Tuesday 23 May, 2017

Exponential marketing firm Precision Acquisitions Direct works in close cooperation with leading healthy eating brands and believes that pop up marketing is the only way to market a food business in the modern age.

Through their ability to deliver top-quality results Precision Acquisitions Direct is setting the bar for engaging, interactive marketing solutions. The London-based firm’s power lies in the combined experience of its workforce and their refusal to take a back seat in what is fast becoming a highly competitive industry. The firm takes on every stage of their clients' marketing process, from design and testing to implementation and campaign management. Focusing on face to face engagement through pop-up events the firm delivers unique customer experiences that are helping brands go further.

About Precision Acquisitions Direct: http://www.precisionacquisitionsdirect.com/about-us/

Most recently, the company has been working closely with a brand that provides fresh meal kits through a subscription service – organising and running pop-up events across the capital to help spread the brand’s healthy eating message. The firm has already showcased their client’s services at The Ideal Home Show is Olympia, where they offered visitors live cooking demonstrations and the opportunity to learn more about the brand’s values. The firm has already planned the next wave of pop-ups for their client, including the BBC Good Food Show in May, Grand Designs Live and This Morning Live in partnership with ITV - a brand new live event set to bring the popular magazine show to life.

Precision Acquisitions Direct acknowledges that in the current climate, food is one of the most competitive sectors, with people becoming far more conscious about the quality of what they eat. To stand out, brands need to take a proactive approach and market their products and services in a way that generates maximum engagement. Precision Acquisition Direct believes that pop up marketing is the number one tool for food brands to raise engagement. ‘Food and drink are sensory, while a picture of a great plate of food can be appealing, people are more likely to engage with a food brand if they can taste, smell and see the products and ingredients in person’ States Managing Director of Precision Acquisitions Direct Alex Mandich. However, it’s not just the sensory element of pop-up experiences that can drive consumer interest. ‘These days, people are more conscious of what they eat, where their food comes from and how they can fit healthy eating into their increasingly busy lifestyles. Meeting with knowledgeable brand advocates and having a platform to can access personalised support is vital to securing long terms customer loyalty and promoting brand values and ethics.’ outlines the managing director.

Precision Acquisitions Direct is adamant that success in the food industry is dependent on attracting meaningful brand followers rather than just boosting customer numbers, and that their pop-up marketing services are helping to facilitate this through meaningful engagement and personalised customer experiences.

Tuesday 23 May, 2017

Craft Union Pub Company, part of Ei Managed Operations, the Group's directly managed house business, has begun its nationwide expansion with the addition of several sites across the country, taking its current estate to 122 pubs.

Craft Union's philosophy is about developing quality pubs in the heart of local communities. The offer is straightforward; drinks-led with quality beers at affordable prices, alongside a comprehensive sports and entertainment offer in well-invested community pubs.

Craft Union has its roots in the north of England, debuting its first pub in May 2015, but has recently opened pubs in East Anglia, the South East and South West. Among the new additions to the fast-growing estate are: The Boundary, Norwich, The George, Ashford, The Crown, Ramsgate and The Clocktower, Torquay.

To continue further expansion, a pipeline of sites is being built in these regions, as well as along the south coast, and the M4 corridor toward south Wales.

Allied to this estate growth, Craft Union is trialling a new food offer focusing on simple, quality dishes such as burgers and pizzas to complement the TV sports-viewing occasion. If successful, this more extensive consumer offer will allow for additional sites to be considered for the estate.

Frazer Grimbleby, Operations Director, Craft Union Pub Company, said: 'It's always been our intention to develop into a leading scale operator of community pubs and our recent expansion southwards marks an important milestone in that journey.

'We aim to put great quality pubs back at the heart of the local community as we strongly believe pubs play a vital role in the lives of their customers and we are committed to nurturing this. The community is at the heart of every decision we make and our tailored offer reflects this. In a Craft Union pub, customers can expect to see their favourite quality brands on the bar at competitive prices alongside a wide range of sports and entertainment.

'Absolutely key to the proposition is the close relationship and extensive support we provide our operators as they practice their craft of running outstanding pubs. With the right investment in areas such as sports viewing, entertainment, quality interiors and affordable drinks delivering value to the consumer, we're confident our pubs will continue to thrive.'

Nepalese Government publicly burns huge illegal wildlife stockpile

Destroying over 4,000 seized items from 48 species sends powerful message to traffickers

As part of international events to mark World Biodiversity Day 2017, the Government of Nepal yesterday (Monday 22 May) hosted a public burning of its stockpile of confiscated wildlife products, sending a powerful message to those fuelling the illegal trade which is threatening the Himalayan kingdom’s most iconic wildlife.

