Thursday 2 February, 2017

We Buy Motors, the London based used car dealer today announced instantaneous car valuation services for customers intending to sell used cars.

Car owners desirous of disposing their vehicles generally spend a lot of time before getting their vehicles sold, often at prices below market value.

We Buy Motors introduced the hassle free car valuation service for sellers. On keying in the registration number online, the offered value gets displayed. On acceptance, the car is picked up from the seller’s location, while the payment is released simultaneously, all within a period of 48 hours flat. All documentation and DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) formalities are handled by the firm. This aims to free owners from multiple hassles, such as documentation, waiting period, actual handing over and price negotiation.

Based on advanced algorithms and market data, the software relies on the make, model, year of registration, history of vehicle and mileage to make the valuation. The company claims that their offers are unmatched by the industry, offering the best prices and convenient services for sellers. The dynamic pricing adopted reflects the actual and on-date market indices in all offers. This pricing methodology leaves no room for manipulation, presenting an accurate evaluation of the resale value.

In the wake of security concerns about documentation of transferred vehicles, it makes it all the more important for V5C or V62 formalities to be completed. The team assists in completion of all documentation, which keeps the seller within the law, always. The service which has been used by close to fifty thousand users, has been phenomenally successful, across vehicle segments. The team at We Buy Motors has been geared up to meet increased demand as more and more users look for a trusted service that offers hassle free service at the best price.

About The Company:

New tips support people with arthritis to manage at work

Thursday 2 February, 2017

Arthritis Care has launched a new information booklet to help people with arthritis to manage their careers, including practical tips for coping in the workplace.

The free booklet, Working with Arthritis, covers everything from maintaining good posture, employers’ legal obligations, equipment adjustments and flexible working. It also gives practical tips for getting back into work, education and training, and discusses options if working is no longer possible

Arthritis affects one in five adults in the UK, with musculoskeletal conditions being the most prevalent conditions in the UK’s working age population. It’s widely recognised that being in employment can have a positive impact on a person’s health and well-being, but many people don’t have access to the support they need.

Rina Lakha Pattani who was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis 8 years ago, has been able to stay in her full time job, thanks to a flexible and supportive employer. She now works from home which allows her to work around the pain and fatigue caused by her arthritis.

Rina, said: “My advice to anyone in a similar position would be to speak to your employer openly and honestly. They have a legal obligation to make reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act and most employers would be keen to keep you on, especially if you’ve worked there for some time. It’s much easier to work flexible hours these days, especially with technology to connect you anytime anywhere; I now work from home full time, if I wasn’t able to I don’t know how I’d be able to cope.”

Rina’s line manager Dickie Bielenberg, Managing Director Value +, Conduent, said: “There are so many simple ways employers can support people with arthritis in the workplace. Rina and I discussed her requirements and decided that she would be able to work effectively from home. It’s worked really well, the changes have been simple to make and I’ve been able to retain a valuable member of staff.”

More details on working well with arthritis can be found in Arthritis Care’s Working with Arthritis booklet. To order your free copy call 0800 800 4050 or visit arthritiscare.org.uk/work

The Sick Children’s Trust Thanks Local Schoolgirl For Giving A ‘Helping Hand’

0

Monday 6 February, 2017

An inspirational schoolgirl is being thanked by charity The Sick Children’s Trust for her overwhelming support making a difference to families with sick children in hospital.

Hannah Warburton, seven, from Whitley Bay, is a little girl on a mission. For the last two years she had dedicated her time outside of the classroom to helping others. The Sick Children’s Trust is just one charity Hannah has chosen to help by fundraising and donating gifts to families with seriously ill children at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital.

‘Hannah’s Helping Hand’ was inspired by her older brother, Adam, who has spent lots of time in hospital over the years because of cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Initially, Hannah raised money for charities supporting children with disabilities, but has since chosen other charities who she feels need help. Hannah says:

“I love my brother Adam so much and wanted to help in some way, and I thought raising money for poorly children was something I could do. I just want to help people. Everyone will need a helping hand and I want to be there for as many people as I can.”

