Monday 6 August, 2012
· UK Green Investments (UKGI) team, based in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, announces contracts to provide initial funding of £100m to two Non-Domestic Energy Efficiency (NDEE) fund managers – Equitix and SDCL.

· Closed Loop Recycling, the world's first food-grade plastic bottle recycling plant to handle both PET and HDPE bottles, is announcing £12 million expansion plans that will double the current capacity of its Dagenham plant and create the most advanced plastics purification facility in the UK. This is expected to create and safeguard 100 jobs.

· Grupotec, the Spanish global engineering company, announces plans to expand UK ground and roof solar PV installations in the UK, creating 9 jobs and doubling the current workforce in Richmond, Surrey.

· Power Electronics to opening a UK headquarters in September, creating 4 jobs in Reading.

The Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg will set out today how the renewable energy sector is delivering vital investment and jobs to the UK. Dagenham-based firm Closed Loop Recycling is announcing plans to double its capacity, creating and safeguarding 100 jobs. This will form the most advanced plastics purification facility in the UK.

He will also announce government contracts by UK Green Investments (UKGI), which is based at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, to provide £100 million of initial funding to specialist fund managers Equitix and Sustainable Development Capital (SDCL). The fund managers will be actively encouraging foreign and domestic investment in NDEE projects, alongside UK Government funds. The Government investments pave the way for the UK Green Investment Bank (UK GIB), which is expected to open later this year following state aid approval.

The message will come in the Deputy Prime Minister’s speech opening the Government’s British Business Embassy on Energy at Lancaster House. Today’s summit is the first of two days focusing on energy that are among 18 global business summits being organised by UK Trade & Investment over the course of the Olympic Games.

The Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said:

“The UK is the sixth largest market in low carbon goods and environmental services and this Coalition Government is unreservedly committed to helping our low carbon sector thrive. We seek nothing less than a clean, green, low carbon economy.

“There is a global energy revolution underway. And the UK is not going to be left behind. We’re leading from the front. Together we find ourselves at the vanguard of one of the most dynamic, most innovative, most important industries of our time; an industry whose breakthroughs and endeavours will shape our societies for years to come; an industry that will help us build a more stable, more sustainable, more prosperous world.”

Renewable energy could deliver between 30 and 45 per cent of the UK’s energy by 2030. Today’s summit will focus on UK energy infrastructure, addressing the conversion, distribution and use of energy through the ecosystem. Particular attention will be paid to the technology areas that will make the most significant contribution to decarbonising the power sector.

Among the speakers are Sam Laidlaw, Chief executive of Centrica; Steve Holliday, CEO, National Grid PLC; Keith Howells, Chairman of Mott MacDonald; and Humphrey Cadoux-Hudson, Managing Director of Nuclear New Build at EDF Energy.

UK Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Edward Davey, who is also speaking at the event, said:

“The UK Government is taking the necessary steps to develop a secure, clean energy mix, and this is opening up massive, long-term investment opportunities.

“Whether it’s our surging renewables sector or North Sea oil and gas exploration, new nuclear power or carbon capture and storage, there has never been a more exciting time to be in the UK energy sector.

“Britain is one of the easiest places to do business in the world and I am determined to maintain our reputation as a stable destination for energy investment.”

UK-international business

International business to be announced by firms at today’s summit includes:

Closed Loop Recycling, the world's first food-grade plastic bottle recycling plant to handle both PET and HDPE bottles, is announcing £12 million expansion plans that will double the current capacity of its Dagenham plant and create the most advanced plastics purification facility in the UK. Construction is likely to commence in early 2013 and when finished will divert a further 100,000 tonnes of carbon emissions and result in increased food-grade HDPE output, improved sorting facilities and better economies of scale. Closed Loop Recycling was born out of Closed Loop in Australia to replicate its recycling achievements during the 'green' Sydney Olympics. It is a London Olympic legacy business which has helped to stimulate UK consumers to recycle more. It will lead to the creation of potentially hundreds of new green jobs throughout the packaging and recycling industries, including more than 100 new or safeguarded jobs at the Dagenham site itself.

UK Green Investments (UKGI) team, based in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, has announced contracts to provide initial funding of £100m to two specialist managers – Equitix and SDCL. The fund managers will invest the funds in small-scale NDEE infrastructure projects. UKGI’s money will be co-invested pari passu (on market terms and meeting the requirements for state aid exemptions and approvals) with private investors on each deal. The fund managers will be actively encouraging foreign and domestic investment alongside UK Government funds. The Government investments pave the way for the UK Green Investment Bank (UK GIB), which is expected to open later this year following state aid approval.

