Feeling at home in St Ives

0
0
Thursday 26 April, 2018

It was a case
of ‘happy families’ all round as residents proudly moved into 20 new Coastline
Housing properties at Vounder Close in St Ives.

The new
development, close to St Ives Junior School, has provided 14 homes at an affordable
rent (around 80% of private rental levels) and 6 homes for shared ownership
(part-buy, part-rent).

It was made
possible thanks to funding of £246,200 from Homes England.

Sara Hodges,
Development Manager at Coastline Housing, said: “The fact that St Ives is so
hugely attractive to the tourist industry means that many local people have
been forced to search for a home elsewhere, feeling that their own town offers
nothing but luxury flats or apartments for holiday makers. We know these
properties will make a real difference to local people in need of a home of
their own in this town.”

The development
was declared officially open by local councillors Andrew Mitchell and Richard
Robinson, who had the honour of cutting the ribbon. The name of the Close was
selected by the Town Council, with ‘vounder’ being Cornish for ‘lane’.

Prior to the
housing development taking place, the land was previously owned by Bolitho
Estates.

Sara adds:
“These houses are in a beautiful spot on the rural fringe with some stunning
sea views and we know the new residents were extremely proud to take possession
of the keys to them. We hope they will be very happy here for many years to
come.”

Dragons'
Den success story, Barenaked Foods has launched two new pasta
products to add to their low carb, gluten free range suitable for weight management, coeliacs and vegetarians.

footsteps of the original Barenaked Noodles and Rice and are made

carbohydrates, sugar and calories.

Ross
Mendham, Managing Director at Barenaked Foods, says :

“Our
new Barenaked Spaghetti is a healthy, low-calorie alternative to
regular pasta. It's really easy to cook; you can just mix it with a
favourite sauce and it cooks quickly for a meal on the go. It also

lot more like eating classic pasta. Barenaked Protein Noodles are
enhanced with soy so they're a great way of introducing more protein
to your diet while keeping carbs and fat at bay. They're ideal for
people who lead a busy, active lifestyle and they also offer an extra
source of protein for vegetarians and vegans. We're delighted to
bring these brand new products to our range for customers to enjoy in
2018.”

Ross
and his wife Kelly are delighted to be expanding their business as a
family and are especially proud of their 4 year old son. At the time
of his appearance on BBC Dragons' Den in March 2013, Kelly had sadly
suffered a further miscarriage but not long after winning investment
from entrepreneur Peter Jones, the couple were delighted to welcome
Oliver-Jude into their lives. Ross includes Oliver in many aspects of

Digital Marketing Expert James Gaubert Releases all new Book "The A-Z of Digital Marketing"

Sunday 29 April, 2018

While many try to break into the ever-changing world of digital marketing, they do so at a huge disadvantage. An authority on the subject James Gaubert is doing his best to level the playing field with a breakthrough new book that is designed to inform all of the very many terms, acronyms and jargon used today.

April 29, 2018

There is no shortage of people who have the mistaken idea that becoming a success in digital marketing is easy and doesn't require, study, knowledge, and skill. Publisher of the popular marketing blog The Digital Diary, James Gaubert, certainly doesn't fall into that category, instead he insets a great deal of time and energy into helping people succeed in the digital marketing space. In exciting news, these efforts have now moved beyond his blog and other work, with the release of his new book “The A-Z of Digital Marketing: Buzzwords and Jargon to Turn You Into a Digital Unicorn” on Amazon.com. The much-anticipated work has been greeted eagerly.

“If you are trying hard at digital marketing, but you don't know the meaning of terms like SoLoMo, VTR, SERP, trendjacking, permalinks, CX, IRM, and DMP, you are potentially at an extreme disadvantage,” commented Gaubert. “My new book breaks all of this and much more down to help digital marketers establish a sound foundation and baseline to build off of. This is a great field, but it's highly competitive and if you want to do your best 'The A-Z of Digital Marketing' can be a big help.”

According to the author, the ultimate goal of his new book is to get readers caught up with the latest in digital marketing jargon, terms, acronyms, and other probably mysteries allowing them to communicate with the greater digital marketing world with a much greater sense of understanding and insight. The positive impact this kind of education can deliver is clear, especially when coming from a well-known authority on the subject, and at a very affordable price for either the Kindle or paperback edition of “The A-Z of Digital Marketing”.

Gaubert also continues to update his Digital Diary blog on a regular basis touching on topics like SEO, social media, PPC, innovation and much more.

Early feedback for the new book has been extremely positive.

Christine S., from Boston, recently said in a five-star review, “I have been an avid reader of Digital Diary so when James released his new book 'The A-Z of Digital Marketing' I ordered right away. Super impressive, helped me out in at least a few places where I was completely confused, and I know I will be turning back to it again and again as a reference in the future. Fully recommended.”

