Friday 17 August, 2012
The Market Family has launched an integrated advertising campaign to raise awareness of Australia’s leading range of child sunshade products to UK mums and dads.

Outlook is the number one baby shades brand in Australia, marketed in the UK by leading nursery distributor Cheeky Rascals. The Market Family has been working with the company to develop the brand positioning and advertising campaign to support Outlook’s range of innovative car and pushchair shade products in the UK.

The ‘I can see...’ campaign showcases the benefits of Outlook through a child’s eyes, while at the same time giving mums and dads the information they need to make a buying decision. The campaign is running in glossy parenting and women’s magazines such as Vogue and Angels & Urchins.

Sue Benson, managing director at The Market Family said: “Our challenge was to balance engagement and emotion with the practical benefits of Outlook sunshades. We achieve this by delivering the story in two halves; telling a child’s experience of a product in their own language as well as concisely delivering its benefits to mum and dad.

“The creative is soft and contemporary to appeal to style-conscious mums who want to make the most of their time outdoors with their child.”

Jakki Axford at Cheeky Rascals said: “All Outlook products enable children to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine safely. The Market Family has brought this to life, enabling us to communicate the uniqueness of what we offer in a way that will engage parents.”

The Outlook campaign has met the Family Approval criteria, which ensures it will fully engage parents. This is a process The Market Family developed in partnership with parents and careers to help prequalify marketing communication. It includes principles that cover respect for the child, reasons to buy and understanding mum.

Critical Thinking Consultancy launches unique training programme for companies.

Companies looking to maximise their opportunities during difficult economic conditions need staff who can think critically, but the subject of critical thinking has been for too long kept within the school or university classroom. However, the skills that the subject provides are now available to companies, following the launch of an innovative training programme designed to challenge the way managers think in the workplace.

So what skills does critical thinking develop and reinforce? These include the following:
• an increased ability to evaluate the potential for business from existing and new customers;
• the analysis and evaluation of projects in greater detail;
• improved communication in terms of greater coherence and clarity;
• greater skills in negotiation;
• improved decision-making.

Dr Roy van den Brink-Budgen, founder of If…Then Critical Thinking, said ‘critical thinking requires us to think of the possible significance of statistical and other evidence, predictions, and recommendations, and to consider alternative explanations and approaches. It therefore fits very clearly with the needs of business by providing both an emphasis on rigorous thinking as well as requiring creative thinking. Decision-making based on critical thinking has to be better than that which is not.’

Tuesday 21 August, 2012
As part of a growing number of global organisations who are Lobbying for Life on a total ban on the use of asbestos, the National Asbestos Helpline are proud to lend its support as part of the campaign to support Action Mesothelioma Day which took place on 6th July 2012.

Aimed at highlighting the scale at which Mesothelioma affects many people, Action Mesothelioma Day, along with the National Asbestos Helpline, has been supported by various other international groups, such as the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organisation, to boost awareness of Mesothelioma. As part of the push for a total ban on asbestos use, the National Asbestos Helpline have launched an online petition for those who have been affected by asbestos can lend their support for this initiative.

General Manager of the National Asbestos Helpline, Richard Clarke, said: “We must ban the use of this material; the NAH sees daily the affects asbestos disease can have on people’s lives and for the diagnosed with rare asbestos-related cancer, Mesothelioma, the outcome in nearly always fatal. We are looking to reach over 1000 signatures, with photographs, of those who have used our services and who have obviously had their lives changed as a result of coming into contact with asbestos.”

This support will then be transferred into a book for presentation to Linda Reinstain, of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organisation in America; to represent the true face of the disease to present to those who profiteer from the production, exportation and use of asbestos.

Richard Clarke also added: “Action Mesothelioma Day is the ideal vehicle on which we can bring wider attention to the dangers of this material as well as remember those we have lost to asbestos related diseases and raise valuable funds for those living with an asbestos-related condition. Employees of the NAH will be observing a minute’s silence at 10am on Action Mesothelioma Day in memory of those globally who have lost their lives to the disease.”