Putting more than 4,000 seized items from 48 species beyond economic use, including rhino horn and tiger parts, the Nepalese government demonstrated its stance against the black-market industry, much of it driven by foreign demand for traditional medicine.

Coordinated by international conservation charity ZSL (Zoological Society of London), alongside a number of non-governmental organisation partners, the burn was hosted by Nepal’s Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation, Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, and Department of Forest, and took place in front of an audience of nearly 300 people in Chitwan National Park.

The inventory of illegally-trafficked wildlife products destroyed in the burn included 67 tiger skins, 357 rhino horns and two sacks of pangolin scales, as well as hides from species including red panda (Ailurus fulgens), clouded leopard (Neofilis nebulosa) and snow leopard (Panthera uncia). Other items included 418 skins from the common leopard (Panthera pardus), 354 elephant tails and 15 bear gallbladders.

With support from the British Embassy in Kathmandu, ZSL worked with local government partners to ensure all items were securely transported and catalogued prior to destruction, in line with international protocols from CITES (Convention on Illegal Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna).

ZSL's Nepal Country Manager Dr Hem Sagar-Baral, commented: “Illegal trade is devastating populations of iconic wildlife in many countries worldwide and sadly Nepal is no exception. ZSL is proud to be working with Nepal’s government and other NGO partners to tackle this issue and applaud this bold demonstration of the country’s commitment to the cause.”

ZSL is working in Nepal to protect threatened species such as the greater one-horned rhino (Rhinoceros unicornis) and Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) – which are on the verge of extinction due to the impacts of a growing human population and poaching – as well as the country’s two indigenous species of pangolin, the world’s most heavily-trafficked wild mammal.

H.R. London, 23 May, 2017:

Leading luxury dealer group H.R. Owen has welcomed a spectacular and podium-ready Huracán LP 620-2 Super Trofeo racer to its world-famous Lamborghini London dealership.

The South Kensington showroom – the number one Lamborghini dealer in the world in 2016 – recently put the race version of the Huracán coupé on display ready for a licensed racer to snap up.

The car was made exclusively for the 2016 Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Series season, but was never able to fulfil its explosive track potential.

Owner commitments meant the Huracán only completed half a year’s worth of Super Trofeo races, making it an exciting prospect with just shy of 4,000km on the clock.

On the track, it offers unrivalled performance thanks to being lighter, more rigid and more powerful than the standard car. Power is provided by a 620hp version of Lamborghini’s V10, while the power-to-weight ratio is an impressive 2.05 kilograms per horsepower thanks to its new and improved 1,270kg dry weight.

Developed by Lamborghini in collaboration with race car constructors Dallara, the rear-wheel-drive monster is an attractive buy for drivers looking to progress to GT3 racing.

The Huracán LP 620-2 Super Trofeo has cut a stunning figure in the Lamborghini London showroom since its arrival, with its racing livery, enormous rear wing and striking grey paintwork stopping the South Kensington public in their tracks.

H.R. Owen’s Huracán LP 620-2 Super Trofeo is available to view at Lamborghini London now, priced at £200,000 excluding VAT.

CoinDirect runs ICO to offer decentralized platform for Casino industry.

Tuesday 23 May, 2017

Blockchain developer Nico Ami Lee announces the opening of the CoinDirect.io – an open source platform for online gambling where bitcoins & other major cryptoassets will be sent directly from player to player eliminating the third party. The mission behind project is to decentralize gambling experience further by moving casinos away from managing player's funds with help of well-established blockchain networks such as Bitcoin, Ethereum & BitShares.

Cryptocurrency became the choice for many online. However, it did not solve one of the oldest problems of online casinos - transparency of the house and high fees. Up until today online casinos try to stay transparent with a method called "Fairness Check", but often it does not work effectively as casinos always have the power to hide crucial information from the player. In order to prevent this from happening all casinos need to undergo regular and thorough audits. This leaves casinos dependent from the auditors and additional costs associated with such compliance increase costs in operating a gambling business.

Nico Ami Lee a co-founder of the CoinDirect.io, explains the potential of the upcoming project: "With such application platform customers can conveniently develop, run, and manage blockchain layer applications without the complexity of building and maintaining the infrastructure typically associated with developing or launching an app. The code execution platform enables developers to build and deploy a decentralized, automatic management of funds into almost any casino application without incurring any start-up costs. Therefore we create a truly transparent and decentralized solution to heavily regulated and relatively conservative market."

With the help of CoinDirect existing casino networks can save millions and new-players may get into the market with much less effort and costs. Main advantages of the platform:

1. Complete transparency, therefore no need of additional auditing2. Very low gambling fees3. Full control of funds4. Instant transactions5. Direct money transfers from player to player & much more.