Modern Slavery - Persecution of Migrant Workers Under ‘Kafala’

Sunday 29 April, 2018

26 year old Indian national Gurwinder Singh from Punjab travelled to Saudi Arabia in December, 2015 to work as a Heavy Goods Driver at ‘Ayub Abdullah Al Zunedi in Zulfi’ Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

In the first three months of his employment, Gurwinder’s employer failed to pay his salary. Gurwinder’ confronted his employer Ayub Abdullah Al Zunedi in relation to the wilful refusal to pay the salary due to him. Gurwinder alleges that Ayub Abdullah Al Zunedi threatened to kill him for asking for his salary. This is part of the ‘Kafala’ system in action (note below under ‘Further reading’).

Gurwinder took his employer to the Labour Court to recover the overdue salary however, his employer refused to pay. Instead Ayub Abdullah Al Zunedi proceeded to make deductions from Gurwinder’s salary for alleged damage to the vehicle and continued to withhold his salary.

On the 9th of September, 2017 during the course of his employment and whilst driving his truck, Gurwinder’s truck was hit by a speeding car. The driver of the speeding car died on impact. Gurwinder maintains that he was driving at a speed of between 30-40 M.P.H and that the driver of the car was allegedly driving at a speed of between 160 and 180 M.P.H. This was backed up by the findings of the Police investigation into the collision.

The Police investigation disclosed that Gurwinder Singh was not insured to drive. Gurwinder claims that in Saudi Arabia it is the duty of the employer to insure the employees under the employment contract. Ayub Abdullah Al Zunedi refused to take responsibility; instead he made false accusations against Gurwinder and filed a malicious criminal complaint. The Saudi Police did not investigate Ayub Abdullah Al Zunedi for failing to provide Gurwinder Singh with insurance cover.

Gurwinder Singh was tried under Sharia Law and Ordered to pay 2 million and 44 thousand in Saudi Riyal in ‘blood money’ (that is Rs 42 Lakh (approximately £42,000 GB)) to the family of the deceased who have made it clear, that they will not accept anything less than the ‘blood money’ Ordered under Sharia Law. Unless this amount is paid to the satisfaction of the deceased’s family, Gurwinder Singh remains in prison custody.

Disappointingly, the Indian Embassy has failed to provide effective Consular excess and independent legal representation to Gurwinder Singh. He did not have legal represented before the Sharia Court and there were no submissions made on his behalf in relation to the facts that his ‘employer’ failed to insure him and that it was the deceased who caused the accident by driving at speed. It was the deceased who ploughed into the vehicle driven by Gurwinder Singh.

Gurwinder Singh in Saudia Arabia in 2018

Whilst in prison custody, Gurwinder Singh was ordered to remove his turban and his Kara (a steel bangle worn by Sikhs as part of their articles of faith and a manifestation of their identity) and his long hair was shorn off. Gurwinder Singh was informed that this was a requirement under Saudi prison rules. Whilst in prison custody, Gurwinder said that he and other non-Muslim prisoners are under pressure to convert to Islam by inmates and by Saudi officials working in the prison. All prisoners are served halal food which includes being served camel meat. The Sikh faith prohibits Sikhs eating halal food. Such religious sensitivities are ignored. This is a gross breach of the Human Rights of Sikhs and other minorities Imprisoned in Saudi Arabia. It is a violation of Gurwinder Singh’s right to practice his religion. Migrant workers appear to be deliberately targeted for discriminatory treatment and generally treated with indignation and with contempt. Persecution of minorities in Saudi Arabia is rife. These minority communities comprise mainly of migrant workers - in particular, migrant workers from South Asia. Crimes against them go unreported and unpunished.

Saudi Arabia was was appointed to head the UN’s Panel for Human Rights in September 2015.

GDPR Portal Offers 50% Promotional Discount for Charities

Monday 30 April, 2018

GDPR Portal, the cloud-based solution that provides small and medium-sized organisations with a cost-effective way to manage their compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), is pleased to announce that it is offering significantly reduced pricing for UK-based registered charities.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into effect on 25th May 2018. Many charities, even if they have a theoretical understanding of the requirements of GDPR, may find it difficult to start the practical steps required for a successful GDPR compliance project.

Ben Grey, the Founder of GDPR Portal commented “We know that charities are concerned about the impact that GDPR will have on them. Not only do they have to document how personal data is processed. But also, and perhaps more importantly going forward they will struggle to effectively manage Subject Access Requests.”

Grey added “A high proportion of charities will really struggle with the burden imposed by GDPR and are at risk if they fail to respond to Subject Access Requests within the 30 day deadline. Many of them would like to use a solution such as GDPR Portal but they run on very tight budgets.”