Wednesday 22 August, 2012
Parcel2Go has reminded people visiting Britain to attend the upcoming 2012 Paralympic Games that they can send any purchases home with the help of a professional courier service .

About 4,200 athletes from more than 160 countries will take part in the sporting events, which begin on August 29 and run until September 9. More than 2.2 million tickets out of the available total of 2.5 million have already been sold, and organisers have said that if demand continues it will result in the first sell-out in the event's 52-year history.

Many of the spectators will be from overseas, and are expected to take the opportunity to do some serious shopping as part of their trip. Bolton-based Parcel2Go says these visitors could make the process of getting their purchases home much easier by securing the services of a leading courier company to handle the delivery.

"Getting goods home can be a real pain when you're overseas, and the chances are that visitors to Britain will want to concentrate on the Paralympic Games over the next few weeks, rather than have to worry about how they are going to get their presents and souvenirs home," said Richard Mercer, marketing director at Parcel2Go.

"Booking a courier through our site is simple and only takes a minute. Visitors can arrange to have their packages picked up and then shipped to a destination of their choice around the world with the minimum amount of fuss."

Courier services from the likes of FedEx, Parcelforce and City Link are all available through the Parcel2Go website, with each company offering a range of cost-effective international services and competitive postage rates.

Avoid the bank holiday rush with courier parcel delivery, says Parcel2Go

Friday 24 August, 2012
Parcel delivery specialist Parcel2Go has advised customers to make sure they organise shipping ahead of the bank holiday to avoid the expected rush.

Those that have parcels to send ahead of the upcoming three day weekend should get started on arranging their parcel deliveries as soon as possible; otherwise they may find that their parcels get caught up around the bank holiday, which lands on Monday 27th August this year. There is always a rush of deliveries around important annual holidays such as Easter and Christmas, but bank holidays can also cause some delivery disruptions.

However, as Richard Mercer of Parcel2Go has said: "At Parcel2Go we can provide customers with a comprehensive delivery service from some of the best courier companies in the world, so no matter where parcels need to be delivered to we can help. By using a courier service customers will be able to get their parcels there in time for the bank holiday, so there will be no risk of delayed deliveries."

Following the bank holiday there is likely to be a spike in the number of people ordering goods online due to the bank holiday sales, so using a courier company could assist in getting parcels through this increased shipping activity. Courier companies are able to assist customers with high speed delivery services and reasonable postage rates, along with handy delivery features such as parcel collection, parcel tracking and use of Parcel2Go's postcode finder .

Parcel2Go works with courier companies such as Yodel, Hermes, Parcelforce and TNT for UK deliveries, while those after international parcel delivery can choose from overseas couriers like FedEx, Parcel2Go Express and TNT Economy for overseas deliveries to locations such as Europe, the USA, Canada and Asia, as well as delivering to all other countries around the world.

Bowel cancer campaign gets celebrity backing

$

Tuesday 28 August, 2012
One in three people are embarrassed to talk to their doctor about poo even though having blood in poo is a key symptom of bowel cancer which can kill. Knowing the symptoms of bowel cancer and seeing a doctor early on can save lives according to the national bowel cancer campaign supported by TV personality Sharon Osbourne.

The ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ bowel cancer campaign encourages people who have had blood in their poo or looser poo for three weeks or more to see their doctor. The adverts aim to make people aware of the symptoms of bowel cancer and make it easier for them to discuss this with their GP.

Care Services Minister Paul Burstow said:

“No one likes thinking about cancer, or talking about their poo. But the plain fact is no one dies of embarrassment, they can die of cancer if they don’t get an early diagnosis. If you show any of the key symptoms, tell your GP. It could save your life.”

“Early diagnosis makes a huge difference to your chance of survival. Thats why we are building on the success of our recent national campaign which led to more people getting checked out by their GP.”