Grupotec, a Spanish global engineering company, has announced the expansion of its Richmond office to support a number of new UK ground and roof solar PV installations that will make Grupotec one of the biggest companies in the UK in terms of installed power. The office will increase from its current three staff to 7 at the beginning of August (3 Spanish and 4 British) and to more than 12 in December when the majority of the projects will become operational.

Power Electronics, a multinational Spanish company with expertise in industrial automation and solar technology, has announced it is opening a UK headquarters in September. The UK is one of its main markets for solar inverters (which convert energy from solar panels into current that can be fed into the electricity grid). Power Electronics UK will initially have at least 3 technical engineers and a sales manager. With good growth forecast in the UK, in both the solar and the industrial sectors, the company expects to grow the office substantially over the coming months.

Factfile

The energy industry contributes 3.9 per cent of the UK’s GDP and employs about 173,000 people (7 per cent of industrial employment). It accounts for 9.9 per cent of total investment in the UK.

The UK already exports around $30 billion of energy-related goods and services each year, a growing proportion of which is in the low carbon sector.

The UK’s notable strengths across the energy industries – oil and gas, renewables, nuclear and thermal power generation – include project management, major contracting, design engineering, asset and operational management, design and manufacturing of advanced equipment, research and development, training and education, professional and financial services. All of these are delivered with a total commitment to health, safety and the environment.

2. The Government's economic policy objective is to achieve 'strong, sustainable and balanced growth that is more evenly shared across the country and between industries.' It set four ambitions in the ‘Plan for Growth’ (PDF 1.7MB), published at Budget 2011:

· To create the most competitive tax system in the G20

· To make the UK the best place in Europe to start, finance and grow a business

· To encourage investment and exports as a route to a more balanced economy

· To create a more educated workforce that is the most flexible in Europe.

Work is underway across Government to achieve these ambitions, including progress on more than 250 measures as part of the Growth Review. Developing an Industrial Strategy gives new impetus to this work by providing businesses, investors and the public with more clarity about the long-term direction in which the Government wants the economy to travel.

3. The UK GIB is designed to accelerate private sector investment in the UK’s transition to a green economy. Offshore wind power generation, waste processing and recycling, energy from waste generation, non-domestic energy efficiency and support for the Green Deal will be the first priority sectors for the UK GIB, subject to approval by the European Commission. The Bank is expected to be fully operational later this year, subject to state aid approval. In the meantime, the Government is paving the way for its establishment of by making investments, on commercial terms, in green infrastructure. These investments are being made by its BIS based UKGI team. The competition seeking experienced fund managers to manage Government investments in non domestic energy efficiency projects was launched in March 2012.

Halifax doubles guaranteed student overdraft for 2012

Monday 6 August, 2012
Halifax has today unveiled the details of its 2012 student account offering, announcing that it will now offer the largest guaranteed overdraft in the market from day one.

From 16 August 2012, all successful applicants will benefit from a guaranteed interest free overdraft of £1000 from when they open their account, up to a maximum of £3000, the largest amount available in the market.

Product details:
• Guaranteed £1000 interest-free overdraft from day one for all successful applicants
• Maximum interest-free overdraft up to £3000, subject to credit approval
• Interest free overdraft available for up to five years, depending on course length, and for a year after graduation
• A Visa Debit card – plus the ability to personalise the card for free
• Account can be managed over the phone, online and in branch
• Commission-free travel money

Data from Halifax demonstrates that the average overdraft by the end of October for a student using the facility is around £700, in excess of the current guaranteed £500 level.
This means that students are either applying for an extension to their overdraft early on, or are incurring fees. The move to increase the minimum interest-free overdraft to £1000 replaces the need for an extension, and greatly reduces the risk of incurring fees.

Anthony Warrington, director of current accounts , Halifax, comments:

"We all know that going to university can be an expensive time, but the first term can be the most expensive of all. Within those first few weeks students often have to shell out for accommodation and tuition for the year, new books for their course, laptops, membership fees for clubs and societies on top of everything else. That's why we've doubled the guaranteed interest-free overdraft level for all successful applicants. Now that stands a £1000, they've got the help from us when they need it, and don't have to worry about any fees they might rack up by slipping into an unplanned overdraft."

"The Halifax student account is a simple, straightforward proposition, offering the best interest- free overdraft on the market, and doesn't compromise on real long term value".

Wood 4 Floors discount deals: get high quality, engineered oak flooring for less

Wednesday 8 August, 2012
UK flooring specialists Wood 4 Floors offer their exclusive, engineered brown smoked oak boards at a mark-down price. For a limited time only all customers can purchase precision manufactured planks at just £25.35 (ex. VAT).

