Monday 5 February, 2018

5th February 2018: British blockchain startup Electroneum, has today announced it has become the first cryptocurrency to join the GSMA in a move that will accelerate its integration into the world of mobile payments.

Electroneum has been making waves beyond the crypto niche, signing MOUs with several global telecommunications and payments companies. In addition, the cryptocurrency has been invited to exhibit at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from 26th February to 1st March 2018. Founder Richard Ells has also been invited to speak at the conference, which will be attended by some of the world’s biggest names in mobile technology.

By exhibiting at the Mobile World Congress, Electroneum is taking a step further than any cryptocurrency has gone before on the road to mass user adoption.

GSMA, which represents the interests of mobile operators across the world and counts nearly 800 operators among its members, runs the Mobile World Congress events. These events showcase the latest in mobile and payments technologies, especially those with the potential to create a better future.

Electroneum (ETN) is the perfect first cryptocurrency to become a member of GSMA and exhibit at its famous conference - its technology and strategy entirely revolve around mobile. The Electroneum mobile mining app will allow any user with a smartphone, anywhere in the world, to get involved and begin earning cryptocurrency at the touch of a button. The team behind the coin is working on giving these users a way to spend their earnings by partnering with mobile providers, several of whom have already agreed to formally begin the process of accepting ETN as payment for mobile data.

It’s by this method that Electroneum hopes to achieve mass, world-wide adoption and thereby revolutionise the crypto economy.

Electroneum will have a stand throughout the conference, and founder Richard Ells will be speaking and taking part in a panel discussion on 26th February about ‘Mobile Identity’. More details will be announced soon on the Electroneum website: electroneum.com

Doncaster, Yorkshire, UK is ALIVE! The Tyram Lakes Hotel, Spa and Resort

Monday 5 February, 2018

Since Rothgen Capital UK announced the launch of the latest funding round for The Tyram Lakes Hotel, Spa and Resort in Hatfield, near Doncaster in Yorkshire UK, Doncaster as an area has been attracting a significant amount of new attention, both domestic and internationally.

As well as Doncaster’s undeniable horse racing heritage, it has a surprising amount to offer in other areas. This has recently been demonstrated by Amazon, IKEA, Tesco, Lidl, BMW, Asda et al who are all utilising the convenient geographical location for their large distribution centres, plus Doncaster’s obvious proximity to significant transport and travel capabilities, including Doncaster Sheffield (formerly Robin Hood) airport. Amongst other news of note, the Yorkshire Wildlife Park has recently announced its £50M expansion which will potentially make it a top UK destination.

With so much international attention now focussing on the Doncaster area in general, can it be much wonder that property developers have started exploring possibilities in the region? With infrastructure improving weekly, and demonstrable confidence from some of the world’s best known companies, the luxury property sector is finally also taking notice.

One of these sector members is Rothgen Capital’s Tyram Lakes project, which uses cutting edge ecological and eco-friendly innovations as its basis, and is leading the field in this kind of development, thus of particular interest to energy focussed investors and the media alike. In the centre of the Humberside Peatlands, Hatfield Moor and the National Nature Reserve in South Yorkshire, plans are already approved for 325 luxury eco-lodges set on and around 65 acres of lakes adjacent to 100 acres of natural woodlands, plus the hotel and spa, constituting The Tyram Lakes Hotel, Spa and Resort.

There are two types of eco-lodges. About a third of the lodges (125) will be floating structures, and a further 200 will be set amid the vast woodlands. Available from two to four bedrooms versions, all lodges will blend into the landscape providing private hideaways with natural spaces all around. Lodge features include rooftop gardens fitted with solar panels, decking areas with sunken spa bath and a choice of classic or contemporary interiors.

In the centre of the resort will sit the planned boutique hotel by Den Architecture in association with Baca Architects, who are specialists in eco-friendly and amphibious projects. This unique hotel will offer 104 rooms, conference facilities, a fine dining restaurant with lakeside views, an indoor pool, leisure club, spa, gymnasium, and a picturesque wedding and party venue.

How did this happen?

Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council approved the application to build the green resort in December 2016, commencing with the first phase of 50 eco-lodges.

The scheme comprises four phases of development:

Phase1 – 50 Lakeside and floating lodgesPhase2 – 104 Bedroom Hotel, Spa, and Leisure CentrePhase3 - 75 Lakeside and floating lodgesPhase4 - 200 Woodland retreat lodges

.... and embraces the very latest science and technology to create a resort which is designed to function through environmentally accredited solutions that are energy efficient, all of which engage and sustain the local ecosystems.