An idea of establishing a blockchain PaaS company has been developed since 2015, and in early 2017, the legal entity of “Coin Direct Ltd.” was established. Company is headquartered in Honk-Kong and operates as a small team of 5, plus several supporting members.Team is raising money with help of crowdfunding campaign for further platform development. Company plans to launch a Beta version in October 15th and start mass-scale marketing of the platform from 1st of January, 2018. The token presale has started on 1st of April, 2017, ends on 31st of August, company issues 6,500 tokens on Bitcoin network. These tokens are designed to be used for dividend distribution and voting on the CoinDirect platform.

Millions of euros from Russia to Britain, via Cyprus

0
0
Tuesday 23 May, 2017

The activities of Russian oligarch Alexander Shchukin have thrown Cyprus into the whirlpool of international media. According to media reports, the Russian Authorities have asked, through Interpol, for details of Shchukin’s bank accounts and offshore companies, through which some €500 million appear to have been transferred from Russia to Britain.

The international media have implicated the Russian tycoon, who is currently under house arrest, in cases of conflict of interests in relation to the ownership of coal mines in southwestern Siberia, extortion and illicit acquisitions of assets.

Specifically, a recent report by Russian site www.versia.ru, which was based on an older report by British newspaper The Guardian, refers to Shchukin’s activities and to the suspicious routes of millions of euros from Russia to Britain, through companies with headquarters in Cyprus. It further notes that Shchukin would use illicit and unfair practices to blackmail his competitors, thus managing to bring coal mines under his control, which he would then transfer to Cypriot offshore companies.

The Guardian brought details of the way Shchukin operated to light. According to the British newspaper, the former director of the “Gramoteyinskaya” and “Tagaryshskaya” mines, Igor Rudyk, was arrested on the unprecedented charge of… having an expired passport! After being detained for 24 days, Rudyk was informed that he was facing a five-year prison sentence.

He later stated to The Guardian that they had offered to release him, with the condition that he would sign the concession of the coal mines. “I did it because I wanted to get out,” he stressed. According to the report, when the “Gramoteyinskaya” mine came into Shchukin’s possession, it was transferred to an offshore company in Cyprus, called “Cyrith Holding”.

“All the Russian businessmen knew that London was the best place to have their money and Cyprus the best transit point for this cause,” said versia.ru. The same report makes extensive reference to the activities of people in Shchukin’s close family circle. Specifically, the husband of Shchukin’s daughter Elena, Ildar Uzbekov, son of a former senior executive of Russian energy giant “Gazprom”, appears to be the individual in charge of transferring the capital from Russia to Britain, via companies registered in Cyprus.

“According to ancient Greek myth, the goddess Aphrodite was born on the island of Cyprus through the seafoam. Today, this myth has taken a different dimension: ‘dirty and criminal’ capital arrives from Russia to the island of Aphrodite. There it is laundered and then sent to the United Kingdom as clean money,” said versia.ru, adding that Shchukin, with the help of his son-in-law, transferred some €500 million to the United Kingdom through Cyprus.

Under house arrest for bribery with a BMW X5

A different case of attempting to extract a coal mine was the reason that led to Alexander Shchukin’s arrest, when the company’s major shareholder Razrez Inskoy appealed to the Federal Authorities of Russia. Two deputy governors, the head of the district Crime Investigation Department, the investigator and Alexander Shchukin’s associates were arrested as well.

According to a report by Russian newspaper Kommersant, Shchukin was charged with extortion and attempted bribery. In court he admitted to attempting to bribe the head of the district CID with a BMW X5 car. Today, he is under house arrest, while the Russian police appear to have applied to Interpol to investigate all of Shchukin’s offshore companies and bank accounts in Cyprus.

Cyprus Authorities “on edge”

While the uproar in the US over the moves of the former head of Donald Trump’s election campaign, Paul Manafort, via Cyprus continues with unabated vigour, the reports over the Shchukin case are intensifying concerns. Either way, the Republic’s Authorities have clarified that Cyprus has made all the necessary checks and signed agreements with foreign organisations for the best possible management of the phenomenon of tax evasion and money laundering.

They also stress that Cyprus underwent strict checks in the era of the bailout memorandum, while it continues to report to the EU as well as the IMF as regards money laundering. The Central Bank said in an announcement that it assesses and supervises the implementation of the requirements of the relevant legal and regulatory framework for money laundering by the supervised institutions, based on international and European standards.

Freevow® vs Groupon® – Zero fees UK startup targets giant on Twitter with their alternative approach

0
0
Wednesday 24 May, 2017

Twitter wars are great! snappy come backs are the usual response and these make for very entertaining reading.