Sharon Osbourne, who had bowel cancer and is backing the campaign said:

“For goodness’ sake…we’ve all got a bum and we all poo, so get over it! The sooner bowel cancer is caught, the more likely the chance of survival. That is why everyone needs to just look out for the symptoms and head straight to the doctor if you are worried about anything. Early detection could save your life!”

Other findings from the Department of Health survey conducted by TNS which questioned 1052 people showed:

74 per cent of people are unaware that as much as one third of the population inEnglandwill get cancer in a lifetime;
Only 15 per cent of people are aware that 34,000 people get bowel cancer each year inEngland

Bowel cancer isEngland’s third most common cancer and causes 13,200 deaths a year. The majority of people diagnosed with the disease are over the age of 55. However, bowel cancer is more treatable if spotted and diagnosed early. Over 93 per cent of people diagnosed with bowel cancer at an early stage survive for at least five years compared with less than 7% of those diagnosed at a late stage. IfEngland’s bowel cancer survival rates matched the best inEuropean additional 1,700 lives could be saved every year.

Dr Harpal Kumar, Cancer ResearchUK’s chief executive, said:

“Detecting bowel tumours early, before they’ve had a chance to spread, can significantly stack the odds in the patient’s favour. If people respond to this campaign – and take up bowel screening when invited to do so – we have a chance of pushing bowel cancer well down the league table of killers. We urge people to overcome their fear. For most, any symptoms will turn out to be nothing to worry about. But for those people with cancer, the earlier they go to their doctor, the more likely they are to survive.”

Deborah Alsina, CEO, Bowel CancerUKand Mark Flannagan, CEO, Beating Bowel Cancer said:

“We are delighted the Government will again be running their Be Clear on Cancer bowel campaign. Awareness of the disease remains stubbornly low and too many people are leaving it too late to visit their GPs when they have signs of cancer. As a result, bowel cancer remains the second biggest cancer killer with thousands of avoidable deaths each year so it is essential that we keep reminding people of the key messages about symptoms and the importance of going to your GP if you have any concerns.

Bowel cancer is very treatable, especially if diagnosed early, so we need to ensure that these potentially life-saving messages are both heard, understood and acted upon. ”

The ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign was piloted in the South West and East of England in January 2011. In those areas, GPs saw the number of people over the age of 50 presenting with the relevant symptoms increase by 48 per cent – about one extra patient per practice per week. Early analysis of the national campaign this year showed that there has already been a 30 per cent increase in patients over 50 reporting key campaign-related symptoms across 340 GP practices.

The adverts will appear on TV and radio inEnglandfor five weeks from today (Tuesday 28 August) until the end of September and over 100 face-to-face events will take place around the country.

Notes to editors

1. For further information please contact the Department of Health on 0207 2105436

2. Figures on increase on numbers of patients visiting GPs came from an interim analysis of the national campaign launched in January to March 2012. A full report is expected at the end of September.

3. Results from the pilots came from evaluation of the Bowel Cancer Awareness Pilot

4. The Department of Health conducted a survey with TNS from the 16th August 2012 – 20th August 2012. The survey was conducted online amongst adults inEngland. 1052 people were surveyed, and results were weighted to be nationally representative.

5. Questions from the survey:

On a scale of very embarrassed to not embarrassed at all, how do you feel about speaking to your GP about poo?

What proportion of people inEngland do you think get cancer in a lifetime?

How many people in England get bowel cancer a year?

Record Breaking Performance Put In By Conservatory Outlet Salesman

Wednesday 29 August, 2012
In line with Team GB’s heroics at the Olympics, Clearview Home Improvements salesman John Newton has pulled off a Gold Medal performance and recorded an all-time best to secure the monthly title of Conservatory Outlet ‘Top Dog’ for July.