“The scale and ambitious nature of the plans will ensure the resort is one the most luxurious, fun and relaxing holiday destinations in Europe. This green development will be as sustainable as it’s currently possible to build, and be exemplary case study for other developers,” says Baca Associate, Andrew Scrace.

Ecological solutions

Geyser Thermal Energy (GTE) has designed from scratch the heating and hot water system for the resort without a significant negative impact on the local ecology. Using the main lake as a heat source for the lodges, coupled with various (non-chemical) water filtration processes, energy consumption and the need for chemicals is vastly reduced.

This innovative renewable heating system coupled with highly efficient and ecologically sound water solutions leads also to minimal running costs and environmental impact for the development.

The Laws of Attraction

Funding rounds by property developers are executed in a number of ways ranging from loans, finance and bridging through to private capital, usually with ease for potential investors in mind. In its hallmark innovative fashion, Rothgen/Tyram Lakes have engaged the Accounting Worx Group, based in Reading UK (along with international presence), who have designed and implemented specific financial instruments for the project to enable investors to participate quickly and easily. These range from bonds through to larger private capital arrangements – all being very attractive for new participants.

The investment interest attracted by Tyram Lakes is not just from the Green and Eco sectors. The inherent design and sustainability factors have led to the world famous ARMANI fashion house /brand becoming involved with the design of a selection of exclusive lodges on the site. This means that The Tyram Lakes Resort & Spa is the first holiday resort inside the UK to have Armani participating in this way.

Natural England too have partnered with Tyram, who have a sizeable park neighbouring Tyram Lakes, and who also have given complimentary access for Tyram Lakes visitors, enabling yet more acres for hiking, trails, and exploration.

With all this happening then, it’s no surprise that Hoseasons, the UK’s largest park operator, are on board. They believe that Tyram could become a flagship park to sit within the Hoseasons Portfolio and have provided projected rental incomes and occupancy levels to back this up showing strong returns, thus providing evidential balance sheet background for those wishing to invest.

Finishing off this latest update, Rothgen and Tyram Lakes are pleased to announce the arrival of Royal patronage in the form of Princess Alexandra Cantacuzene-Speransky who will also be delighted to welcome new participants and investors to the project.

So, Doncaster, Yorkshire, UK is ALIVE, and The Tyram Lakes Resort & Hotel is inviting investors to play along......

Father and daughter fundraisers race ahead for hospice

$

Tuesday 6 February, 2018

A
father and daughter fundraising team from Cleethorpes have donated over £2,500
to St Andrew’s Hospice thanks to two fabulous running efforts.

Carl and Annie Henry put on
their running shoes and raised money for St Andrew’s Hospice in two very
different athletic events.

A keen runner, Carl completed
the endurance of the 26.2-mile Snowdonia Marathon late last year, before
daughter Annie, 8, took on a three-mile pyjama run around Cleethorpes Country
Park.

Carl completed the marathon
challenge in North Wales in under five hours and spoke about the endurance
needed for such an event.

He said: “I had completed a
marathon before and wanted another challenge, so decided to take on the
Snowdonia marathon.

“For 20 miles it is a tough
enough marathon, with several hilly climbs, but the last six miles sees runners
climb Snowdonia and then come down the other side to the finish line – so it is
a real sting in the tail!”

Carl also spoke about his
reasons for doing the event and also how his running inspired daughter Annie.

He continued: “St Andrew’s is a
local charity that I wanted to support.

“It is a place full of
wonderful people who do wonderful things and I just wanted to do my bit.

“Annie got inspired by my
running as I got closer to doing the marathon and she set up her own run off
her own back and got friends and relatives to rally round and join her or
sponsor.”

Looking for a unique way to
make her run memorable, Annie donned pyjamas for the race around Cleethorpes
Country Park, which took place on Saturday 6 January.

“I was inspired by my daddy who
ran a marathon for charity and I decided to do something to help a local
charity too,” she said.

“I thought a fun run in fancy
dress would be a good way to raise some money and I can get my friends involved
too.

“A massive thank you to
everyone who came down today to run with me; I completed three miles without
stopping, I was so happy to see everyone there.

“Also a massive thank you to
everyone who sponsored me and helped me hit my target.

Carl and Annie came to the
hospice recently to present their cheques to Theresa Crowe, Charity Fundraising
and Events Co-ordinator.

Theresa
spoke about how overwhelmed she is by the charity’s supporters and what they do
for the hospice.

She
said: “The father and daughter fundraiser really touched me because it just
shows whatever your age you can do something to support your local charity.