It looked like we could be in for a great clash last week when UK based voucher startup “Freevow” tweeted this regarding their alternative zero fees approach to providing consumers with deals;

freevow‏ @freevowwhy buy a 1 hour photo shoot from @Groupon_UK when you get get one from @freevow for free! no commissi deals #justgettingstarted

This tweet was aimed at Groupons’ UK twitter account. We have seen Groupons’ Indian twitter account defend a similar tweet from company “Grab on” with devastating effect, an honest & brutal KO that “Grab On” did not defend, but Groupons’ UK twitter account had no response at all for Freevow.

Freevows’ alternative approach to providing consumers with deals, revolves around the idea of not charging businesses any fees. Freevow believe that this alternative approach allows businesses to make great deals without having to worry about large commission payments, hence “no commissi deals”.

So why no reply from Groupon on Twitter?

There are lots of possibilities here, it could be that Freevow really do have a valid point, they don’t charge any money for their service, as opposed to Groupon who often take commissions around the 50% mark and sometimes even 100%. A 100% commission sometimes means that the business will have to up-sell the customer to make any money.

Another possibility is that Groupon didn’t see the tweet, or maybe they just don’t take Freevow seriously.

Freevow are very small & new, with only 90 businesses registered on their site, although this number is sure to grow. They also don’t have Groupons’ advertising budget or enormous customer base, which means much less promotion for the offers on Freevow.

Freevow plan to eventually sell advertising space in premium locations on their site & app to generate revenue, some of which will be used to promote their offers. The also plan on selling listing enhancements, such as featured listings.

The hashtag used #justgettingstarted is accurate, Freevow have only just got started and signed their first business up in late March. Their app (available on Android & IOS) was only published a couple of weeks ago.

Freevow believe that their zero fees approach to providing consumers with deals means they will consistently have better offers than their big name competitors, only time will tell if they are right.

Institution of Mechanical Engineers chairman’s dinner raises over £5,000 for the sick children’s trust

Wednesday 24 May, 2017

The North East regional branch of The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) has raised an outstanding £5,050 for The Sick Children’s Trust from its annual Chairman’s dinner held earlier this month.

IMechE North East Chairman Chris Briggs chose The Sick Children’s Trust as the chosen charity for the event and hoped to raise £2,500 for the charity which supports families with children undergoing lifesaving treatment. However, following generous donations from attendees, a superb raffle and auction the evening doubled the initial fundraising target, raising over £5,000.

The Sick Children’s Trust runs ten ‘Homes from Homes’ across the country supporting families with seriously ill children in hospital. Two of its ‘Homes from Home’ are located in Newcastle upon Tyne at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital. The money raised from the North East IMechE dinner will go towards running both ‘Homes from Home’ in the North East. Chris Briggs says:

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to our sponsors, British Engines, and all our guests for making the event at Hardwick Hall such a huge success. Because of everyone’s support, we were able to raise more than double our target for The Sick Children’s Trust, a charity that helps so many families going through the most traumatic times. We hope the money raised will help The Sick Children’s Trust continue its great work and reach out to more families who needs its support.”

The Sick Children’s Trust supports over 4,000 families with seriously ill children in hospital every year. Caroline O’Doherty, Campaigns and Appeals Manager at The Sick Children’s Trust says:

“We’re absolutely delighted with the tremendous amount raised. The guests were so generous with their donations and we simply can’t thank Chris and the rest of the IMechE members enough for choosing The Sick Children’s Trust as the benefiting charity of the dinner.

“Thanks to everyone’s generosity, we can be there for the increasing number of families from the North East and beyond who rely on us to keep them together with their sick child.”

The Polybius Foundation Proudly Announces the Cryptobank Project and ICO Token Crowdsale

0
0
Wednesday 24 May, 2017

Bitcoin Press Release: Polybius Foundation, the organization behind upcoming Polybius cryptobank project announces its upcoming ICO.

May 24, 2017, Tallinn, Estonia – The Estonia-based new-age Polybius cryptobank project has announced the exact dates for its upcoming crowdsale. The ICO is set to launch on May 31, 2017, offering an opportunity to interested investors and cryptocurrency enthusiasts to become part of the project by contributing towards its development. Through the project, Polybius aims to bring digital technology to the forefront of e-commerce, digital identification and finance, revolutionizing the efficiency of the payments’ market with widespread digitization.

The project intends to improve the financial operations by implementing the latest technologies including distributed ledgers, Internet of Things, Big Data and more. These digital solutions, as a part of the Polybius cryptobank project, will enable it to offer more services to the potential customers than any other commercial bank or payment institution. The project model also eliminates the need for a physical location and multitude of staff to provide payment and identity verification services to individuals and businesses.