To help them GDPR Portal is offering UK-based registered charities a 50% reduction in its standard pricing. An eligible organisation only needs to enter the promotion code CHARITY50 during the sign up process.

Grey said “There are many thousands of charities in the UK which do incredible work as well as many schools which are registered charities. And we think it’s important to do the right thing and help them manage the challenge of GDPR.”

Great Northumberland 2018 is 56 days of arts, culture and heritage events celebrating the county of Northumberland Opening on Saturday 7 July and closing on Saturday 1 September 2018

This summer, the great county of Northumberland will demonstrate why it’s one of a kind when it serves up a summer of arts, culture and heritage to tempt visitors to enjoy and discover this unique and stunning corner of Northern England.

Great Northumberland 2018 is an eight-week extravaganza of events, exhibitions and activities starting from Saturday 7 July. Great Northumberland offers something for everyone, regardless of age, whether they’re families, art lovers, history buffs or they're simply looking to explore and find adventure.

Spurred on by the Great Exhibition of the North 2018, Northumberland County Council is bringing together, for the first time, a diverse range of summer activities under ‘Great Northumberland’, with a variety of the county’s best-loved visitor attractions playing host to events, including Lindisfarne Castle, Cragside, Vindolanda, Cherryburn and many more.

Cllr Peter Jackson, Leader of Northumberland County Council said: “With the spotlight firmly on our region this summer, we wanted to showcase what Northumberland has to offer, encouraging visitors and residents to explore our stunning county.

“Great Northumberland will celebrate our art, culture, heritage and innovation. Today we are unveiling our packed programme of free, family-friendly events for the first time and we want everyone to be part of it.

“It’s a really exciting time to be in Northumberland both as a resident and a visitor, with things such as the North of Tyne Devolution Deal and the Borderlands Growth Initiative bringing about great change.

“Great Northumberland gives us another reason to shout about what makes our county so special.”

Great Northumberland 2018 will be launched in Hexham on Saturday 7 July with a truly exciting opening show produced by Billie Klinger of Walk the Plank - one of the leading arts companies in the world, renowned for their spectacular showcase events. In and around the Abbey gardens the first event of Great Northumberland will feature street theatre (including the world-renowned SPARK! LED drummers) music, comedy and a main stage, from where representatives of all the participating venues will introduce their own contributions to the summer's activities.

The aim of Great Northumberland 2018 is to showcase the county’s rich heritage, unique traditions and fabulous landscape, while also demonstrating its forward-thinking approach to environmental innovation and digital technology.

Enjoy a new immersive experience by Anya Gallaccio at Lindisfarne Castle, join in with Carnival Capers at Seaton Delaval Hall, reach for the stars at the North Pennines Observatory and take an enchanting journey through the world of toys at the Bailiffgate Museum in Alnwick.

Watch out for a new exhibition at the National Trust's Cragside property near Rothbury, exploring the role of women in the industrial workplace focusing particularly on STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) industries, and a celebration of 50 years of the National Trust at Wallington.

Expect new art exhibitions at Woodhorn Museum to celebrate the much-loved Ashington Group, famously nicknamed the Pitmen Painters, plus a new display of landscapes by Mark Fairnington at the National Trust's Cherryburn property near Stocksfield, the birthplace of printmaker Thomas Bewick.

Look out, too, for a solo exhibition showcasing the work of Chinese artist and master craftsman Qi Yafeng at Cheeseburn Sculpture near Stamfordham. Meanwhile, an exhibition of the work of South Korean sculptor Joo-Hee Yang will be staged to mark the end of her residency with Visual Arts in Rural Communities, based in High Green, Tarset in the Northumberland National Park.

At the coast, the port town of Blyth will mark 200 years since one of the town's most extraordinary sons, Captain William Smith, became the first person to discover land in Antarctica. Visitors will be able to view an installation of over 600 blue sailcloth flags made by local people to illustrate his journey of discovery. Using exciting cyanotype photo-reactive printmaking techniques, the installation will create a flurry of colour and movement.

Cllr Cath Homer, Cabinet member for Culture, Arts, Tourism and Leisure said: “Great Northumberland is an exciting mix of heritage events, new exhibitions and commissions and live performances covering all corners of the county.

“Northumberland is a place where everyone is welcome and where there truly is something for all. We want everyone to get involved and support Great Northumberland, so if you’re an event organiser, tourist attraction or venue we want to hear about your events this summer!

“Working together we can provide an unforgettable experience which not only instills a sense of pride in residents, but also encourages visitors to discover what makes Northumberland great.”

Great Northumberland 2018 will culminate with a celebration of the unique musical traditions and talent of Northumberland. On Saturday 1 September in Berwick-upon-Tweed a children’s choir and fanfare of trumpets outside the Guildhall will herald the start of a concert that showcases the newly-commissioned song suite the ‘Great Song of the North’, alongside a performance from locally-based mezzo soprano Tamsin Davidson, contemporary settings of familiar Northumbrian songs and an introduction to the Northumbrian pipes.