Mum Katy, who supports Hannah with her fundraising activities, says:

“Hannah loves doing her bit for others; it just seems to be who she is. She enjoys choosing charities, and dreaming up new ways to help. She would do twice as much as she already does but has to fit in school sometimes! She doesn't show any signs of slowing down and her total raised is now over £2,000.

“Not only does Hannah’s fundraising help many others, it also helps Hannah a lot. As she gets older we tell her more about her brother’s disabilities and she takes it all in her stride. Her brother has been a huge motivation for her to fundraise – she would do anything for Adam.

“The reason Hannah chose The Sick Children’s Trust was because her baby cousin spent several weeks in hospital and we talked about what we, as a family, have needed during the times Adam has been in hospital for long stays. So Hannah decided she would fundraise for the ‘Homes from Home’ in Newcastle and help families with seriously ill children stay together.”

The Sick Children’s Trust runs ten ‘Homes from Home’ across the country, supporting families with sick children in hospital. It costs the charity £30 to support a family for one night in ‘Home from Home’ accommodation, and the charity is completely reliant on voluntary donations. The charity runs Scott House at Freeman Hospital and Crawford House at the RVI in Newcastle. The Sick Children’s Trust Scott House Manager, Andrew Leadbitter, says:

“When we heard about Hannah and all she had been doing, we were absolutely thrilled she chose to fundraise for us! She brightened up so many families’ days when she visited Scott House and went to Crawford House with arms full of gifts which she had been busily collecting over the last couple of months. It was a lovely moment to see such thoughtfulness and generosity.

“Hannah is a true inspiration and has made a difference to so many families who have seriously ill children in hospital, and we can’t thank her enough for that. We wish Hannah all the best with her future in fundraising – we know she’ll make a difference to thousand more people.”

The Future of Valentine’s Day

0

Monday 6 February, 2017

Picture the scene: Valentine’s Day 2035. A beaming girlfriend, wearing sensually responsive lingerie, is presented with a piece of emotional jewellery, whilst sipping a multimedia cocktail looking out on a Tahitian sunset via augmented reality. Fast forward 20 years and they may be sharing the restaurant with people dating androids or even androids dating androids – but will they be able to tell who is who?

Whilst the idea of Valentine’s Day is embedded in our society, the perception of Valentine’s Day and all it entails has changed greatly over time. From a sweet sonnet written to a lover, through to the embellished cards and gifts of today, Valentine’s Day is an ever-changing entity. With this in mind, lingerie company Sparkling Strawberry has commissioned a leading Futurologist, Dr Ian Pearson of Futurizon, to predict how Valentine’s Day will be celebrated in the decades to come. His detailed report is published today.

According to the report, these images are not scenes out of the next sci-fi blockbuster, but entirely possible in the near future. Increasingly rapid technology development could soon transform not only how we mark the year’s most romantic day, but also impact on how we conduct our romantic relationships into the future.

If you are interested in learning more about the Future of Valentine’s Day, read the full Futurizon report, or read on.

What could Valentine’s Day look like in the future?

Cards and Gifting:Intelligent Underwear: A romantic gift of lingerie could take on a whole new meaning with colour changing or light emitting clothing becoming commonplace. Built in life-sign monitoring would enable lingerie to change colour to reflect the wearer’s romantic mood and even record and playback sensations.Emotional Jewellery: Even tiny items such as accessories or jewellery could be large enough to hold considerable electronic capability. Something as small as a sequin, could act as a sensor or feedback device.Touch Sensitive Video Cards: Within the not too distant future, Valentine’s Cards will be fully networked into something about the size of playing card, with touch sensitive displays enabling the sender to create a fully personalised video card, directly linked to social media.Valentine’s Dinner:Virtual Reality: VR could make a Valentine’s date extra-special, with musicians serenading the diners over a meal, or perhaps immersing them into one of a range of romantic settings, chosen specifically by them.Multimedia Cocktails: With augmented reality, even the little things can become a spectacle. A drink could include multimedia sparkles, or could emit flowing hearts or fireworks.Shrinking the World: Sitting together or across continents, Virtual Reality will enable two people to experience a shared fantasy, perhaps for an evening meal, or even to give romantic gifts, which might appear at first virtually, arriving later in reality.Relationships:Virtual Gender Change: Virtual Reality will offer easy cyber-trans opportunities, allowing people to present themselves safely and anonymously as another gender.Valentine’s with Robots: Whist the technology is too expensive and immature at present, it is entirely possible people will buy androids for companionship. With advanced AI, people could form strong emotional bonds with robots, perhaps even dating them.Fully Networked Beings: By the 2050s, the human mind could be fully networked, enabling a wide range of possibilities, from going on a date with yourself, to transgender play, or even swapping bodies, all by linking into a cloud extension of the mind and the body’s sensory systems.