The team behind Polybius cryptobank project believe that the traditional banking system is comparatively inefficient with too many overhead costs and little integration. They have identified the room for improvement in the conventional banking model. With the new cryptobank project, Polybius intends to provide a combination of traditional as well as new-age banking and eCommerce services to the customers. Edgar Bers, the official representative of Polybius Foundation, outlining the shortcomings of traditional banks said,

“As usual, the principal factor is the human factor. In modern banks, there are far too many people who are really surplus to requirements. The people who deal with verification and transactions. Managers and clerks who work in offices, helping clients with operations that could be done online. Analysts who manage clients’ assets, studying the market and doing the trading. Even the cleaners who have to tidy up a huge area in these offices and bank departments every day — all this makes up a heavy load of expenditure which can and should be avoided.”

Edgar went on to offer a solution to the ineffectual staffing of traditional banks,

“Even skilled work can now be done by robots instead: for example, one recently-developed gadget at JP Morgan can analyze financial documents in seconds, which would previously have required 360,000 hours of work per year from lawyers and Loan Managers.”

Polybius will bring new, blockchain-based, decentralized technologies to its clients, effectively reducing costs and increasing disposable capital. Increasing revenues will translate to profitable annual dividends for investors and availability of additional funds for the platform’s further development.

Polybius project opted to go with an ICO crowdfunding over a traditional fundraising campaign as they believe that additional funds and potential savings could be better invested by the team’s developers, directly into the project. Also, the smart contracts associated with the ICO and tokens create a permanent relationship between the platform and token holders. This relationship or a “digital commitment” can play a major role in promoting the platform’s growth.

The tokens allotted to the participants in Polybius crowdfunding will also act as a written commitment by the cryptobank project to pay a share of its profits in the form of dividends to its holders. The use of Ethereum blockchain to create the Polybius tokens adds additional security while making it easier for people to handle, store and manage the cryptotokens. As crowdfunding participants hold on to the tokens, 20% of the redistributable profits generated by the platform will be distributed proportionally among all token holders. The distribution will happen automatically at the end of each financial year.

Polybius has set a goal of up to $25 million, which it plans to raise through the ICO, starting May 31, 2017. The funds raised during the ICO will be utilized for the development and promotion of cryptobank project. The platform will be soon announcing more information about the upcoming ICO on its website, newsletter and social media channels.

Polybius ICO Structure

Polybius Foundation aims to raise sufficient funds to support the establishment of its Polybius Project and to implement the new technologies required to exact significant change in the industry. The Polybius Foundation will issue and allocate Polybius Tokens (PLBT) through its Ethereum-based, smart-contract operated system. All funds raised from the ICO crowdsale will be invested towards the growth of the program.

About Polybius

Polybius Bank Project combines features of modern banking, IoT, Big Data and Blockchain-based technologies while also meeting security and UX requirements. YMCA Humber joins forces with YMCAs worldwide for anniversary basketball world challenge

Thursday 25 May, 2017

YMCA Humber is calling on the local community to come together and support its basketball challenge on Saturday 3 June, in the run up to the organisation’s 173rd anniversary next week.

YMCA Humber, which runs three housing projects and youth services working with over 500 young people every year, is offering a chance for people to get involved in the sport for the annual YMCA World Challenge. This will see YMCAs in 119 countries empower young people through basketball in celebration of the global charity’s birthday.

YMCA is using basketball, which was invented at YMCA Springfield College in the USA 125 years ago this year, to bring together young and old on the day to show that sport is more than just good fun, and at its best serves local communities and empowers young people.

Jonathan Byrne, Events and Marketing Lead, said: “Throughout the decades, we’ve had great innovations at YMCA including volleyball, futsal and, of course, basketball.

“Sport has been a vital part of YMCA since our early beginnings in 1844, so it’s a fitting tribute to our founder Sir George Williams to get as many people as possible involved in basketball as part of our world challenge.

“We will be holding a shooting hoops competition on Cleethorpes Seafront (near the Leisure Centre), where we will be seeing who can throw the most hoops in 60 seconds over the course of the day.”

Founded in 1844 by Sir George Williams, a worker in the drapery trade in London, YMCA now operates in 119 countries, supporting or working with 58 million people every year.

In England and Wales alone, YMCA works in 740 different communities impacting upon the lives of more than 630,000 people every year.

YMCA Humber’s World Challenge event will be held on Cleethorpes Seafront (near Cleethorpes Leisure Centre) on Saturday 3 June from 10am until 4pm. The activity costs 50p per person with all funds going to YMCA’s work with young people in local communities.

