Scottish Wind Farm Work For FUGRO BKS

Tuesday 3 April, 2012
Specialist spatial data solutions provider Fugro-BKS Ltd, a key component of Fugro Renewable Services, recently completed an airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) survey of five onshore wind farm sites near Caithness in Scotland for RES and Baillie Windfarm Ltd. They have also completed a more conventional topographic survey of another site near Aberdeen, this time for the JNP Group working on behalf of RES.

Our recent airborne LiDAR assignment at Caithness presented lots of challenges, says Chris Boreland, Business Development Manager of Northern Ireland-based Fugro-BKS. The weather was particularly poor on four of the sites, and the fifth was adjacent to the Dounreay nuclear power station, necessitating special flight permissions to fly over the site. This survey, undertaken for an archaeological company (AOCArchaeology Ltd), was part of a major archaeological landscape survey in Caithness and is one of the most detailed landscape mapping exercises ever undertaken in Scotland. The results will be made available to the public through a dedicated website. In this instance the LiDAR survey recorded in detail the Baillie Hill landscape prior to the wind farm construction.

The survey was used to record the setting of one of the most important clusters of Neolithic funerary monuments in Caithness, at Cnoc Freiceadain, offering a unique view of the sites in their landscape context, he adds. Processing the data brought to light a large number of unrecorded features, greatly increasing the number of known hut circles in the area and redefining the extent of medieval and later settlement and agriculture. The data set therefore constitutes an invaluable research tool and an unparalleled means of preserving the landscape of twenty first century Caithness for future reference.

We have seen a marked increase in the use of airborne LiDAR surveys for wind farm developments, says Chris Boreland A major benefit of LiDAR mapping is the rapid collection of a high accuracy 3D terrain model of the survey area. In the case of Fugro-BKSs FLI-MAP system, a further benefit is the ability to measure ground height information underneath dense vegetation. The FLI-MAP system effectively sees through this vegetation, even if very dense, and can define the ground surface, rocks, mounds and tracks that are otherwise obscured and impossible to map by other means. It does this by distinguishing the first reflected light returns, which define the tops of trees, bushes, grass etc. from the final return which represents the ground surface.

Project developers and consultants are increasing their use of geospatial information, such as the terrain data derived from LiDAR, in a variety of ways. Prior to construction it can be used for wind speed analysis, vegetation cover, roughness, and clearance, view shed analysis, slope stability analysis, access road design, and for environmental and archaeological assessments. This information is an invaluable aid for turbine location selection and volumetric calculations for crane pad construction, as well as providing corridor mapping for network grid connection and substation location selection.

Fugro Offshore Wind has extensive, in-the-field experience, providing detailed analyses of the seabed and accurate assessments of year-round operational conditions for offshore wind farm sites.

UK and Japan commit to greater collaboration on space

Tuesday 10 April, 2012
Minister for Universities and Science David Willetts will today sign an agreement with the Japanese Economy Minister Motohisa Furukawa for greater collaboration on space research and technology, alongside identifying potential commercial opportunities.

One of the key areas for collaboration is on earth observation technology, such as the NovaSAR programme or the Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC) run by Surrey Satellite Technology Limited. In partnership with the UK Space Agency, DMC provided vital data to assist with rescue efforts and damage assessment in the aftermath of the Japan earthquake and tsunami.

Visiting Japan with the Prime Minister and a trade delegation, Minister for Universities and Science David Willetts will say:

The UK space industry is a true success story, employing tens of thousands of highly skilled people and contributing around £7.5 billion to economy annually. However space is a global market and the UKs success is dependent on international collaboration, so its vital we forge strong partnerships with countries like Japan that lead the way in technology.

Todays agreement paves the way for future space research and commercial cooperation between our two countries. This will drive growth by opening up opportunities for both the UKs innovative companies and leading researchers.

The UK already has a record of scientific collaboration with Japan on solar physics. This includes the most recent Japanese solar mission Hinode, on which one of the three science instruments is from the UK.

Todays agreement will help the UK reach ambitious targets to grow its share of the world space market to 10 per cent by 2030. It is part of the wider work by the UK to make satellite data more commercially available, led by the UK Space Agency working closely with International Space Innovation Centre at Harwell in Oxfordshire.

Could History Repeat Itself With A New PPI like Scandal?, Asks PPI Reclaims Company Simple Financial Solutions

$

Tuesday 10 April, 2012
The Financial Services Authority (FSA) has warned of a worrying new trend based on new payment protection products that could echo the PPI mis-selling scandal, says PPI reclaims company Simple Financial Solutions.

A number of companies have launched what appear to be payment protection insurance alternatives, such as short-term IP products, sparking fears that they may not be covered by any current guidelines. Companies venturing into this new area to plug the gaps left when lenders such as Lloyds pulled out of the traditional PPI market include Aviva and Nationwide.