Northumberland County Council hopes Great Northumberland 2018 will put the county on the national stage, encouraging visitors to take longer stays in the region, and has come up with six slogans to convey its message:

* EXPLORE NORTHUMBERLAND

* EXPERIENCE NORTHUMBERLAND

* ENJOY NORTHUMBERLAND

* DISCOVER NORTHUMBERLAND

* REIMAGINE NORTHUMBERLAND

* LOVE NORTHUMBERLAND

Dad completes huge fundraising challenge and raises over £5,600 for charity

0

Monday 30 April, 2018

The father of a baby girl who was born at just 27 weeks has completed an enormous sponsored cycling challenge to thank The Sick Children’s Trust, Bliss and Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust for their support whilst his daughter was receiving lifesaving treatment in hospital, 60 miles from home.

Chris Penfold, 37, has raised £5,610 for three charities close to his heart by running and cycling the same route his premature daughter travelled in order to receive the lifesaving care she needed.

Dad Chris, from Chelmsford, was terrified when his wife, Laura, 32, went into labour 13 weeks early at home on 28 December 2016. Less than two hours later their daughter, Willow, was born at Broomfield Hospital weighing only 2lb 10oz. She was placed in a plastic bag to keep her temperature high and rushed to the special care baby unit (SCBU). Struggling for every breath, doctors made the decision to intubate tiny Willow and place her in an incubator before she was transferred 60 miles away to The Rosie Hospital in Cambridge for lifesaving treatment on the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). It was at this point that The Sick Children’s Trust stepped in and offered the traumatised parents free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation at Chestnut House, located just moments from where Willow was receiving lifesaving treatment on NICU. Dad, Chris, who raised £2,244 for The Sick Children’s Trust, says:

“When we arrived at The Rosie Hospital the doctors told us it was likely that Willow was going to have to stay in hospital until her due date, which was three months away. Without The Sick Children’s Trust I don’t know what we would have done, especially as our son Finley was so young and needed to be with his mum and dad. The Sick Children’s Trust provided the three of us with a room in Chestnut House, but it was so much more than that.

“One of the reasons I decided take on Willow’s journey on 31 March is because that was her due date. It is a significate date for us and one that is tinged with sadness. I wanted to make it into a positive occasion and one that marked a huge success rather than the sense of failure associated with not having ‘made it’ to that date. I wanted to thank the charities, like The Sick Children’s Trust, who made our lives bearable and offered us both emotional and practical support. We had no idea such a charity existed before Willow was born. Now, having been supported by The Sick Children’s Trust, I know exactly how important the charity is to families with a seriously ill child in hospital.”

To say thank you to the charity for its help, Chris ran and cycled the route that Willow travelled in her first few weeks of life, from the moment Laura’s waters broke, her delivery at Broomfield Hospital and then on to The Rosie Hospital in Cambridge where her specialist care began. He continues:

“My wife Laura and I have been fundraising since Willow was discharged because we want to give something back to the charities that gave so much to us. We have held bake sales and taken part in The Sick Children’s Trust’s annual Big Chocolate Tea campaign, but this latest fundraising event has by far been the most demanding!

“The first leg of the challenge was a run from our home to Broomfield Hospital, which took me 1 hour 41 minutes, then it was a cycle on to The Rosie Hospital, which took 2 hours 25 minutes. I had said that if I exceeded my fundraising target I would double the challenge and cycle back to Broomfield before running home. I raised 154% of my target and so that was decided! It took me 2 hours 31 minutes to cycle back to Broomfield Hospital and then a further 2 hours and 6 minutes to run back home. The whole challenge was 116 miles long and took me 8 hours and 44 minutes! I was absolutely exhausted when I got home, but Finley ran the last 100 metres home with me as a surprise. Thinking of Willow’s tiny, fragile body when she was born, and everything she had done to survive, kept me going.”

The Sick Children’s Trust runs ten ‘Homes from Home’ across the country supporting families with seriously ill children in hospital. The charity relies entirely on voluntary donations and although the accommodation is free for families it costs the charity £30 to support a family for a night in one of its houses. Abi Abdel-aal, Chestnut House Manager, says:

“It is terrifying for any parent when they have a seriously ill child in hospital and as a charity we hope to help as many families as possible during such difficult times. The Sick Children’s Trust relies entirely on voluntary donations so it means everything to us when families we have supported go on to fundraise for us.

“The photos from Chris’ challenge are fantastic and show just how far he pushed himself to raise money. We can’t thank him enough. His donation raised enough to provide 75 nights of accommodation in a ‘Home from Home’. The fact that he and Laura continue to fundraise for us and hold bake sales means so much.”