“And
you can spend time with your family supporting each other having fun and keeping
active too.

“Annie
was inspired by her dad and that gave her the idea to do ‘Annie’s Funny Run’.

“Carl
and Annie have done amazing and we truly appreciate them thinking of St Andrew’s
Hospice.

“They
visited us to do a cheque presentation and Annie seemed excited to hear she
will receive a special thank you letter and certificate, which she can proudly
take to show everybody at school.”

The
funds raised by Carl and Annie will go towards the hospice’s current running
costs of £4.8-million, the majority of which the organisation has to fund
itself.

Inclusive dance charity to return to Edinburgh Fringe

Tuesday 6 February, 2018

Dancers with an inspiring local dance company are excited to be returning to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival after a huge success in 2017.

DanceSyndrome is a small local charity based in Lancashire. The charity, founded by dancer Jen Blackwell, who happens to have Down's syndrome, provides inclusive dance workshops and leadership training for people with and without disabilities. DanceSyndrome's dancers also perform live at special events across the UK with the aim of inspiring people and demonstrating that people with disabilities can live a life of their choosing and demonstrate that their abilities are more important than their disabilities.

In 2017, the dancers followed their dreams and performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the world's largest arts festival. This was a huge opportunity for the dancers to shine on an international stage and audiences at the festival were surprised and delighted at the passion, energy and ability of the dancers, who have overcome many personal barriers to achieve success.

The DanceSyndrome dancers had an amazing experience in Edinburgh, learning lots about the performance industry, including how to successfully promote their own show to get a good audience. The success of the 2017 trip gave the dancers a significant confidence boost and as a result, they now feel able to do an even bigger trip to the Fringe in August 2018.

Dance Leader Becky Rich speaks out positively about how having Down’s syndrome does not define her. About last year’s Edinburgh shows Becky said "We were very touched by the positive response that we received when handing out our flyers on the Royal Mile to promote our show. Also we had fantastic audiences on both days which made it really special for us as performers and we think we really connected with the audiences in a special way. We all had a very special and fun time in Edinburgh."

Inspired by the dancers' confidence and ambition, the DanceSyndrome team were challenged to enable them to turn their dreams into a reality. They are currently working hard to generate enough sponsorship from businesses and individuals to cover the costs of a longer stay in Edinburgh.

The dancers will also be taking fundraising into their own hands to generate the money needed to fund the cost of the rehearsal process, performance space, performance marketing, travel and accommodation for themselves and their carers/support.

DanceSyndrome Managing Director, Dawn Vickers, said "We have been overwhelmed by the success of our 2017 Fringe Festival performance and we are so proud of what our dancers have achieved! We are absolutely thrilled at the prospect of returning to Edinburgh in 2018 and we are really inspired by the ambition and determination of our dancers to raise the money to make this a reality. I really hope that local people and business will get behind their appeals and help them to follow their dreams!"

If you would like to support the 2018 trip to Edinburgh, you can donate via Just Giving www.justgiving.com/dance-syndrome

If you have any great ideas for fundraising and would like to get involved, please contact the DanceSyndrome team on 07597 942494, email info@dancesyndrome.co.uk or via the website www.dancesyndrome.co.uk

THE LONDON FOREX SHOW 2018

A one-day exhibition and event for today’s retail trader

Friday 23rd February 2018; Novotel London West

Today’s trader faces some very tough choices. The good news is – there has never been so much information, so many different trading options and new strategies to choose from. The bad news is - there has never been so much information, so many different trading options, and new strategies to choose from.

The London Forex Show, sponsored by FinecoBank, Globitex and Bitstocks is here to help traders navigate their way through an increasingly diverse and opaque industry. To help them plan a clear, achievable path to trading success, by setting realistic goals and finding out how, what and where to go to make them a reality.

“We’re glad to take part to The London Forex Show because it gives us the opportunity to show visitors our complete offer of trading products, characterized by a very good value for money. It represents an important chance for FinecoBank, which has recently entered in the extremely competitive and sophisticated UK market with an offer of OTC products such as CFDs with spreads among the best in the market. We’re convinced that the solidness of Fineco and its one-stop-solution model, able to meet all financial needs from one single account, will be increasingly appreciated by UK customers.”

Paolo Di Grazia, deputy general manager, FINECOBANK, Headline Sponsors of the London Forex Show

With cryptocurrency taking centre-stage at the moment, the London Forex Show provides traders with a chance to hear from professional traders about this exciting new market – and the potential pitfalls to watch out for.

Now in its 8th year, the London Forex Show has welcomed over 15,000 delegates through the doors in that time.