Wood4Floors traditional grade, smoked, brown oak flooring is now available with a generous 20% discount. The price mark-down and easy install of this product is enough to tempt many homeowners into remodelling. It gives them the opportunity to get a beautiful, traditional, brown oak floor – at a knock-down price.

The precision engineered oak boards, exclusive to Wood4Floors are 150mm wide and 14mm thick. Engineered timber floors have many advantages over using solid-oak boards. Aside from the fact it’s a considerably cheaper option, the flooring is more stable and easier to install.

Planks can be glued down with flexible adhesive or floated over most subfloors without the use of nails. They’re also ideal for use with under-floor heating. The engineered construction makes them inherently dimensionally stable and less susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity.

Traditional wood flooring is now highly desirable in the UK market place. There has been a definite trending shift where modern floor coverings such as vinyl’s and tiles are becoming redundant in favour of classic wood floors.

Wood4Floors’ smoked brown oak plank is a classic, distinctive choice that ticks all the boxes. The traditional grade timber has more character marks for a natural finish. Straight and wild grain figuring, mineral elements, and more colour variation gives it unique characteristics.

The classic dark colour is attractive, will never go out of style, and will look richer over time. The oiled finish is advantageous too, not only does it make the wood look more natural, but it penetrates deeper, has a great surface density and is therefore more resistant to abrasive movements.

The benefits of wooden floors in the modern home are significant. The decline in popularity of carpets in recent years has been attributed to widely publicised reports that deem them unhealthy. Carpets trap and harbour dust mites and moulds, which means a poor quality of life for the millions of UK allergy sufferers. 85% of people with asthma are also allergic to dust mites. Wood floors mean cleaner air for a healthier home.

Despite the recession, people seem more willing to invest in quality wood floor coverings in favour of inferior laminate products. That’s no surprise. The durability of wooden floors means they can last a lifetime. The modern mentality of replacing floor coverings every few years because of stains or wear and tear doesn’t seem so much of an attractive prospect. Customers have come to realise that this actually costs more in the long-run. Even higher-maintenance oiled floors are coming back into fashion for the simple reason that scratches and damage can be repaired, unlike with lacquered floors.

As well as the durability factor, you can be confident that wood will never go out of fashion. It’s a natural material that will suit every interior style. Wood4Floors smoked brown oak floor works well in a traditional property, giving a sense of grandeur and antiquity. It is also neutral enough to suit a contemporary design.

Free Samples of the floor can be obtained from Wood4Floors website. Those in the London area can visit their showroom in Forest Hill. Delivery is normally within 2 or 3 days and a fitting service is available if required.

Wood 4 Floors have been suppliers to the flooring trade for over 25 years. They provide a quality product at competitive prices. to trade customers and homeowners across the UK. You can browse their full range on their website www.wood4floors.co.uk

Theatre Production Lifts the Curtain on the Stories of Sex Trafficked Women

Thursday 9 August, 2012
The issue of sex trafficking will be explored in a new contemporary play, which involves audiences walking around a representation of a brothel.

The unusual concept will see the audience guided through different rooms of a residential house, as they witness and engage with the stories of characters who live and work there. The main characters, based on the real accounts of six girls who have been victims of trafficking in the UK, will be portrayed by actresses and actors from Anglia Ruskin University and '20Twenty Productions'.

‘The House of Secrets’ was previously performed over two days in Cambridge in May 2012, and will be reproduced in East London, Stratford on the 22nd and 23rd of September 2012. The work has been developed by the arts enterprise ‘Ophelia Circus’ – which has been set up by Alice Johnson, an MA Graduate in 'Contemporary Theatre Studies', in order to explore different issues through theatre in various sites and locations. She was granted funding for her work by ‘UnLtd' in 2011, thanks to the online votes of the public.

‘I wanted to remove the barriers between audience and performer, by bringing the audience into the space in which these women would live and work. The result is quite effective, and delivers the message about this hidden issue in a very different way than a documentary would do. The audiences can actually speak and engage with representations of the girls and learn the truth about their lives directly,’ Alice said.

There is some dispute about the actual numbers of victims in the UK, which remains vague due to many victims remaining undetected. A report by the Home Affairs Select Committee, 'The Trade in Human Beings: Human Trafficking in the UK' in 2009 estimated that there are 5,000 trafficked women in the UK, whilst the End Violence against Women Campaign (EVAW) has argued that that number is closer to 10,000.

Whatever the figure, the issue is too easily kept out of sight and mind. 'The House of Secrets' was created to raise awareness, reminding us that victims could easily be hidden in a house within our neighbourhoods, or on the streets that we live on.