Family friend takes on immense 400-mile cycle challenge to say thank you to charity

Thursday 25 May, 2017

An Essex man is cycling 400 miles to raise money for The Sick Children’s Trust as thanks for supporting his friends when their three year old daughter almost died after contracting a deadly bacterial infection and pneumonia last year.

Steve will cycle 400 miles over three challenging rides to celebrate his friends’ daughter Mary’s brave fight against two life-threatening illness.

His close friends, John and Sarah, were left terrified when their healthy little girl became critically ill over the space of a weekend last July. Mary was rushed into the paediatric ward at Colchester Hospital after going into septic shock. Nurses and consultants fought to stabilise her with antibiotics, fluids and oxygen on the high dependency ward, but Mary’s condition soon deteriorated. She was put into an induced coma and rushed for specialist intensive care at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for lifesaving treatment.

After 48 hours with no sleep, John and Sarah were told that The Sick Children’s Trust was able to give them somewhere to stay, just minutes from their daughter’s hospital bedside. For the six weeks while Mary was in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, John and Sarah were supported by the charity’s free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation, Acorn House. Steve, who will be cycling for The Sick Children’s Trust in Mary’s honour, says:

“Mary had just turned three and was a happy and healthy child who was rarely unwell. It was devastating to hear from John that she was fighting for her life in Addenbrooke’s Hospital. I couldn’t believe it.

“He told me they were staying just a few minutes from Mary’s side at Acorn House, a free ‘Home from Home’ run by a charity called The Sick Children’s Trust. I was so impressed to hear how homely and welcoming Acorn House was and how close it was to where Mary was being treated. John told me they were even able to switch off their phones at night because there was a landline in their room and staff would call them directly from the ward if there were any changes in Mary’s condition. Mary was only three when she was struck by this life-changing illness – she had to have the fingertips on one of her hands removed.

“I took up cycling three years ago when I decided to fundraise for North London Hospice who had cared for my late mother just before she passed away. Since then, I have done other cycle events in her memory and with the help of friends and family raised nearly £7,000 for causes close to my heart, namely Cancer Research UK, Farleigh Hospice, WellChild and Scope. This year I am dedicating my efforts to Mary, who is an incredible child to have fought her way back from the edge. Mary and her parents are extremely determined and resilient, and with the support of their family and friends, Mary continues to makes progress daily.”

The Sick Children’s Trust runs ten ‘Homes from Home’ across the country, giving families with seriously ill children in hospital free accommodation. It costs the charity £30 to support a family for one night in a ‘Home from Home’. Acorn House Assistant Manager, Hayley Peckham, says:

“Mary is a little miracle. When I met John and Sarah they were not sure whether Mary would make a full recovery, she wasn’t even expected to survive the journey from Colchester to Cambridge. To see her now is just incredible.

“It’s wonderful to hear that Steve has decided to undertake these challenges for The Sick Children’s Trust. The money that Steve raises will make a huge difference, helping families who have a seriously ill child in hospital and need a ‘Home from Home’.”

Steve will be cycling 110 miles during Tour de Essex on 28 May, 160 miles during Coast to Coast in Yorkshire on 9 / 10 June, and then the remaining 130 miles in an unsupported ride on 24 / 25 June, hopefully accompanied by his young children for the final part of the 130 miles.

Plans to Equip Young People with Live Saving Skills Following Tragic Manchester Attack

Thursday 25 May, 2017

Xplode Magazine, based in Bolton has pledged to train young people across Greater Manchester in life-saving skills following Monday's terror attack on Manchester.

Xplode Magazine's CEO, Saeed Atcha said:

"At least 5 of our young volunteers were at the Ariana Grande concert on Monday night.

"We are deeply saddened and shocked at the news and when we found out that members of our team were amongst the concert-goers, there was a large level of pain. We're happy to say that they're all safe and well, though badly shook and upset.

"Our emergency services did a wonderful job running towards the danger, as we ran away from it and it's times like this that remind us of the importance of life-saving skills. At Xplode we aim to train Bolton's young people in emergency first aid and heart-start procedures so that young people can help.

"We've seen fantastic community spirit across Greater Manchester. There is more that unites us than divides us and we truly stand together, with Manchester."

The training, organised by a group of 14-20-year-olds will take place in locations across Greater Manchester.

Lydia German, a volunteer at Xplode says:

"If I was at the Arena on Monday, I wouldn't have even known what to do - I still feel helpless. Everybody should have basic first-aid skills to start with. I think this is important because you never know when you might it - it might not be at such a tragic event, it might even come in use at home.

"If you could save somebody's life in those crucial few minutes, it would just be amazing."