From learning which trading opportunities will best serve their needs, to making new contacts and discovering more about trading: options trading, commodities trading, currency trading and how day trading can complement an existing portfolio. The London Forex Show brings it all together in one place, for one day, for traders.

Silver Sponsors, Bitstocks, said, “Cryptocurrency experienced astronomical levels of interest and growth towards the end of 2017, and as a result, we saw a flood of uneducated money pour into the market when prices were at all-time highs. Many are now sitting with huge losses after one of the most dramatic corrections in recent years. One of the key tenets of Bitstocks is to provide education and share knowledge of this often misunderstood and rather complex market, so as sponsors of this year’s event, I am pleased to have the opportunity to do so at the London Forex Show. With a clear understanding of the underlying principles and innate potential of cryptocurrency, as well as a solid evaluation strategy based on coin fundamentals, investors can weather these times of volatility, confident in the fact that utility will prevail, and trump any hype-based positions in the long run.”

- Michael Hudson, Founder and CEO, Bitstocks

Liza Aizupiete, Managing Director of Globitex said, “We’re delighted to sponsor the London Forex Show – it’s a terrific forum for traders to find out more about the fast-moving crypto space, and the companies that can help them, like Globitex”.

The London Forex Show features 5 independent trading workshops, a wide range of free seminars, live debates and interviews throughout the day, a 90-minute LIVE trading session, a Lunchtime Summit panel session and a live Cryptocurrency panel session (chaired by Alpesh Patel) as well as an interactive exhibition featuring some of the top banks and brokers, education companies, data providers and trading software – it’s a very busy and exciting day for all concerned.

Sponsored by FinecoBank, and with Media support from the acclaimed Investors Chronicle, the London Forex Show is designed specifically to provide independent training and education to active traders in the UK, supporting individuals who seek to boost profits through trading, secure an income stream in retirement, enhance returns through investing, and/or to make a full-time career in trading.

Lisa Campbell, Managing Director of Investor Conferences (UK) Ltd, Organisers of the London Forex Show says, “We are delighted that FinecoBank have taken this opportunity to show their support for retail traders in the UK. For delegates, the London Forex Show offers a unique, live forum, where delegates can learn new trading skills, meet and speak to the people in the industry, explore new opportunities and share experiences with like-minded traders. It’s a valuable day for helping today’s trader find their bearings, and position themselves for profit in 2018 .”

Doors open promptly at 9.30 am and the show runs right through until 5.00 pm, providing a packed schedule throughout. Join us for a day at the London Forex Show, and immerse yourself in the world of trading, under one roof, for one day.

“GivenGain Teams is pitched at event organisers and corporate social investment [CSI] managers around the globe and works by leveraging the personal networks of staff or event participants fundraising together for any charity registered on GivenGain,” says Marius Maré, GivenGain marketing manager.

A Team-based approach allows fundraising to quickly increase an event or company’s social impact. “The average GivenGain fundraiser raises $500, so if a Team gets 1,000 supporters, it can raise $500,000,” says Maré.

“Teams really raises the bar in group fundraising, offering a slick and easy-to-use way to automate and consolidate your fundraising. It also allows you to see your social impact in one dashboard view, and to easily share it with the world or investors. In addition, it offers event organisers brand control over the fundraising already happening in conjunction with their event, as well as the ability to attract more entrants in future with the option to fundraise.”

How does it work?

A Team fundraising organiser must register on GivenGain to create a Team fundraising page.

Team members are then invited to start individual fundraising projects linked to the account and to share it with their family and friends to ask for donations. Specific charities can be linked as beneficiaries, either by the organiser or Team members.

A non-profit for non-profits

GivenGain Teams is only the latest addition in a growing stable of fundraising solutions on the GivenGain platform, including individual fundraising for charity and direct fundraising by charities.

Since 2001, GivenGain has helped charities in 60 countries receive millions from donors and fundraisers all over the world.

Whereas other fundraising platforms commonly allow anyone to benefit from the generosity of donors, GivenGain strictly benefits charities only.

In addition, it does not make a profit from the processing of donations. The GivenGain Foundation is a non-profit organisation registered in Switzerland, uniquely making it “a non-profit for non-profits” whose sole purpose is to enable social change through fundraising.

It takes only 90 seconds to set up a Teams fundraising page and share it. Sign up your corporate or event today!

Rare high-altitude money spider discovered near Loch Ness

Wednesday 7 February, 2018

Surveys at Trees for Life’s Dundreggan Conservation Estate in Glenmoriston near Loch Ness have revealed a rare money spider in a find described by experts as “spectacular”.