Today, Valentine’s Day offers a plethora of opportunities to declare and show adoration or love. Tomorrow’s Valentine’s Day greatly increases that potential, using the full scope of the real and virtual worlds, with the two seamlessly interwoven via augmented reality. Technologies will enhance gift giving, and the user experience. The simplest piece of lingerie could become a sensory world of romance, displaying moods, enhancing sensuality or even allowing people to replay a sensual experience.

One thing seems certain, Valentine’s Day will continue as we head towards the 22nd Century. The question that remains is, just how far will we go?

Hoist Gives Family New Lease of Life

0

Monday 6 February, 2017

For most people, a simple walk, car journey, or public transport access can get you from A to B without any worry or thought at all. However, for some people, especially those who are wheelchair users, the thought of travelling is too stressful to comprehend.

Since Caitlin was born, she has had numerous hospital admissions, surgeries and health conditions which put her life at risk. Now aged 16, Caitlin has finally been diagnosed with a Mitochondrial Disorder, affecting her kidneys, stomach and feeding. Caitlin is unable to walk or talk and relies solely on her family for all her care needs as well as mobility around the house. Transferring Caitlin can be extremely difficult and hoists are needed to enable the safety of both Caitlin and her parents when manoeuvring her.

“Caitlin is wheelchair dependent and we have hoists all around our house to help us move her, but we faced so many problems taking her outside. I’m 5ft 4 and with Caitlin being a teenager, it is almost impossible for me to move her safely from where she needs to be. I’ve also suffered from back pain and had a pelvic organ prolapse due to all the lifting over the years and so we run into so many issues with transport. It really affects where we can go” said Michelle, Caitlin’s Mum.

After continually struggling with daily transfers and confined to their house, a portable hoist was recommended by Caitlin’s Occupational Therapist, which could be used outside. However this essential piece of equipment is extremely costly and unavailable through the local authority and it was impossible for Caitlin’s family to obtain.

With all other avenues exhausted, Michelle contacted React, a children’s charity which provides vital equipment to children living with life-shortening illnesses.

“The hoist has been a life-saver for us. We don’t have to worry when we leave the house now and we can access everything so easily. This Christmas, we were able to visit my oldest daughter for the first time and Caitlin was able to come too. We are even planning to go on holiday, something we would have never imagined we could be able to do.”

Notes to editor:

There can be no greater tragedy than to be told your child lives with an illness which will shorten his or her life. React (Rapid Effective Assistance for Children with potentially Terminal Illness) exists to improve the quality of life for children with life-limiting illnesses who are living in families experiencing financial hardship.

React works to give these children comfort, dignity and where possible, greater independence. React provides a wide range of equipment from specialist wheelchairs, beds, baths, and mobility aids, to essential everyday items like washing machines and tumble dryers. React can also offer mobile home holidays in the UK and sometimes, sadly funeral and memorial expenses.

£500K financial skills project for blind and deaf teens

Monday 6 February, 2017

Money Mechanics

A project boosting the financial literacy of young deaf and blind people, has secured £532,000 in funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

Over a thousand 16-25 year olds living with sight or hearing loss will learn how to budget, bank and borrow safely, in their first language.

Specialist programmes will be designed and delivered by the financial education charity MyBnk, The Royal Association for Deaf People and Royal Society for Blind Children.

90% of those diagnosed with sight loss in youth did not work for more than six months of their lives, while an estimated 70% were living on the poverty line.

People with disabilities also often face a ‘double disadvantage’ with many financial services untailored to their needs.

The ‘Money Mechanics’ project will help young people overcome barriers and become financially confident to take control of their lives, sustain work, move into independent living and live life ‘without limits’.

Once
created, the training will be scaled to other charities. Since 2005 players of the People’s Postcode Lottery have raised an
incredible £168.4m for charities and good causes across Great Britain and
internationally.

