wat Bike Ride, Vietnam and Cambodia
• Everest Base Camp, Nepal
• Cuban Revolution Cycle, Cuba
• Trek to The Home of the Dalai Lama, India
• Rajasthan Tiger Cycle Challenge, India

Jeremy first climbed Kilimanjaro aged 42. Upon his return, he founded his first travel company, Gane & Marshall. He has since climbed Kilimanjaro a further 20 times, trekked to the North Pole and continues to lead truly adventurous expeditions.

He says: “Although the word adventure is so often applied to and for young people, I believe it is very relevant for the oldies. To me adventure really means setting out to a new place or experience. It is a most important part of getting old.

“Each day can be an adventure and indeed when our clients prepare for a climb or bike ride, they get out most days to train and finally they leave their comfort zones – the sofa, the TV, the take-aways and the centrally-heated home. They brave the elements and discover how much more they are capable of than they could possibly have imagined.

“And they see so much more of the world than they could have ever have dreamed. Adventure, when well managed by a good tour operator, can be very fulfilling and regenerative.”

Jeremy, who lost a kidney to cancer in his early 50s, adds: “I have had a lot of pleasure from adventure travel as I’ve dealt with serious illness and as I’ve got older, apart from my hippy experiences in my youth, my big adventure experiences started in my mid-40s. I’ve been travelling ever since and I aim to keep on doing so!

“These adventures are great for people who have hit the age when their children might be leaving home or they feel that they might be reaching that point where they are over the hill. There are so many challenging adventures out there waiting for them.

“For those who want a varied geography there are fabulous mountain treks and climbs that will take the climbers far above the hectic, noisy everyday life and into the realm of the eagles and lammergeyers, and for the adventure walkers there is remote bush country, desert and jungle.

“If you don’t want to ski or walk – then get on your bike and cycle to Angkor Wat or across Cuba. It’s all possible and being over fifty is no excuse to stay in your armchair, it is a reason to get up and go places.”

You can join a challenge as an individual, a couple or even as part of a group. Challenges will not be any easier than other itineraries to the same destination, but will be run by Jeremy or one of his experienced colleagues and will go at a steady pace, to suit the group.

Participants should be prepared to train for several weeks or even months prior to the trip, in order to achieve a good level of fitness. They will also be encouraged to fundraise for their chosen charity, ahead of the departure date.

Jeremy adds: “I’m 64 and climbed Mt Stanley in Uganda in February, walked 100kms with the Maasai in July and am now using the training for the Bristol half marathon to get me up to fitness level for a Himalayan trek and climb in the new year.

“For people who haven’t travelled much, it will open up big, broad and wonderful horizons. They will feel physically fitter and much better about themselves and will hopefully come to realise that the second part of your life can be the best part of your life.”

This is certainly true for Don Cowper, 59, who has been on nineteen challenges since he first signed up with Charity Challenge in 2000. Don has developed an amazing level of fitness and mental fortitude that leaves younger challenge participants gasping with admiration.

“I have had the most amazing charity challenge experiences in the past 12 years,” says Don.

“My favourite moments are too many to list but it was a very special time when I walked up hand in hand with two friends to the top of Kala Pattar - the physical highpoint of the Everest Base Camp trek - each of them said at least 50 times, ‘that's enough I can't go any further’. Together we made it.

“In October I will be attempting to climb Mount Lobouche in the Nepalese Himalayas. What's next? Well after Mount Lobouche, I would like to go back to South America to climb Mount Chimbarazo and Mount Aconcagua - climbing Mount Everest is my Dream of Dreams and even if I don't get to do it, I can always say that I have been there with some lifelong friends.”

Carol Graves, 67, says: “During the past 12 years or so I have taken part in treks and cycle rides every year, all over the world, (and not forgetting a skydive too).

“I am now age nearly 68 and haven’t stopped yet. Am I middle-aged? Not sure, but life definitely begins after 50!”