The discovery of an adult male of the species Hilaira nubigena at the native forest restoration site in Inverness-shire is the first record of the spider west of the Great Glen for more than 25 years.

The rare arachnid has been recorded from damp moorland above 400m and up to 700m, but little is known about its habits. It may be characteristic of high-altitude habitats such as ‘montane woodland’ – a waist-high mini-forest found on mountainsides, which is home to a unique range of species. Unfortunately this important habitat is overgrazed, and most of it has already disappeared in Scotland.

“This really spectacular find shows that the habitat at Dundreggan is rather special,” said Edward Milner, who identified the spider, and who has been studying spiders in Scotland for over 20 years.

“Some of the spider species that we find in the montane woodland on the estate are also found in the Arctic. They are adapted to surviving the extreme conditions that we can experience here. I last saw this spider near the summit of Liathach in Wester Ross in June 1986.”

The few recent records of Hilaira nubigena in Scotland are all from south of the Great Glen, with a few records from mountains on the west coast. It has only been recorded from 14 sites throughout Scotland, including a recent one above 500m in the Carrifran Valley near Moffat.

Doug Gilbert, Trees for Life’s Operations Manager at Dundreggan, said: “Discovering another rare species in this corner of the Highlands highlights why it’s so important to protect and restore the Caledonian Forest, with its important but vanishing habitats like montane woodland.

“We hope to carry out further work to find out more about the fascinating species living on Scotland’s highest hills. We’ve already recorded several interesting montane spiders at Dundreggan, and we suspect others are waiting to be found.”

The money spider family is a large group of small to minute spiders mostly under 5mm long. Their name comes from the folklore that it’s lucky to get one caught in your hair – and will bring you increased wealth.

The discovery of Hilaira nubigena and other montane spiders adds to Dundreggan’s reputation as a biodiversity-rich ‘lost world’. Of the more than 3,300 species already found on the estate, some were previously unknown in the UK or Scotland, or feared extinct. The site’s 11 UK biodiversity firsts are a non-biting midge, three sawflies, an aphid, two aphid parasitoids, three fungus gnats, and a mite.

Members of the public can volunteer to help plant trees at Dundreggan as part of Trees for Life’s award-winning restoration of the Caledonian Forest. The charity’s rewilding activity also includes working for the return of rare woodland wildlife and plants, and carrying out innovative scientific research and education programmes. Controlling potato store environments with polyurethane insulation

Wednesday 7 February, 2018

Controlling a potato store environment can be a risky business – with farmers running the risk of ruined crops. During spells of cold, wintry weather the internal surfaces of agricultural buildings can become wet with condensation and severely damage the potato harvest. By insulating the building this risk can be substantially reduced.

A closed-cell spray applied polyurethane foam insulant can be used directly onto the internal surfaces of the building façade. This will insulate the building and help to regulate the temperature so that sudden hot or cold temperature variations are not so likely. As the insulant is sprayed straight on to the building substrate this helps to seal the building and control internal temperatures.

Insulating the agricultural building allows the sugar levels of stored crops to be maintained for longer and lower temperatures can preserve potato quality.

Sprayed polyurethane foam is a simple task for a professionally trained installer. The association representing spray foam installers for agriculture and other sectors is the British Urethane Foam Contractors Association. The association has a list of registered installers at www.bufca.co.uk.

Application is a speedy process as installers are adept at installing large areas very quickly. The insulant is sprayed on and cures to form a robust, rigid layer of highly efficient insulation.

Closed cell polyurethane foam has been around for over 40 years. The polyurethane insulant is a two-component liquid system which produces a highly-efficient blanket of insulation with an exceptional thermal conductivity figure. Systems can be applied to various depths and have K-values in the range of 0.025 to 0.028W/mK.

Farmers know that the risk of condensation, freezing temperatures or the lack of a controlled temperature environment may be disastrous for potato crops. However, there is no longer any need to run this risk as a simple application of sprayed foam can help to maintain a healthy potato stock.

The March Hair - the effortless campaign to get people walking again in West Africa

Wednesday 7 February, 2018

Campaign date: March 1st-31st 2018

This March, let it grow. Pledge to not shave or trim your leg-hair for the full 31 days of March. Get nice and hairy and also help people that can’t grow hair on at least one of their legs!

Meet Legs4Africa supporter and the brains behind the campaign - Jo Burgess. For the month of March Jo has pledged to ‘cultivate her fur’ in a ploy to kick back at societal norms while supporting amputees in West Africa.