Guy Rigden, CEO of MyBnk, said: “This project will have a lifetime impact on the everyday interactions of vulnerable young people, be it budgeting, understanding bills, prioritising debts or earning money, as well as on their aspirations for the future, for example considering university, starting their own business, or moving into their own home.”

RSBC chief executive, Dr Tom Pey said: “Our shared experience has proved time and again that deaf and blind young people are not being supported at school to grasp the fundamentals of handling money. This gap in their knowledge creates barriers to their economic and social independence. Money Mechanics will make sure young people with sensory impairment have the knowledge and skills they needed to deal with their finances effectively and independently.”

Record January sales of 7,661Sportage returns to Top Ten sellersKia rank eighth overall

Continuing high customer demand and a new year SUV special sales event helped Kia set a new all-time January sales record of 7,661 – taking the brand to eighth in the UK new car sales charts.

With 3,063 Sportage models delivered to customers during the month Kia enjoyed its best-ever start to a new year and the must-have SUV re-entered the SMMT’s Top Ten best-seller charts. Kia captured a 4.39 per cent share of the January market.

The January performance was 51 per cent up on January in 2016 – itself one of Kia’s best-ever January numbers. In January 2016 Kia delivered 5,066 new cars to customers for a 2.99 per cent market share.

Paul Philpott, Kia Motors (UK) Limited President and Chief Executive said: “This is a stunning performance by our dealers and reflects the continuing confidence and desire amongst our amazing growing family of customers.

“Our special SUV event saw demand for all our multi-purpose models such as Sportage, Sorento, Niro and Soul increase and this has given us a very positive start to 2017. We still expect some challenges this year – not least when the VED regulations change in April, but this level of demand shows our customers recognise the style, quality and affordability that Kia represents,” he added.

Figures show that 10,000 men die from prostate cancer in the UK each yearProstate Cancer UK awareness campaign aims to reduce deathsFirst Bus donates around £150,000 worth of advertising space on buses to Prostate Cancer UK

Eye catching posters on the sides and interiors of many First buses across the UK will help raise awareness of prostate cancer over the coming months.

First Bus has donated around £150,000 of advertising space on its buses to help raise awareness of Prostate Cancer UK's pledge to solve diagnosis problems which are blamed for many of the UK's prostate cancer deaths.

Figures from Prostate Cancer UK shows that one in eight men across the UK are diagnosed with the disease at some stage in their lives and more than 10,000 men die from prostate cancer in the UK each year, one man every hour.

Prostate Cancer UK was chosen as FirstGroup's Charity of Choice partner following a vote of 25,000 employees from its bus, rail and tram operations across the UK. The three-year partnership, which began in April 2015, aims to raise £1m in cash and in kind to support Prostate Cancer UK's work to help more men survive prostate cancer and enjoy a better quality of life.

Employees at First Bus across the UK have helped raise funds and awareness through events including quizzes, cycle rides, sponsored runs, collections and cake sales.

Managing Director of First Bus, Giles Fearnley, said: 'We are proud to support Prostate Cancer UK and delighted that many of our vehicles feature the powerful new posters. A key aim of our partnership with Prostate Cancer UK is to ensure First Bus employees, customers and the wider community know their risk of prostate cancer, raising awareness of the disease and the support available from the charity. I'm proud of the enthusiasm and passion that so many of my colleagues have shown for fundraising and supporting Prostate Cancer UK - it is truly inspiring.'

Angela Culhane, Chief Executive at Prostate Cancer UK said: 'It is fantastic to see our adverts displayed on buses across the UK and we are very grateful to First Bus for donating this space.'

She added: 'Our aim is to stop prostate cancer being a killer and this partnership is helping us to achieve this. The money and awareness raised by First Bus is allowing us to focus on radical improvements in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, as well as supporting those affected by the disease. We thank everyone at First Bus for their ongoing support and commitment in helping us beat prostate cancer.'

Viiking Ventures secures Booker and Makro distribution for Indian craft beer

Monday 6 February, 2017

Marketing support for restaurants and 'Brand Ambassadors'

Within days of appointing Ben Parmar, the former Cobra Channel Controller, as MD of Goa Premium Beer importer Viiking Ventures UK, the company has announced that wholesalers Booker and Makro are to stock its craft beer.