John, who is based at Clearview’s Warrington depot, was the clear winner after he achieved the largest number of combined conservatories, double glazing windows and doors sales in the history of the competition. Clearview colleague, Nick Ransley was runner-up in the competition with a grand total of sales that would normally seal the win.

The impressive performances put in by both John and Nick coincide with a recent sales training course they attended, together with other network members, hosted by esteemed sales professional Paul Clifton, and is testament to the way in which they and others embraced the course and applied the sales techniques learnt.

Clive Brimmell of Housemaster Home Improvements, and Richard Holloway of Premier Windows & Conservatories also deserve honourable mentions after emphatically winning the categories of ‘Largest Conservatory Order’ and ‘Largest Window Order’ respectively.

Another Clearview man, Mark Flinn, who works from their Leyland showroom, continues to make Nick Trigg’s life hard at the top of the overall Window Sales League Table after triumphing in the monthly category of Top Window Salesman.
As we inch ever closer to the conclusion of the competition, Jim Oliver of James Oliver Conservatories still remains the man to beat, holding a healthy lead over his nearest rival and July’s Top Dog, John Newton.

Nick Trigg of Mid Wales Windows also holds all the cards going into the final few months of the annual Window Sales contest.

GGF Helps BBC Resolve Warranties Issue

Wednesday 29 August, 2012
The producer of the BBC TV programme “Rip Off Britain” recently contacted the GGF following an investigation into a GGF Member’s conduct/policy on transferable warranties.

The programme’s producers were concerned that a GGF Conservatories Member was not offering transferable warranties on windows, meaning a consumer buying a property with new windows fitted would not have any warranty on the glazing. Not only would this be a negative for potential homeowners and property sellers, but it also contravenes the GGF Rules.

On hearing of this case, the Federation immediately contacted the Member under investigation and informed them of the breach of the Rules and of the BBC investigation.

Since the GGF’s actions the Member has now changed their warranties back to transferable guarantees to meet GGF Member requirements and have stated they will also change those warranties already issued from non-transferable warranties to transferable warranties.

The GGF also informed the show’s producers of the action taken and confirmed the requirements for conservatory suppliers to provide transferable warranties as per the GGF Rules.

The Federation also mentioned to the BBC that it would run an article in its monthly exclusive Members online magazine to fully explain and remind Members of the requirement for transferable warranties to avoid any future conservatory complaints.

Following the BBC’s contact, the GGF will be reviewing and updating its Model Terms and Conditions to cover transferable guarantees and ensure Members are fully equipped to offer consumers the best possible warranties.

Nigel Rees, GGF Group Chief Executive commented, “We are always happy to help with media enquiries and on this occasion, the issue raised showed the benefit of using a GGF Member company. From this case, homeowners can be assured that their warranties are valid when buying or selling a property if they have been supplied and fitted by a GGF Member.”

This latest enquiry from the BBC comes after an earlier enquiry in March from the researchers of “Rip Off Britain” regarding transferable warranties. The BBC producers were pleased with the outcome and it will be included in the programme.

James Lee, GGF Marketing and Communications Manager added, “Being available to help with programmes such as “Rip Off Britain” reinforces our strong working relationship with the BBC. Last year we offered advice on BBC Radio 2 and Radio 4 programmes and earlier this year, we featured on three episodes of BBC’s “Don’t Get Done Get Dom” TV programme. We will always try to be open and accessible to the media, to defend and promote our Members as the best companies in the industry.”

The new series of “Rip Off Britain” is due to start in September, details of the programme featuring the GGF and transferable warranties, will be announced once the full schedule has been released in early September.

Toughrack Produces Dust Proof Servers with Additional Filter

Wednesday 29 August, 2012
Ensuring that the delicate hardware involved in large or small server systems isn’t compromised or damaged by the conditions in which they are kept can be a difficult and tricky task. Without the proper equipment, protecting your equipment and expensive technology from dust, debris, overheating or overcrowding can be nearly impossible.