Cashfloat Tackles Financial Fraud by Exposing Loan Scammers in New Fraud Prevention Centre

Tuesday 1 May, 2018

Cashfloat launches fraud prevention centre to help UK citizens avoid losing money to loan scams.

The ONS (Office of National Statistics) found fraud to be the most common crime in England and WalesThe Annual Fraud Indicator reports that the UK loses £190bn annually to fraudAction Fraud received 4,700 reports of loan fee scams in 2017

Western Circle Limited, trading as Cashfloat.co.uk, is a London-based online payday lender who has seen too many unsuspecting UK citizens lose money to loan scammers. Deciding to take action, Cashfloat has launched a fraud prevention centre to identify and expose scams and frauds within the consumer credit market.

The goal of this project is to uncover and raise awareness of as many of these loan scams as possible, providing a valuable service to the community.

“Our team have done a really great job on this project,” says Jeremy Lloyd, CEO. “We’ve called up some of these scammers pretending to be interested in their loan offers – you can hear the recordings of these calls here. It's ridiculous how many loan fee scams there are nowadays. We're just doing our part to protect UK citizens from them.”

The fraud prevention page displays a large collection of known scams, alerting potential victims to their existence. This is especially important for scams consisting of fraudulent websites that are almost identical to the authentic site - cloned websites. Customers of the company may mistakenly access the fake website, and unless they know to look out for the minute differences, many are tricked into giving their hard-earned cash to the scammers.

To prevent this from occurring, Cashfloat recommend checking their dedicated page before applying for any loans. There is also an email subscription service where users can sign up to receive email alerts about new loan scams. If someone identifies or suspects a fraud, Cashfloat urge them to use their quick reporting feature to prevents others from falling for it.

Visit the new Cashfloat fraud prevention centre for more information.

Brought to you by NEO 1st DEV Competition's Award of Merit winning developers and management team of Gagapay.com - Gagapay Network will be a first of its kind smart marketing platform built on the NEO blockchain.

A powerful tool for small to large companies Gagapay Network aims to build a secure and self-executing smart contract-powered Saas (Software-as-a-Service) for creating, managing and tracking smart marketing programs. Furthermore it will connect businesses with the right affiliate marketers around the world via a targeted open marketplace. Thus, solving the need of high capital, expertise and labor costs for reaching and growing the right customer base in a short amount of time.

The All-in-One Smart Marketing Platform

Combining affiliate, referral, network marketing, loyalty and bounty programs any business will be able to create a custom marketing strategy to reach the best results all with a single annual membership-based account. The platform will also be a useful tool for individuals and affiliate marketing professionals as it will allow them to promote different marketing campaigns to their existing network. The open marketplace will then connect public marketing campaigns with affiliate marketers via targeted offers that will appear for the chosen marketer audience.

Solving the problem of trust issue between businesses and affiliate marketers – smart contracts will automate the distribution of rewards according to network hierarchy as well as record new referrals according to the hierarchy tree stored on the blockchain.

The Best of Both Worlds

Gagapay Network is targeting both blockchain and non-blockchain businesses. Moreover, with a low-cost annual membership the platform will also be accessible to startup and SME's budgets who usually prioritize traditional marketing channels over smart marketing programs due to limited resources. What is more businesses operating with cryptocurrencies will be able to easily store, exchange and spend their crypto via a seamlessly integrated payment platform – Gagapay.com. This will allow to transfer crypto to Gagapay wallets, exchange and spend via mobile payments and prepaid cards - thus, bringing the crypto world closer to the daily life of the modern crypto user.

Gagapay.com, managed and developed by the same team, will be launched already in Q3 2018 with crypto prepaid cards ready for orders starting from D-1. This collaboration is already celebrated by Gagapay.com offering a FREE prepaid Mastercard or Union Pay card for all investors contributing over $500 worth of crypto to the token sale.

Launching an ICO Token Sale

The Gagapay Network token sale has already attracted more than 40K registered users on the portal in less than a month after launching the website and even before the Pre-ICO stage went live.

The platform will be fueled by its native utility token Gagapay Network Token (GTA). The GTA tokens sold during the token sale will be demanded by businesses and marketers for purchasing the platform's annual membership, unlocking extra platform features such as integrated ecommerce plugins. In addition token holders will enjoy reduced commission fees when paying in GTA.

At the moment the team is carefully selecting expert advisors and consultants in the fields of affiliate marketing, blockchain development, legal framework as well as business partnership growth for successfully launching the platform and expanding primarily to Asian and European markets.

The team is already working on signing partnerships with affiliate network companies and ecommerce businesses to successfully launch the platform with an already existing affiliate marketplace available.

The Crowdsale opens on 30th April and the ICO ends on 15th July or until all tokens sold.