The gluten-free pilsner is being trialled in 650ml bottles and 500ml cans for three months - at Booker outlets in Acton, Brighton, Croydon, Dagenham, Nine Elms, St Pancras, Sidcup, Southend, Medway and Wimbledon plus as well as Makro depots in Charlton, Enfield and Rayleigh – ahead of a decision whether to roll out the product nationwide.

Parmar has immediately beefed up the sales operation. His first appointment is Hoshang Noria, former National Sales Manager at Kato Enterprises, of who also spent 12 years as a Regional Sales Manager for Cobra.

Parmar has also added a van sales team to call on independent high street retailers, which has had a dramatic impact on sales. The company is currently recruiting additional sales people nationwide.

Outlining his sales strategy, Parmar said, “We know from feedback from the test restaurants, that there is an enormous demand for a premium imported beer, especially one that's gluten free.

“Today's more discerning diners want authenticity – and that applies to the drink as well as food. Drinkers expressed a preference for a genuine imported beer, rather than one brewed in the UK under licence.”

With a craft beer offering, Parmar believes that the successful route to market is not to launch with a massive consumer advertising push. Instead, Viiking will focus its resources on supporting its resellers.

It has been widely reported that – despite growth in the eating out sector – the curry industry is struggling in the face of rising prices, chef shortages, increased competition and changing customer demands.

Viiking has set aside marketing funds to support restaurant promotions such as charity nights, authentic gourmet dining events and the introduction of gluten-free menus.

The company is also looking to support the sector's hard working front of house teams, with a unique 'Brand Ambassador' scheme which will incentivise front line employees at the point of sale, to generate awareness amongst their best customers.

Parmar hopes to be able to show how restaurateurs, with Goa's backing, they can achieve the all-important 15 percent rise in sales which will double their net profit.”

Rugby Honours Father's Efforts

Tuesday 7 February, 2017

Dave Hulme from Sale says he still can’t believe the most powerful man in rugby union has invited him to lunch at Twickenham Stadium next month…

RFU President Peter Baines heard about Dave’s volunteering work and wanted to meet a man who has turned a tragic personal loss into a powerful force for good.

Losing a child is what every parent fears most and it happened to Dave and his wife Nicola five and a half years ago when their eldest son, Alex, died of a rare form of cancer. He was 12.

The couple and their youngest son Matt formed the Alex Hulme Foundation as a lasting legacy to recognise the courage and bravery their boy had shown during his illness, but also because he would have wanted to help others too. And to date it has raised £316,000 to develop research into Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma* in children.

Dave (55) and a senior manager at Tameside Hospital says he and Nicola were naturally concerned about Matt who was just eight and missing his big brother.

“We needed an interest for him and, as he was showing early signs of a talent for rugby, we signed him for our local club Sale FC. Being new and unknown to most people at the Club we purposely kept our personal situation to ourselves. This allowed us to deal with our grief in new surroundings and in private. This also allowed Matt to forge his own identity rather than just being known as Alex Hulme’s brother. He grew in confidence, learned the values of the sport and made new friends just as we did,” explains Dave.

In 2014 Sale Rugby Club adopted Alex’s Foundation as its chosen charity and the sport and the Club have become a massive part of the family’s lives.

Last year Dave won a special award for his tireless efforts in both team management and recruitment within the community, and for his unwilting support of Sale FC.

He was nominated to meet the RFU President by Michael Barnes and Cheshire RFU, who say: “Dave is usually the chap on the side line of our Under14 matches with the flag in his hand, spare whistle, team sheet and tackle count in his pocket. If you're looking for the epitome of a role model, Dave is definitely your man."

Karen James, Chief Executive at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Tameside Hospital, adds: “ As a mum myself I can’t begin to imagine what Dave and his family have been through. Yet, despite it all he works tirelessly to improve the lives of our patients while fundraising to support research through his Foundation in memory of his son.”

Dave is invited to take one guest with him to the exclusive lunch and he says Nicola is happy to step down in favour of 13-year old Matt. “ The sport has played a massive part in his development as a young man as well as a rugby player. And he’s as proud as we are to see Alex’s name emblazoned on the back of the blue and white shirt he pulls on for the team. It’s going to be such an honour for us both,” he adds.