“I often feel that society expects women to have smooth legs and armpits, and it is almost controversial to let your hair grow in these places. I have heard of people in the service industry being told to trim themselves because of customer complaints, which would never be asked of a man.

I think it is time to make a stand and become a ‘March Hair’. I will not be shaving any part of my body during March and will hopefully feel empowered and confident with my new furry fur.

The social stigma that women receive for having leg hair is bad in the UK. But the stigma surrounding disability in West Africa can be extreme.

I will be supporting Legs4Africa as they help amputees in West Africa to acquire prosthetic legs, find community support and help quash the stigma that disabled people receive. I will know that the hair growth on my legs will be helping people that cannot grow hair on at least one of their legs.”

Legs4Africa is a grassroots organisation based in Bristol. Since the charity’s founding in 2014, they have sent over 4,000 prosthetic legs out to people across the developing world, but predominantly in The Gambia. Here in the UK, prosthetics are not recycled. Over in Africa, prosthetics are not readily available. So the Legs4Africa team put two and two together and get those limbs out to the people that need them most.

Next month, why not join the team and, through making no effort at all, support some of the most disadvantaged amputees in the world. All you need to do is set up your JustGiving page by clicking here and throw away that razor. It’s as simple as that.

If you would like to read more about Jo’s story click here or for any further information on Legs4Africa and their work in The Gambia email hello@legs4africa.org

Open College of the Arts and UCA celebrate 30 years of creativity for everyone

Wednesday 7 February, 2018

30 years after Michael Young, Lord Young of Dartington, announced the foundation of the Open College of the Arts (OCA) at London’s Royal Academy of Arts, OCA Principal Will Woods and University for the Creative Arts (UCA) Vice-Chancellor Professor Bashir Makhoul are inviting former OCA students to join them in celebrating 30 years of creativity through distance learning. OCA became part of the University for the Creative Arts, the UK’s number one specialist university for the creative arts, in 2016.

To launch the campaign, OCA students and tutors joined the Principal and the Vice Chancellor at the gallery@oxo on London’s South Bank. Showcase, a week-long exhibition of student and alumni work, will open at the gallery on 24 October. The public exhibition, the culmination of OCA’s 30th anniversary campaign, will champion OCA’s and UCA’s commitment to making university-level creative arts study accessible for everyone.

The nine-month campaign, which coincides with UCA’s 150th anniversary, will give students and alumni the opportunity to feature in films, exhibit in the #weareOCA30 online gallery, and download special release online courses on subjects from photography to fine art.

Will Woods said: ‘There are thousands of adults all over the country with the ambition to study the creative arts at higher level but whose personal circumstances mean that studying full-time at a campus university is out of reach. OCA is for them. If you have studied with OCA in the past, no matter how long ago, we’d love you to get in touch and tell us where your creative journey has taken you.’

OCA Principal Will Woods also announced a 30th anniversary bursary to support a student through an OCA undergraduate degree programme. The bursary will be funded from an auction of 30 individual artists’ book editions of a collection of 30 essays on creativity being commissioned as part of the campaign.

Professor Makhoul, an internationally renowned fine artist in his own right, said: ‘The opportunity that OCA provides to study for a qualification from anywhere at a distance has opened the door for so many artists and creative practitioners. As UCA’s reputation has grown world-wide, the addition of OCA offers a unique route to a creative arts degree for those who find that more traditional study options aren’t suitable to match their ambition. This campaign exposes the true diversity and talent UCA wishes to nurture by developing its distance learning portfolio through the OCA.’

Free creative courses for everyone

Between now and September, OCA will be publishing a series of foundation-level short courses which will be free to anyone who wants to download them. Courses include Key Ideas in Photography, which looks at concepts in contemporary photographic theory, and Studying the Creative Arts in HE, which prepares students for studying the creative arts in higher education. Students will learn the basics of traditional art and design practice through lessons on topics ranging from mark making and mixing colour, to drawing from portraits and painting the landscape.

The first course in the series, Art & Design - 30th Anniversary Edition, is being published today. The course takes around six hours to complete and uses material from OCA’s first course, Art & Design, published in 1988. Visit open.oca.ac.uk/courses/art-design-30-anniversary to download the course free.

Farmers, firefighters and a circuit judge

The first students began studying with OCA in January 1988. Among them were architects, cooks, dentists, teachers, waiters, farmers, firefighters, accountants, taxi drivers, hoteliers, midwives and a circuit judge. Students studied for a day a week at home and attended a three-hour tutorial every three weeks in one of 30 colleges around the country involved in the OCA pilot.