Beanstalk reveals ‘Top 40’ children’s books for struggling and reluctant readers

0

Tuesday 1 May, 2018

Beanstalk – a literacy charity which recruits, trains and places volunteers in primary schools across England to provide one-to-one support to children who have fallen behind with reading – has revealed 40 children’s books that will be used by the charity’s volunteers to kick-start reading engagement for the children they support.

Beanstalk’s ‘Top 40’ has been handpicked by children’s literacy experts including Beanstalk staff, trained reading helpers and literacy consultant Marilyn Brocklehurst – founder of The Norfolk Children’s Book Centre. The selection process involved careful consideration of the types of books Beanstalk-supported children would find fun and motivational. The books will be provided to Beanstalk schools as part of a starter pack resource which will be used by the charity’s trained volunteers placed in that setting.

Beanstalk has been working in schools for over 40 years supporting thousands of children each year across the country who have fallen behind with reading. By bringing together the expertise of its long-standing reading helpers and highly respected literacy experts, Beanstalk has developed a resource which will ensure its network of reading helpers are well equipped from the outset to help more children than ever before.

Ginny Lunn, Chief Executive Officer of Beanstalk, said:

“As part of Beanstalk’s vision to help more children become confident and able readers we need to ensure that our volunteers have immediate access to age-appropriate and expertly chosen books as well as ongoing training and support to use those resources with children in the best possible ways. Up to now we have been so fortunate to have fantastic supplies of book boxes for volunteers to use, however, the introduction of Beanstalk’s starter packs will ensure that new volunteers are well equipped and have some brilliant resources to work on engaging the children from the very beginning – while they are still getting to know them. We also hope that by revealing Beanstalk’s ‘Top 40 ‘, it might help anyone looking for inspiration for a child they know - from parents to grandparents, reading helpers to teaching staff. And of course we will continue to develop and adapt this resource as the needs of our reading helpers and children changes, as well as encouraging volunteers to work with a variety of reading materials, as we always have done, including exploring local libraries and the school’s own library if they have one.”

Marilyn Brocklehurst, founder of the Norfolk Children’s Book Centre, said:

“We were very happy to work closely with Beanstalk to choose books for their starter packs and were so pleased with the final selection as they are all brilliant for children reading at all levels. They are great fun and a lot of the books are very original! We chose a mix of some classic books, such as Dear Zoo and more contemporary books, like Oi Frog! We, at the Norfolk Children’s Book Centre, are very happy to work with Beanstalk, the support that the children receive from Beanstalk reading helpers is exceptional.”

Beanstalk’s ‘Top 40’ has been organised into four age-appropriate sets of 10 books aimed at Lower Key Stage 1 (ages 5-6), Upper KS1 (ages 6-7) LKS1 (ages 7-8/9) and UKS2 (ages 9-11). All new schools that sign up with Beanstalk receive one starter pack of the 40 books. All volunteers that go through Beanstalk’s selection and training process from now on will have access to a full starter pack of 40 books when they begin in a school.

Thanks to the support of Marilyn Brocklehurst the relevant starter packs required by Beanstalk partner schools will be selected, boxed and distributed by the Norfolk Children’s Book Centre ready for newly-trained volunteers to use once they begin their one-to-one sessions with the children.

What the authors say…

Michael Rosen, author of The Laugh Out Loud Joke Book, said: “I can remember with great fondness the way my brother and I used to read out jokes to each other. It's a great way of enjoying what books can offer us. With this in mind I put together a joke book and I'm delighted that Beanstalk have put it in their starter pack. Enjoy!”

Philip Ardagh, author of Norman the Norman from Normandy, said: "Tom Morgan-Jones and I are DELIGHTED that Norman the Norman from Normandy has found his way into the Beanstalk starter packs, aren't we Tom? Tom's nodding as he's busily drawing Norman riding Truffle, the not-so-wild boar. Why are we so pleased. "Because Beanstalk is the best!" I was going to say that, Tom... *Mutters* Anyway, it's a fantastic scheme and we're all-three pleased to be a part of it. All four, if you count Truffle."

Pippa Goodhart, author of You Choose, said: “Of all the more than a hundred books I've written, You Choose is the one that I most often seen in crumpled, torn and drawn-on condition. That is wonderful because it reflects a book being used and used and used to bits by children! I was a child who loved listening to stories and playing stories, but I found reading very hard, and 'reading books' scary. In You Choose, the text is incidental to the main task of 'reading' the pictures, and so the pressure of a chunk of text that has to be read is removed. As they make their choices through the book, children become co-creators with the author and illustrator, rather than passive recipients of an already formed story. What they take from the book really is 'theirs', and that makes it both fun and empowering. My hope is that this is a book which helps less sure children make friends with books.”