The plans for this training will be open to all of Bolton's young people and the details of the free training will be posted online at xplodemag.co.uk

Laura keeps on running for the British Tinnitus Association

Friday 26 May, 2017

25 May 2015 – As if completing the recent Birmingham Great Run 10k race in aid of the British Tinnitus Association (BTA) in a personal best time wasn’t enough, super speedy fundraiser Laura Lambden has a whole series of runs – both virtual and on the road – lined up for the summer!

Laura, from Birmingham, is taking on the challenge because tinnitus is a condition that not only Laura suffers from, but so do other members of her family. Laura explains: “Tinnitus is something that affected my gran from her late teens until her death at the age of 102. My mom has had it from childhood and so have I, off and on, until around a year ago when it became a permanent fixture in one ear. So far, it hasn't affected my hearing, but mom has lost some hearing in the upper range and my gran was always hard of hearing, and in the end, effectively deaf.”

Laura wanted to complete “A Run A Month” to raise awareness of tinnitus and to support the BTA: “Not enough is understood about tinnitus. Funding is needed to enable research into what causes it and to try to find a cure.”

Laura’s enthusiasm has even spread to her mum, Marion, who completed the Birmingham Great Run 10k with her! Laura’s next events will be an 10k virtual run in June, followed by the Newham Great Run 10k on 2 July and then another virtual run later that month – this time of 8 miles.

Anyone wishing to do so, can sponsor Laura via her online JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tinnitus or give £3 via text TINN68 £3 to 70070.

The British Tinnitus Association (BTA) is an independent charity which supports thousands of people who experience tinnitus and advises medical professionals from across the world.

The BTA is the primary source of support and information for people with tinnitus in the UK, facilitating an improved quality of life. They aim to encourage prevention through its educational programme and to seek effective treatment for tinnitus through a medical research programme.

The support the BTA offers to 335,000 people per year who are affected by tinnitus is reliant upon the generous donations of their supporters and fundraisers. They receive no government support and need to raise half a million pounds each year to continue their UK wide support. Donations can be made via www.tinnitus.org.uk

Not an illness or disease, tinnitus is a term that describes the sensation of hearing a noise in the absence of an external sound. The noise can have virtually any quality. Ringing, whistling, and buzzing are common, but more complex sounds may also be reported. Troublesome tinnitus can be very distressing for the affected individual, and issues may arise with sleep, concentration and mood. However, in many cases, subtle changes in people’s environment can address these issues, and improve quality of life.

The experienced team at the BTA understands the impact that tinnitus can have on the lives of those who experience tinnitus and those who live with them, so seeks to provide the most appropriate and expert advice and information free of charge – via a confidential freephone helpline on 0800 018 0527 and online at www.tinnitus.org.uk. The BTA can also post printed and audio information and advice.

FRANK Water goes single-use plastic free and launches #PledgeToRefill campaign

0

Friday 26 May, 2017

Safe water charity and social enterprise FRANK Water has ended all sales of its bottled spring water in single-use plastic bottles. It is the first UK bottled water company to discontinue use of single-use plastic bottles and switch to 100% environmentally sustainable solutions. The announcement comes at the launch of its #PledgeToRefill campaign, which calls on all consumers to carry a refillable water bottle with them to stay hydrated without the need to purchase water (or other drinks) in single-use plastic bottles.

FRANK Water founder and Chief Executive Katie Alcott says:

“We have always been committed to being transparent and open about our social enterprise business and charitable activities – hence the name FRANK Water. We have been working towards this announcement for some time now and feel hugely positive about our decision to end the sale of FRANK Water in single-use plastic bottles. Although we are not an environmental campaigning organisation, our mission and objectives are closely aligned to our friends and colleagues across the environmental sector. We want our announcement to give them hope that change is coming, and to encourage consumers to choose to refill rather than continue polluting our planet with toxic plastic waste.”

FRANK Water will continue to sell water in glass bottles, which are made from 32% recycled material, are 100% recyclable and can be reused indefinitely. Stockists are being offered alternative ways of supporting FRANK Water, including refill solutions and refillable bottles.

The campaign is already attracting support. Pat Fitzsimons, Director at Thames Estuary Partnership, says:

“Everyone here at Thames Estuary Partnership is thrilled with the news that FRANK Water has discontinued selling spring water in single-use plastic. Our determination to slow the rising tide of single-use plastic bottles in the Thames can only be strengthened by FRANK Water’s #PledgeToRefill campaign and we shall be urging all our supporters to sign up. FRANK’s work in India and Nepal highlights the importance of valuing our incredible clean water and sanitation systems here in the UK where we just don’t need to buy drinks in one-use packaging.”