However, as the demand for more intricate and elaborate protective equipment for servers, cables and other communication devices increases, so too do the number of elegant design solutions to the problems faced. A prime example of this is the new Toughrack dust proof server cabinets and the ingenious way in which they protect equipment from the accumulation of dust and dirt.

As floor space becomes more and more expensive, there is a greater need for cabinets and racks that maximise the amount of hardware that can be placed in a smaller and smaller capacity. However, this raises its own problems and issues, including cleaning and maintaining hardware that is packed tightly together, without disrupting or damaging the technology.

Prevent Dust Build-Up

The most efficient solution to such a problem is preventative. Rather than trying to remove dust and dirt once it has settled and affected hardware, more and more companies are using dust proof cabinets to ensure that dirt and dust aren’t able to reach the equipment in the first place.

With this in mind, Toughrack have produced a cleverly designed new dust filtered server cabinet . This not only prevents the accumulation of dust on equipment, but also allows proper circulation throughout the cabinet, reducing concerns with overheating.

Overheating

As overheating is considered one of the most damaging problems in modern data centres and network systems, ensuring that cabinets have built-in mechanisms that allow for proper air flow has become a top priority. A poorly ventilated and controlled air flow system can cause a number of problems with equipment that can reduce performance levels and cause lasting damage to expensive hardware.

As such, Toughrack have ensured that their design incorporates elements that guarantee cooling systems are not compromised. As is expected of a company with Toughrack’s reputation, the design of the cabinet meets the requirements of a demanding industry, in which technology is constantly evolving and rapidly advancing.

This includes the ability to create bespoke and tailored racks and cabinets that meet the exact specifications of customers who require a slightly altered product. The server racks are available in a variety of sizes, depending on the spatial requirements of users and include a variety of features that ensure their application is both efficient and easy. This includes front and back quick release doors that provide easy access to hardware.

It is of the utmost importance that hardware is protected and insulated from those elements that may otherwise harm and damage the equipment or impair the performance of the technology. This is the case no matter how large or small the numbers of servers in use are.

With the introduction of Toughrack’s new dust proof cabinet, the company has ensured that businesses using such technology are able to employ clever storage solutions that not only maximise space, but also protect. With a full range of products, including noise reducing cabinets, Toughrack are able to provide server storage that meets the requirements of a huge number of businesses.

If you are interested in a dust-proof server rack, then simply get in touch with Toughrack .
Soon there will be an option to buy via the online shop and also more information on the site itself about this new product.

The shop, which was ran by Barry and Margaret Walters, won the accolade after scoring top marks in the award for outdoor caterers, which means the couple are entitled to a free pitch at next year’s Reading Festival.

The pair impressed the Council’s consumer protection team, which inspects food outlets at the Reading Festival and offers them a Food Hygiene rating, after scoring top marks in food safety.

To decide which trader wins a gold, silver or bronze award, the Council’s Consumer Protection team put 14 of the five rated traders which are considered to maintain the standards throughout the festival, forward to Festival Republic – organisers of Reading Festival.

Festival Republic judge other criteria include gas safety, noise at work compliance, management and also carry out an ecology assessment - which includes how staff travel to and from the festival, using eco-friendly or biodegradable cleaning products, and how they recycle waste.

The silver award this year went to David Biddy’s Pizza shop, who is now entitled to a 20% discount off their pitch for next year’s festival.

Five other outlets were awarded bronze status, which entitles them to preferential locations for Reading Festival 2012. They were Adam Banks & Carla Thetford’s Halloumi & Chorizo van from Essex, Tom Pinyopat’s Chinese food from Leicester, Elliot Burden chicken wraps from Surrey, Teresa Seevanasen Asian food stall from Middlesex and Alistair Hantler coffee and cakes from Bristol

Reading Borough Council’s Lead Member for Environment and Climate Change, Cllr Paul Gittings, said: “This is the 13th year that the Al Fresco awards have taken place – which celebrates the most hygienic food providers at the world famous Reading Festival. Festival goers want to have fun, but also be safe in the knowledge that they are buying food from one of the catering outlets that is of good quality, hygienic and up to standard.”