Nick Sharratt, Illustrator for You Choose, Wriggle and Roar, Mixed Up Fairy Tales, The Big Book of Magical Mix Ups said: “As a huge admirer of Beanstalk and the vital work they do in primary schools, I'm truly delighted that not one but four of the books I've illustrated have been selected for inclusion for their starter packs, geared to help set children on the path to confident reading.”

Julia Donaldson, author of Wriggle and Roar!, said: "I have great admiration for the work that Beanstalk do and I am delighted that they have selected Wriggle and Roar for this brilliant new initiative"

Kes Gray, author of Oi Frog!, said: “Oi Beanstalk! Thank you so much for including Oi Frog in your reading scheme! I’ll trust you to get your seating arrangements right.”

Andy Stanton, author of You’re a Bad Man, Mr. Gum! Said: “I've been told many times that 'Mr Gum' has helped to get young readers started and it never fails to give me goosebumps - what a privilege it is to write for children. My stories might be silly, but I take writing and reading very seriously and am absolutely delighted to be included in Beanstalk's starter pack.”

Axel Scheffler author of Flip Flap Jungle, said: “It’s an honour and pleasure for me to know that Flip Flap Jungle will be introduced to so many children through Beanstalk’s great work in encouraging literacy and the joy of reading.”

Nosy Crow Books said: “We very much admire and value the work that Beanstalk does, so we are delighted that Nosy Crow books have been chosen for inclusion in their starter packs.”

Tuesday 1 May, 2018

In 1978 Rockabilly band Matchbox took to the stage in Bristol. The event was a huge success that thrilled the audience and launched a career that saw the band have a worldwide hit with 'Rockabilly Rebel'. Now the original 1978 line up are set to do it all again…

After that 1978 Bristol event and their hit with 'Rockabilly Rebel', Matchbox followed up with hits such as ‘Buzz Buzz A Diddle It’, 'When You Ask About Love', 'Midnight Dynamos' and 'Over The Rainbow'. The band sold over 5 Million records in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, and further afield.

Unlike a lot of bands from the 70s and 80s Matchbox still feature their original 1978 line-up, brim-full of excitement and great sounds. Most of all they offer a thrilling evening of true musical entertainment.

In 1978, a live recording was made of the band's Bristol performance, and they released 'LIVE – Rockin’ Bristol In 1978'. Now, forty years on from that life-changing event, the band are set to rock out the city again. Playing for one night only, at the Passenger Shed, on 29th September 2018, it is sure to be a night to remember! Once again, a live recording will be made and released on DVD and CD, as 'LIVE – Rockin’ Bristol In 2018; 40 Years On.' The evening is sure to be a great night, celebrating the band's unique style. An amazing atmosphere is guaranteed! Band members Graham, Steve, Gordon, Fred, and Jimmy, can’t wait to re-create the magic of that performance of 40 years ago, and share this special event with their fans, young and old. Matchbox are coming back to Bristol!

Background and further information

Originally formed in 1971 by Steve Bloomfield and Fred Poke, the band went through a few line-up changes, but by 1978 had settled into the Matchbox we still see today. Graham Fenton, lead vocalist, joined Steve and Fred in 1977 and in 1978, Jimmy Redhead and Gordon Scott were the final pieces of the puzzle, creating the unique line up that went on to have a string of hits. Since 1978 Matchbox have provided unforgettable nights of Rockabilly to a growing fan base who just love their music. Throughout the 80s the band captivated audiences across Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The band went their own separate ways during the late 80s and early 90s but eventually reformed in 1996, when Rockabilly underwent a rival. Since that time, Matchbox continue to excite audiences and haven’t looked back, touring the UK and Europe and performing to a growing fan base. Their fun style coupled with fantastic songs are completely infectious.

With its strong rhythms, combining country music and rhythm and blues, Rockabilly is considered by many to be the 'true' Rock and Roll. If you're a fan of Rockabilly, or perhaps a newcomer – you won't be disappointed by Matchbox's performance.

Matchbox promise a night full of unforgettable Rockabilly rhythms that are both captivating and exhilarating. 'Rockin’ Bristol In 2018' is going to be great night, celebrating the band's distinctive style and bringing Rockabilly to a new generation. What’s more, the audience can be part of the live recording to be released on film. Tickets available at https://www.rockabillynight.co.uk/

GigList Launches Equity Crowdfunding Campaign Having Raised 56% of £120k Target

Tuesday 1 May, 2018
First “big-data aggregation platform” for live music industry56% of fundraising raised so far via Seedrs – £750,000 valuation pre-moneyBig-data aggregation site already lists over 22k events through integrations

London, 1 May 2018 – GigList, the first big-data aggregation site for the live music industry, has launched an equity crowdfunding campaign via the Seedrs platform. Having already raised 56% of its £120k target, it is looking for those with a passion for live music to invest in its disruptive music tech platform, that seeks to place the experience of the fan at its core.