Such is the concern over these new alternative products, earlier this month the FSA and Office of Fair Trading released a consultation paper on the alternative new products and have committed to monitoring the sale of them for irregularities.

In particular, four main concerns have been noted; the policies may not meet the customers needs; the pay-outs may not be enough; the potential beneficiaries of these products are not being properly identified by the companies that sell them; and the policies have been made too complex for comparison with similar products. All four concerns were previously noted in relation to the PPI products and the mis-selling scandal.

The paper said: The failings identified with PPI must not be repeated. Reflecting our increased focus on identifying potential consumer detriment at an earlier stage of a products life-cycle, we have published guidance for consultation (jointly with the Office of Fair Trading). This draft guidance sets out a number of risks to consumers, which may arise from the design of payment protection products and how firms may manage those risks.

Margaret Cole, Managing Director of FSA, said: We are aware that some firms have developed new forms of protection that aim to meet similar consumer needs to PPI. These may, however, pose similar risks to consumer and the previous failings identified with PPI must not be repeated.

However, the companies selling these products do not believe they bear any resemblance to traditional PPI products. An Aviva spokesperson said: Our short-term income protection product has built on the lessons learned from PPI mis-selling. We have been heavily engaged with the FSA during the development of their approach to regulating alternatives.

A Spokesperson for PPI Reclaim Company Simple Financial Solutions, said: Its understandable that people are concerned about the potential for mis-selling this new product, but realistically what company is going to attempt to get away with it now the market is in such a hyped up state about the PPI mis-selling scandal and current problems with PPI reclaims.

Payment protection is simply an insurance product which can be very useful under certain circumstances, but it has been vilified to such an extent that any company that tries to sell it legitimately or produce a similar product will find it is tainted by the same brush.

Payment protection isnt an evil product and never was - its just the selling practices surrounding it were. Its going to be an uphill struggle for any company entering this market.

Monday 16 April, 2012
The software industry, after consultation with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), is producing simple record keeping mobile apps for small businesses.

The apps, which are mostly free, complement existing HMRC record-keeping guidance and tools. They aim to help small businesses and the self-employed who are below the VAT threshold - £77,000 maintain good records and estimate what their tax liability might be.

David Gauke, Exchequer Secretary, said:

These apps help take forward our commitment to tax transparency in a very direct and practical way. They can help SMEs feel more confident about their record-keeping and provide a direct link to the businesss finances, freeing up time which can be better spent on the day-to-day running of the business.

Naomi Ferguson, Director Business Customer & Strategy, HMRC, said:

More and more small businesses use Smart phones as part of their business. These apps will provide the opportunity to keep track of records on the go, wherever business people are. Record-keeping is often an add-on to day-to-day running of small businesses and the apps will hopefully help to make it an integral part of the business.

We are really excited to see the arrival of the record-keeping mobile apps. The consultation with the software industry has been a positive process and has led to a number of high quality apps being available. We welcomed the opportunity to work with them to help customers with their record-keeping responsibilities and access our guidance.

HMRC worked with the Business Application Software Developer Association (BASDA) and independent developers to facilitate the development of the record-keeping apps.

The apps are part of an ongoing campaign beginning in 2012/13 to help small businesses with their record-keeping obligations.

Underscore launches Beavertown Brewery online and in store

Thursday 19 April, 2012
Beavertown Brewery launches online and in-Que

London branding agency Underscore are delighted to be working with London microbrewers Beavertown Brewery to launch their traditional yet maverick range of beers.

The brand is the brainchild of Logan Plant, musician and brewer extraordinaire, and Byron Knight, an expert in food and beverage from the USA. It takes its name from the old Cockney name for the site on which the brewery now stands: De Beauvoir Town. It’s an area with a rich history and heritage, and was famed across Victorian London for its ale houses, local breweries, rich characters and infinite revelry.

These were the key ingredients for the rock ’n roll Beavertown branding, created in close collaboration with the brewery’s founders. It features at its heart a burning sun, representing the founders’ creative energy, spiritual vision and ’a fire that could not be contained’. An Olde English typeface is used to complement and support a distressed, slightly Americanised typeface, a nod to the origins and future of the brand.

The brewery is housed and on show at Duke’s Brew and Que (33 Downham Road, De Beauvoir Town, Hackney, N1 5AA), where the brand will formally launch on Thursday April 19. Underscore has helped Byron and Logan prepare for the formal launch of the brand with collateral, packaging and PR.

Beavertown currently make three unique brews:
- The Smog Rocket is a smoked porter inspired by the Industrial Revolution and working class masses that made Britain great.
- The Eight Ball is a Rye IPA, packed full of rye with juicy American hops, lighter and better suited to multiple rounds.
- The Neck Oil is a session Best Bitter, with its origin firmly in Logan's Midlands roots.