While using a refillable water bottle is the best way to stay hydrated on the move, if you are thirsty and are without a refillable bottle, a bottle of water, with a charitable donation, remains the healthiest and most ethical option on the shelf. However, single-use plastic bottles, usually made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), make up the largest proportion of plastic bottle waste in the UK but only 57% is collected for recycling*. The rest is sent to landfill or ends up as litter, polluting our planet and its people. This compelling evidence and a growing movement to reduce or end plastic waste worldwide has compounded FRANK Water’s decision to discontinue selling water in single-use plastic bottles and offer more sustainable one-use plastic-free drinking water solutions.

Katie Alcott continues:

“This decision will undoubtedly hit our bottom line this year, and for years to come, but we are committed to being as ethical and environmentally sustainable as possible while continuing to fund safe, clean water projects in our partner regions in India and more recently Nepal. It feels like the right time to be doing it but we know we’re small fry when compared to the bigger fish in the single-use plastic ocean. Let’s hope our announcement is the first drop that is needed to create a ripple effect on a much larger scale in the coming months and years.”

You can join the campaign and #PledgeToRefill on the FRANK Water website at www.frankwater.com/refill. You can purchase a Frank Water refillable bottle here and find out more about the work of FRANK Water here.

#PledgeToRefill

FRANK Water has teamed up with friends and supporters for the #PledgeToRefill campaign to mark its discontinuation of single-use plastic bottles. When supporter pledge milestones are reached, FRANK Water will receive bonus funding from corporate partners allowing it to ensure access to safe, clean water for thousands more people across India and Nepal.

You can add your voice to the campaign by committing to use refillable bottles and coffee cups rather than single-use plastic bottles and disposable cups. Safe water saves lives and together we can make a difference to people and our environment. Visit the website to find out more and pledge today!

Comments from retailers in support of #PledgeToRefill

Watershed, Bristol | Stockist and supporter of FRANK Water for over 5 years

“In response to FRANK Water’s admirable decision to stop selling water in single-use plastic bottles, we have switched our order to glass bottles. As a charitable organisation, situated on Bristol’s historic harbourside and committed to being as responsible and ethical as possible – in line with what our customers expect of us – we are pleased to be able to support this move to a more sustainable future for us all.”

James Taljaard, General Manager

Jones Boatyard, Cambridge | Stockist and supporter of FRANK Water for over 10 years

“We have always supported the great work of FRANK Water and have been buying their bottled spring water by the pallet to sell in our boatyard chandlery for over 10 years. It came as a surprise, therefore, to learn that FRANK would no longer be supplying plastic bottled water but as a company with a close relationship to the environment, particularly the waterways, we completely understand that continued use of single-use plastic is not sustainable and is damaging our planet. With this in mind we have installed a FRANK Water cooler in the shop and will now encourage our customers to use re-fillable bottles. I think it is a brave and noble decision by FRANK to make this change and they should be commended for it - let’s hope others will follow suit. We will continue to donate and support Frank in all their future ventures.”

Ben Jones, owner

3 Students send 300 essential items to homeless across the UK through their brand new social enterprise

Friday 26 May, 2017

300 items in 4 different packs - ‘Keep Dry’, ‘Keep Warm’ and, both male and female, ‘Freshen Up’ packs have been distributed to tackle some of the physical challenges rough sleepers face everyday.

Nottingham, UK – People of the Streets CIC (POTS). The student organisation is already well on their way to success having won the 123 Reg Crowdfunder competition for social enterprises. The not-for-profit developed a unique model to bridge the divide between the public and the marginalised homeless population and raised in excess of £5000 on their initial Crowdfunding campaign.

In a direct response to Nottingham City Council’s ghastly campaign against begging, one that was ultimately banned by the Advertising Standards Agency, the students set-up People of the Streets CIC to offer another way the public can help this marginalised group of society. A way in which the public can give funds with complete assurance as to what the money is spent on.

An alternative way of giving

“We were outraged by the advertisement. It was callous, and it cast such negative stereotypes over people who already have it hard enough. Worst of all; it offered no alternative way of giving. It came across like an attack.” Alex Greenhalgh, Operations Director.

Just Getting Started

“We’re very proud of course, but this is just the first month. Homelessness is a growing issue in the UK and as such, our aim is to grow the help we can give” Qas Hussain, Finance Director.

What’s on the horizon?

People of the Streets CIC will be launching Stories of the Streets (SOTS), in Nottingham City Centre, later this year. "It's an exhibition that aims to change the way we view homelessness, highlight organisations that tackle the issues surrounding it and inform the public of how they can help too" Charles Kerr, Managing Director.