In order for the traders to be eligible for the award, the food trader must achieve a five rating in the food hygiene rating scheme. The 5 rated trader must also have all round good management as well as good standards of health and safety and a regard for environmental issues.

An ambitious £9.2 million pier plan for Stromness on Orkney has been given the green light after Scottish Government funding was announced by the Deputy First Minister as she arrived on Orkney for the latest Summer Cabinet.

The Copland’s Dock development will see construction of a new 100-metre pier and associated access road in Stromness, where Nicola Sturgeon is today hosting an industry event to mark the start of the grand challenge phase of the £10 million Saltire Prize competition for wave and tidal energy technology.

Together with developments at Lyness (island of Hoy) and Hatston (near Kirkwall), the Copland’s Dock pier forms part of Orkney Islands Council’s Three Ports Strategy to invest in major infrastructure projects that provide the marine renewables industry with upgraded and new-build pier and quayside facilities at key locations.

They will support the trialling of technologies at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) - the world’s first accredited testing facility for wave and tidal energy devices - and the future development of commercial-scale marine energy arrays in the Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters, as well as benefiting the fishing and aquaculture sectors.

The Deputy First Minister said:

“Orkney is the beating-heart of the global marine renewables sector. By investing in key projects such as Copland’s Dock pier, we can ensure that these islands and other Scottish communities retain our leading role as the wave and tidal energy sector moves towards industrial-scale manufacturing and deployment over the next decade.

“A Highlands & Island Enterprise-commissioned study, to be published soon, has identified that in nine years since EMEC was set up, the marine energy industry has created around 250 jobs in Orkney, boosting its economy by tens of millions of pounds. This local economic impact is predicted to increase four-fold by 2020 as test activity accelerates further and the roll-out of the Pentland Firth & Orkney Waters commercial lease sites begins in earnest.

GGF Briefs Peers On Green Deal As Statutory Instruments Are Passed

Tuesday 4 September, 2012
The Statutory Instruments (SIs) relating to the Green Deal were considered in Grand Committee by the House of Lords on July 23rd and passed. This represented the final hurdle before the SIs can be formally laid down in legislation. The SIs were considered together, before being passed individually at the end of the discussion.

This stage of the process is essentially a procedural requirement rather than an opportunity to shape legislation, however the Glass and Glazing Federation in conjunction with political consultants GK Political briefed peers prior to debate in the hope that they would raise the profile of this issue and increase pressure on the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) by making a case to Lord Marland, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, who represents DECC in the House of Lords.

Lord Dixon-Smith cited the GGF’s name a number of times whilst highlighting to the House a number of points raised in the briefing paper we also distributed to other peers and MPs, including those sitting on the relevant committees in the Commons and Lords prior to the SIs being debated by them; and also to civil servants, special advisers and Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change Greg Barker; following the publication of the SIs.

Lord Dixon-Smith’s comments emphasised the impact that the newly introduced provision in the Statutory Instruments would have upon double glazing companies , double glazing installers and disadvantaged households. He asked Lord Marland, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change, to look at this issue further.

Lord Marland was questioned by other peers about a range of concerns relating to the GD, including its attractiveness, scope, take up and impact; matters of finance and the golden rule; and complications arising from a charge being attached to the property rather than a person.

Lord Marland’s response to Lord Dixon-Smith on the concerns he raised in relation to double glazing windows and ECO and responded that people who qualify for ECO should have better standards than are the minimum for building regulations, but also agreed to write to Lord Dixon-Smith with further detail.

The GGF will contact Lord Dixon-Smith to thank him for his contribution, and to encourage him to share Lord Marland’s written response as swiftly as possible.