Speaking about his vision for the creative arts to be taught at home Michael Young said: ‘We are challenging the orthodoxy that you can only teach the rudiments of art, craft and design in a studio.’ 30 years later, more than 50,000 people have studied with OCA, ranging in age from 18 to 80+.

OCA now offers 12 undergraduate degrees, in drawing, fine art, graphic design, illustration, moving image, music, painting, photography, textiles, visual communications, creative writing and the creative arts. Students who want to find out if studying the creative arts at higher level is for them can sign up for one of OCA’s Foundations courses. In 2012, OCA launched the first MA Fine Art in Europe to be studied entirely through online distance learning.

Making university accessible for more people

Many students choose OCA because they want to fit their studies in with work, travel and family commitments. For others, online and distance learning enables them to cope with a disability or with caring responsibilities. Some are serving custodial sentences. Nearly a fifth of students define themselves as suffering from a physical, mental or learning disability. This compares with 7% of students studying full or part-time for a first degree in mainstream universities who are receiving Disabled Students Allowance.

In the new academic strategy to be published in its 30th year, OCA will state its ambition to be at the forefront of developing and delivering accessible creative arts education through distance learning for an evolving society. OCA aims to create a national, online creative arts community, and to prepare students for sustaining their creative practice once they graduate.

Wednesday 7 February, 2018

MacDonald Hotels are set to launch new leisure facilities in a range of its sites in part of a huge £2.5 million investment boost. The investment will go toward improving equipment and updating interiors in its resorts and hotels. 16 renovated leisure suites will be fitted with the latest technology allowing guests to experience their newly updated Vital Health and Wellbeing brand by the end of February.

MacDonald Hotels operates 53 hotels in the UK, Spain, Portugal and Ireland. The group employs 3,500 staff to look after its 4,000 hotel rooms and leisure facilities. In light of growing concern over the future of hospitality, MacDonald Hotels have announced their massive investment.

The group director of golf, leisure and spa, Keith Pickard, explains: “The multi-million-pound investment reaffirms our commitment to providing guests with the very best state-of-the-art fitness and spa facilities, building on our already high standards. We know just how important our modern gyms and unique spas are to our guests especially at a time of year when many are on a health kick following the festive season – and we are excited to continue to provide market leading facilities.”

The venture starts in the groups Falkirk Hotel, Macdonald Inchrya Hotel, and will finish at the Livingston hotel, Macdonald Houstoun House. The new suites will be connected to the internet to allow for video streaming and allowing guests to train independently or in groups. The new face of the Vital Health and Wellbeing brand is said to be making the most of the "January Effect". The new kit involves interactive SE3 cardio machines, IC6 Myride indoor cycle spinners and PowerMill Climbers.

The investment doesn't stop in their leisure facilities. Macdonald Hotels have been looking to improve on all aspects and have recently worked with Smart Hospitality Supplies to create bespoke Guest Room Folders. The personalised folders have been designed to fit in to the hotels current interior designs whilst being able to adapt in the instance of any future changes. The folders use natural matte colours with bold textures to fit in with the elegant branding of the group's resorts.

The news comes after the launch of Macdonald's new unique monthly promotions for the duration of 2018. The 'Macdonald Moments' campaign is being used as a way to celebrate the diversity of resorts within the groups portfolio and thank regular guests by offering experiences at attractive prices.

Macdonald Hotels have proven to be a leading group within the hotel and leisure sector and this move is a bold step towards showing that the industry has a bright future ahead. The group are demonstrating that investment and innovative thinking are what it will take to push ahead of the competition.

Artist Champions Recycling With prosthetic leg donation Bound For Africa

Wednesday 7 February, 2018

UK based artist, My Dog Sighs, has ben applying his unique concepts of using reclaimed objects and materials to an interesting medium. In collaboration with the Bristol based amputee charity, Legs4Africa, the artist from Hampshire has used a donated prosthetic leg as a canvas. The prosthetic leg, after internal customisation and re-adaption, was recently delivered to its new owner, Keyay Cassay, a 53 year old single mum of 2 children who runs her own shop in Gambia’s capital, Banjul.

“My Dog Sighs’s style is characterised by the combination of melancholic and often naive portraiture with the use of found materials.” - Quote from his website

“It’s exciting working with an artist who shares a similar view of wastage.” Says Tom Williams, Legs4Africa founder. “It’s intriguing to see how My Dog Sighs explores the impermanent nature of objects with perfectly serviceable prosthetic legs that are being disposed of in the UK every day. We wanted to challenge the preconception of what art is and the wasteful nature of society, with the repurposed items that are core to our charity, a prosthetic leg.”