GigList has created a seemingly unique offering in the online live music discovery space, a dashboard that presents a holistic view of the events scene. Built upon multiple data integrations and an algorithm to present a user friendly and efficient view of the UK market, GigList has over 22,000 live UK events and gigs, and is growing rapidly.

With an ambitious growth plan, GigList is now looking for shareholders to invest in the next stages to support the business’ growth. From its UK starting point, it will look to expand into the US by late 2018. It will use the funds raised to further develop the platform to broaden its data reach and deepen the music data complexity it presents. It will also continue to develop its rich editorial section and further recruit writers to boost the existing editorial team, whilst retaining its core focus on user experience. Finally, GigList plans to build active partnerships in the industry to help bring the music fan closer to the content and artists they love. The UK live music sector is growing at the strongest rate of all leisure sectors, having grown by 45% in the 5 years to 2015, according to Mintel. Brits now spend in excess of £2 billion a year attending events.

James Eddleston, CEO and Co-founder of GigList, said: “GigList came about because of a realisation I’d had, which was that the old sources of reading about the newest musical artists and also finding out when and where they were playing, have all but died out. Drawing upon my experience in technology and big-data, I thought why not use that type of technology to build something comprehensive for the music fan. Plus, not constantly trying to barrage them with adverts or things to buy, just a really cool platform to discover events and artists, and read great content.”

You can visit the GigList crowdfunding page at www.seedrs.com/giglist or drop the team an email on contact@giglist.com for more information.

Local dad runs London Marathon and raises £1,100 for The Sick Children’s Trust

Wednesday 2 May, 2018

A grateful father whose daughter required lifesaving surgery when she was just ten months old took on the iconic Virgin Money London Marathon on 22 April to raise money for The Sick Children’s Trust – a charity which supports families with seriously ill children in hospital with free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation.

Tom Fowler, 46, from Brightlingsea, completed the 26.2 mile course in just 3 hours 29 minutes to thank the charity for giving him and his wife, Gemma, free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation in 2010 when their daughter, Violet, needed emergency treatment miles away from home.

At just ten months old, Violet became seriously ill with mastoiditis, an infection of the skull’s mastoid bone, located just behind the ear. The affected ear became raised and pushed forward, with visible and tender swelling. Violet was admitted to Colchester General Hospital and immediately given antibiotics in an attempt to overcome the infection. However, over the next two days, rather than improve, her condition deteriorated with the swelling causing pressure to build on her brain. The decision was made to transfer her to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for lifesaving treatment. She underwent a complicated operation to drain the middle ear and relieve the pressure that the fluid was exerting on her brain. Whilst she recovered on the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Addenbrooke’s Hospital Tom and Gemma, along with Violet’s older sister, Molly, were supported by The Sick Children’s Trust at Acorn House, free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation located just moments from where Violet was recuperating. Dad, Tom, who is a Deputy Manager of Residential and Extended Provision at Langham Oaks School, says:

“The ten days we spent at Addenbrooke’s Hospital were the scariest of our lives and having a room at Acorn House took away at least one stress that we were experiencing. It gave us both a place to catch up on sleep between taking it in turns to stay with our daughter. The house had a stock of basic food and toiletries and it also gave us a chance to speak to other parents in a similar, or often much worse, position. It was a little haven during a terrible time and words can’t describe what a comfort Acorn House was.

“I wanted to run a marathon for The Sick Children’s Trust to thank them for their support and give back a little bit of what they gave my family during our time of need. I have run marathons before, but this was the toughest yet because it was the hottest London Marathon on record and the opposite conditions to those I had trained in!

“Knowing what I was running for kept me going. It was amazing to be cheered on by Gemma and Violet at miles 12 and 21 – they really inspired me to keep running and complete the race, as did all my friends and family who’ve made such generous donations to The Sick Children’s Trust leading up to the race.”

As part of #TeamSCT this year, Tom was joined by 18 other runners who combined have so far raised £25,873 with donations still coming in. The Sick Children’s Trust runs ten ‘Homes from Home’ across the country, giving families with seriously ill children free accommodation just minutes from their child’s hospital bedside. The charity relies entirely on voluntary donations and it costs £30 to support a family for one night. This year’s marathon runners have raised enough to support a family for 862 nights with ‘Home from Home’ accommodation. Acorn House Manager, Abi Abdel-aal, says:

“Tom completed the London Marathon so quickly – we were all so impressed by his time and grateful to him for raising money for The Sick Children’s Trust years after we supported his family. It really is an indication of the long term impact the charity has on a family.

“His donation, along with the money raised by our other runners, will make a huge difference going forwards and help us to support more families, like his, who find themselves at a hospital, miles from home.”