All three of their brews will be on offer at the launch, accompanied by complementary dishes from Duke’s. Each carries its own bespoke label, lovingly crafted with as much care as the brews themselves, and offering a hint into the inspiration for and history of the brew within.

Further works to develop the brand and product range are continuing. The website is now live, showcasing the product range and telling the brand story. They are also active on social media, and will continue to work with Underscore to grow the brand ahead of a potential retail expansion later in the year.

Underscore Managing Director Neil Stanhope says, “Microbreweries are popping up all over London, especially in the east of the city where there is a rich heritage harking back to the Victorian era.

“We created the Beavertown brand to reflect the founders’ passion for this period in history, their personal heritage, the locality of the brewery and of course to support the character of the individual brews they have created.

“We are very excited to be launching and sharing this fantastic brand with Londoners and savvy brewing enthusiasts from all over the UK.”

End.

Carbonostics is contributing to the growth of the product LCA market in Europe, which independent analyst firm reports will more than double in growth hitting $103.3 million by 2015

Neuilly-sur-Seine, France (April 20, 2012) -- Carbonostics, the online product lifecycle assessment (pLCA) application for the food sector, participated in the latest report from independent analyst firm Verdantix, European Product LCA Market Forecast 2011-2015, published in March 2012.

The latest research from Verdantix reviews the barriers and drivers influencing the penetration of pLCA per industry to size, and forecast that the European market is set to reach $40.5 million in 2012 and more than double over the next three years hitting $103.3 million by 2015. The report takes into consideration software, implementation and support budgets while detailing spend in European countries including France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK. This research follows on from a previous report Smart Innovators: Product LCA Software that reviewed usage scenarios and solutions available on the market, which also included Carbonostics.

The research found that over the past three years, the choice of LCA tools on the market has increased with new entrants popularizing LCA. Furthermore, the report states that simplified interfaces designed for specific product categories or industries, such as food and beverage industry focused software Carbonostics, are supporting the uptake of LCA in new industries and for new usage scenarios by making LCA accessible to non-experts.

Carbonostics (cost + carbon + nutrition) was launched more than three years ago and continues to be a pioneering force in food product sustainability with its triple-bottom-line approach. It delivers product lifecycle assessment, hot-spot screening and product portfolio analysis via an online tool that includes a built-in, comprehensive database with over 2500 emission factors relevant to the food industry.

Carbonostics is driving the growth of product LCA applications and software in Europe and beyond by delivering a new approach to product sustainability and lifecycle assessment. Carbonostics is the fruit of our vision to build the bridge between science and practical world business needs in order to make LCA accessible to all companies in the food sector, whether big or small. Our goal is to equip all companies with accurate, intelligent, and actionable information with which to make strategic sustainability decisions, Bluehorse president Sara Pax explains.

We are proud that our commitment to bringing LCA to the business world is being recognized by the food industry as well as in this report, she adds.

The Carbonostics tool is used by large and small food manufacturers and foodservice suppliers in order to reduce carbon, cost and waste, identify supply chain efficiencies, improve supplier relationships and support new product design and R&D.

Verdantix industry analyst Emily Beauchamp says, In this report, we clearly see that the market for pLCA software provides an indication of the uptake of life cycle thinking in product development and supply chain management. This market evolution will lead new firms to adopt pLCA and encourage existing users to expand their use of this type of metric across their teams.

Insufficient Government support for UK manufacturers say British Made For Quality members

Monday 23 April, 2012
Nine out of 10 businesses belonging to the British Made For Quality (BMFQ) industry alliance believe that the Government is letting down the UKs smaller manufacturing companies.

A new survey shows considerable dissastisfaction with the Government among manufacturing businesses, with the overwhelming majority of BMFQ member companies
saying they did not believe those in the corridors of power either understood or supported British manufacturing industry.

In response to the question: Do you feel the Government is giving enough support to you as a manufacturer? a resounding 90% said No.

Eighty per cent were unsure whether their local Member of Parliament was on side or were even aware of manufacturing businesses concerns.

Under a third thought their MP supported manufacturing or showed any interest in the subject.

Banks did slightly better - although only 40% of respondents believed their banks were helpful. The majority of BMFQ companies said their banks were not interested.

Ninety per cent of the companies surveyed said they had neither received nor had the opportunity to apply for any Government grants.

Business optimism is still low among manufacturers. Half of the chief executives questioned said they would not be employing more staff in the coming year.
Commenting on the survey results, a BMFQ spokesman said: Our survey indicates that smaller manufacturing companies remain largely unsupported by current Government policy. It is clear that Ministers still believe that the City of London, the service sector and a handful of major international corporations will keep Britain afloat.