Legs4Africa is always delighted to receive unused prosthetic legs (decorated or not) to be taken to subsaharan Africa to help the tens of thousands of amputees who lack the equipment and support to walk.

Their webpage explains to donors just how to get a prosthetic leg to them which will, in turn, be taken to Africa, readapted, and change someone’s life.

Amputee Charity Gives More Than Just prosthetic Legs

Wednesday 7 February, 2018

Though Legs4Africa, an amputee charity, usually delivers only prosthetic legs to Africa, they just made a delivery that made a difference to a young amputees life in a wholly different way.

Lamin lost his leg after a severe break playing the game he loves, football. Though Lamin can no longer play football himself he has found another way of being involved with his local team; He coaches.

During a previous trip to The Gambia Legs4Africa discovered that Lamin’s favourite footballer is Eden Hazad. Legs4Africa, impressed by Lamin’s attitude and commitment to his sport, contacted Chelsey Football Club and told them of the inspiring young football coach in The Gambia.

On Legs4Africa’s most recent visit they dropped in on Lamin with a very special gift donated by Chelsey Football Club; A team shirt signed by Eden Hazad himself. Needless to say, Lamin was delighted.

Watch the video here

Though Legs4Africa’s primary objective is to help amputees be able to walk in subsaharan Africa, it also recognises that support for amputees needs to go beyond simply providing a prosthetic leg. Gestures such as this are a way of Legs4Africa recognising just how inspirational so many of it’s prosthetic leg users are.

“In countries such as The Gambia,” Says Tom Williams of Legs4Africa, “There is very little support for amputees either practically or emotionally. We’re working to change that with such initiatives as The Gambian Amputee Association which we set up to be run by amputees for the benefit of amputees. We hope that the signed shirt inspires Lamin to go further and someday achieve his dream of coaching his national team.”

Thanks to the kind donations of used prosthetic legs from amputees in the UK and the gift from Chelsey Football Club, Lamin can walk tall wearing his new shirt.

Legs4Africa undertakes ethical recycling to enable amputees in Africa to walk. The charity relies on donations and welcomes any used prosthetic legs no matter the condition.

EarDial show their support for the British Tinnitus Association

Thursday 8 February, 2018

8 February 2018 – EarDial, manufacturers of invisible smart earplugs for live music, have pledged their support of the British Tinnitus Association (BTA) by becoming a Corporate Member of the charity, helping to raise awareness of tinnitus and to support the BTA’s services helping those affected by the condition.

The BTA is the only national UK charity solely dedicated to those with tinnitus - a term that describes the sensation of hearing a noise in the absence of an external sound. For the last 35 years the charity has supported the one in ten people in the UK who experience tinnitus and in particular the 10% of those with tinnitus who find it severely affects their quality of life.

Jesús Carrera, EarDial Founder commented: “I'm proud to support the BTA, and I look forward to starting working together.”

Helen Goldsby-West, Head of Major Giving for the British Tinnitus Association, said: “Last year, the BTA supported over 335,000 people. To do this, we are reliant upon the generous donations of our fundraisers and supporters, and contributions from Corporate Members like Hidden Hearing. We receive no government support and need to raise over £500,000 this year to continue our much needed work. The Corporate Membership scheme is a great way for organisations to demonstrate their commitment to our work and the wider tinnitus community. We are extremely grateful to EarDial for their backing in our endeavours.”

Jesús added: “Our company has been interested in partnering with the BTA since we successfully crowdfunded EarDial, the invisible smart earplugs for live music. We wanted to support other organisations in a mission against tinnitus with a percentage of our profits, and now after a year after our successful launch we are starting to distribute that budget. Since we are based in the UK, the BTA was the top option for us and our first charity to work with, so we are very excited!”

About tinnitus

Not an illness or disease, tinnitus is a term that describes the sensation of hearing a noise in the absence of an external sound. The noise can have virtually any quality. Ringing, whistling, and buzzing are common, but more complex sounds may also be reported. Troublesome tinnitus can be very distressing for the affected individual, and issues may arise with sleep, concentration and mood. However, in many cases, subtle changes in people’s environment can address these issues, and improve quality of life.

Optional luminescent sticker to find in the dark included.Companion mobile app: Know the sound level around you, and how long you can stay safely.

EarDial is perfect for music-lovers, party-goers, DJs, musicians (playing guitar, bass, drums, singers, etc.), bartenders, bouncers, and anyone that wants to hear clearly and safely in a loud music event, like concerts, studios, nightclubs and festivals. It’s also perfect for other loud social events, like sport events, or cinemas.