Closing the gap in maths through an app - in only 30 minutes a day

Tuesday 7 February, 2017

A new study reveals significant maths improvements for children learning with the right apps, regardless of their socio-economic background.

A lot of children in the UK are struggling in maths in their early years of school. This is especially true for learners with English as an additional language, and those who come from low-income families. Yet, a solid foundation is critical for children to succeed later on.

An in-depth study by the University of Nottingham has found that 30-minute sessions with the right software result in significant learning gains for all children, regardless of their background. Improvements were immediate and sustained over time.

The results show that the most significant learning gains were achieved by children with poor memory skills. The researchers associate the remarkable progress with the design of the software used in the intervention.

The maths apps used in the intervention were developed by non-profit onebillion. The onebillion apps are designed to allow every child to progress at their own speed. Every child receives immediate and personalised feedback, as well as repetitions and instructions as needed, which is particularly beneficial for children with learning difficulties.

The study found that with the right child-centred software, tablet interventions can be effective in supporting early maths development, and can foster inclusive learning.

About the study

The study “Closing the gap: Efficacy of a tablet intervention to support the development of early mathematical skills in UK primary school children” was carried out by Nicola Pitchford, Laura Outhwaite and Anthea Gulliford, School of Psychology, University of Nottingham, UK.

The full study report can be accessed on http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0360131517300118

About onebillion maths apps

onebillion maths apps are available on iOS and Android, in more than 50 languages. The apps are suitable for learning at home, and as classroom support in schools.

New research from CarGurus reveals 80 per cent of drivers impose strict hygiene rules on their passengers

Wednesday 8 February, 2017
Almost a third of Brits (30 per cent) don’t let people eat or drink in their carJust under a quarter of car owners (23 per cent) don’t allow any pets in their car and 63 per cent of drivers won’t tolerate smokingA further 38 per cent of car owners admit they would think less of someone if their car smelt badDespite this, the average car in Britain only gets cleaned, both inside and out, every 7 months

Be it a faithful family car or first set of wheels, it’s clear Brits are very precious when it comes to their motors. That’s according to new research from the automotive shopping website, CarGurus, which found a whopping 80 per cent of Brits admit to imposing strict rules on their passengers in a bid to keep that ‘new car’ feeling*.

Follow the Rules

The research found that the top regimes imposed by clean-crazy Brits include no eating or drinking in the car (30 per cent), no pets (23 per cent) and a further six per cent don’t allow young kids in their car in case they make a mess. Furthermore, and perhaps unsurprisingly, 63 per cent of Brits won’t tolerate smoking in their car in an attempt to keep their cars feeling, and smelling fresh.

Regionally, drivers in Wales appear to be the hottest on car cleanliness, with just under a half banning food and drink in their vehicle (43 per cent), and over a quarter (27 per cent) not allowing pets in their car. Brits living in London are most relaxed on the food and drink rule (24 per cent) and Scots are the most likely to let their pet pals ride shotgun (17 per cent).

However, despite the obsessive rule keeping, and need to retain the ‘new car’ feeling, it appears that Brits only clean their cars, inside and out, on average every 7 months. The research also revealed that UK drivers only consider their car to feel ‘new’ for just after a year after they purchased it – either used or new (13.1 months).

Keeping up Appearances

When asked what motivates Brits to keep their car in good nick, over half of drivers (52 per cent) said so the car lasts longer. But 18 per cent admit they judge someone by the state of their car and a further 16 per cent say they keep their car in a good state to make a good impression on others. Over a fifth (22 per cent) admit to thinking less of someone if they have a messy car, with a further 18 per cent assuming that if someone has a messy car, they must be a messy person.

Sarah Welch, spokesperson for CarGurus commented: “Our research has shown that Brits really do care about their cars, and for many, a car is seen as a reflection of its owner. Whether the rules the driver impose are considered extreme or not, it’s clear people want to keep their motors in a good state to help keep that ‘new car’ feeling. A car is a huge investment, be it new or used and so it’s important to keep it in the best possible condition to help retain its value for a future sale.”