Time and again, our business contacts tell us Westminster and Whitehall simply do not grasp the importance of large numbers of small firms designing, manufacturing and exporting world wide. Such expansion is the only viable solution offering long-term employment prospects and a bedrock for innovation and strong economic growth.

In contrast, the Chinese Government activelysupports industrial expansion and economic growth.

We can all see the result. Is it too much to ask a British Government to be similarly driven? BMFQ has for ten years campaigned for a return to British rather than offshore manufacture, and the group continues to represent the opinion of an ever increasing number of smaller UK
manufacturers. BMFQ campaigns for a greater awareness of the needs of UK manufacturers.

AN APPLE A DAY WONT KEEP THE HAY FEVER AWAY...

Allergy UK reveals how having five a day can cause havoc for hay fever sufferers

If pollen wasnt making the nation miserable enough, Allergy UK reveals that eating fruit and veg can unwittingly cause problems for some hay fever sufferers.

New consumer research from the national medical charity reveals 40% of hay fever sufferers also react to one or more of nuts, fruit, vegetables or spices.

Pollen from trees and plants, especially birch, causes major problems for allergy sufferers in the UK. But the protein found in certain pollens is similar to that found in some foods putting hay fever sufferers at risk from another allergic condition, oral allergy syndrome.

Lindsey McManus, Allergy UK explains: 15 years ago oral allergy syndrome was considered unusual but now it is increasingly commonplace. The condition is caused by the proteins in some fruit, nuts, vegetables and spices triggering a cross-reaction in someone with hay fever. When they eat a food that shares similar proteins as the pollen, it can cause an allergic reaction, such as, an itchy mouth, swelling or tingling of lips and tongue.

With 15 million Brits suffering from seasonal allergic rhinitis or hay fever, the arrival of spring already signals months of misery. But a quarter of sufferers (24%) didnt even realise that foods could also trigger a reaction.

So while, according to the charity, 72% of those with hay fever suffer for more than two months, they could suffer from problems all year round because of a cross reaction with healthy foods. Furthermore, these foods can actually make hay fever symptoms worse.

Prisoners to Pollen
This National Allergy Week (23rd - 29th April) Allergy UK is highlighting the true impact hay fever has on the nation.

A worrying 15% of sufferers are so affected by their hay fever they are prisoners to pollen and dont like leaving their own house.

Nearly a quarter (23%) of adult hay fever sufferers say the condition makes them miserable. 38% find it difficult to sleep, 29% feel unable to concentrate, whereas one in five (20%) say it makes it hard for them to do their job.

Top Five UK Allergens
The research from Allergy UK also revealed more allergy sufferers react to pollen than anything else. But if you seek solace indoors, the home could inadvertently trigger an allergic reaction, with house dust mite being a top three allergen.

This National Allergy Week, the charity reveals the top five allergens affecting the nation:
1.Pollen
2.Food
3.House dust mite
4.Pets
5.Medication

Pets are a huge catalyst for allergic reactions, with 40% of those with allergies suffering as a result of our four legged friends. While it is commonly assumed it is the hair of the animal that causes a reaction it is actually the dander - particles of skin, saliva and urine invisible to the human eye. Cats are far more allergenic than dogs as their allergen is sticky so stays around for a long time, made worse by the fact they love to self groom. But pollen can also cause problems in the home as carpets can harbour pollen for up to three months.

According to the survey, medication is the number five allergen in the UK. Lindsey McManus, Allergy UK continues: Not all reactions experienced when taking medication are truly allergic; however there is growing concern at the increasing numbers of people who are suffering severe allergic reactions to prescribed and over the counter drugs.

Impact of Allergies
The impact on everyday life is evident; 46% of all allergy sufferers are constantly on their guard, saying they exercise extra caution when out and about. 40% choose not to go to places where they could come into contact with the allergen they react to and nearly half of all sufferers (46%) use medication regularly.

Allergy UK acts as the 'voice' of allergy sufferers, representing the views and needs of those affected by this multi organ disease. Allergy UK makes a difference through a dedicated helpline and network for sufferers. This National Allergy Week, Allergy UK is encouraging everyone to get involved to show their support. Fundraising events will be taking place throughout the week. After its success in the health insurance market, ActiveQuote has now launched a unique online comparison service for income protection.

Customers can choose whether they want to protect their income, mortgage or their loan repayments against accident, sickness or unemployment. ActiveQuote then searches all the leading UK insurers, including LV=, Aviva, Prudential and 15 others to find income protection quotes that suit the customers circumstances and budget.

ActiveQuote is the first comparison site to combine the comparison of short term income protection, otherwise known as ASU or PPI, with long term income protection which can pay out until retirement.

Once the search is complete, the ActiveQuote comparison technology allows each customer to tailor their quotes online.