An audience member said, 'No matter how much or little one knows about human trafficking, there is nothing to prepare you for 'The House of Secrets'! The portrayal of the story of women who have been trafficked left a lasting impact on me. It was realistic, interactive and thought provoking.' Olinka Gould, member of Cambridge Act for Justice (supported by national anti-trafficking organisation, Hope for Justice)

Tickets are available for a limited time at a price of £6, with all profits going towards future performance work from the 'House of Secrets' tickets site . The performance location will only be provided to ticket buyers, who will be sent a secret meeting point and guided to the house nearby. The organisers are also seeking local volunteers for the event, to act as extras.

UK E-Commerce Start-Up Launches Ground-Breaking Website

Monday 13 August, 2012
A UK integrated digital media e-commerce start-up has launched a ground-breaking website, pioneering new e-commerce frontiers in single-view interface and fully integrated digital media space, raising the bar in online digital media experience and opening up what could possibly trigger the next generation of e-commerce websites.

Mekobia is a whole new concept in integrated digital media e-commerce launched recently in beta version and aimed at providing integrated digital products and services to consumers as well as digital content creators, product manufacturers and service providers like never before. It currently offers Artist and Brand Merchandise,Carrying Cases and other Accessories, Mobile, Consumer Electronic, Computer and Peripheral Devices in the UK, together with Integrated Marketing, including Advertising, Promotion, Showcase and Listings. A host of other innovative services are in the pipeline, aimed at fulfilling the company’s goal in bringing together dedicated e-commerce and vibrant social media on a single platform, like never before.

Mekobia intends to provide a truly unique digital media community and platform with wholly integrated in-depth services and far better user experience than offered at present. Ultimately, it aims to harmonise the world’s digital media needs on an easily accessible ecosystem, which extends beyond the virtual realm, bridging the gap between virtual and physical interactions. It also plans to allocate a proportion of its profits towards projects aimed at promoting a better global society.

The difference between the Mekobia website and other sites is immediately noticeable on loading the website. Its unique appearance, integral video player and well thought-out layout are aimed at enhancing conventional viewing process with better user experience. Unlike conventional websites which are generally based on multiple page displays, Mekobia relies on a single-view interface, which enables text, image, video and other content to appear in dedicated sections of a single viewing page, without the interruption of page loads; giving the user a somewhat “panoramic” sense of place on the website and a feeling that content is delivered to, rather than followed by the user.

Mekobia is an integrated digital media e-commerce website based in London, UK. Its was conceived in 2009, as an integrated digital media community, primarily to provide a better online user experience, while preserving its original objective in extending the digital economy to developing markets around the world. With the first key regional base originally planned to be located in Nigeria, this initial strategic association inspired the name and icon of the website brand. The name, "Mekobia" was invented by fusing words and letter of an Igbo phrase, Mmeko obi oha or ora (depending on local dialect), which translates directly to "interaction of the community heart"; simply meaning, "unified community relations" or "universal harmony", reflecting the essence of the website. The distinctive Mekobia icon was created by deconstructing the first "M" of "Mmeko" in the phrase. Mekobia end-user distribution services are currently available in the UK, but will be extended worldwide soon.

Equity Release Council Gives ‘Much Needed Boost’ to Industry

Tuesday 14 August, 2012
The formation of The Equity Release Council looks set to have a positive impact on the equity release industry, according to Jan Bull from 55 Plus Equity Release.

Equity release has been the subject of much discussion for many years, particularly after the economic crisis at the end of the 1980s, which left thousands of retired homeowners in the position of negative equity. Since then, equity release has left a somewhat bitter taste in the mouths of British consumers.

However, the equity release industry has since become much more tightly regulated, with the protection of consumers being a key focus. The recently formed Equity Release Council aims to improve the industry, by promoting awareness of equity release products, whilst improving consumer confidence by introducing tight regulations that members must adhere to.

The Equity Release Council recently revealed that the value of equity released in the UK has increased by almost a quarter in the last 12 months. It is thought by many that this trend looks set to continue, with more retirees taking advantage of equity release deals.

Jan Bull from 55 Plus Equity Release commented:

“The formation of The Equity Release Council has undoubtedly given a much needed boost to the industry. Consumer confidence appears to be on the up, and this looks set to continue for the foreseeable future”.

Rapala Launches New Multi-Brand eCommerce Site Powered by Demandware

New site gives anglers the one and only place to find every item made by Rapala

London, UK. – August 14, 2012 –   Demandware®, Inc. (NYSE: DWRE), a leader in on-demand ecommerce, today announced that Rapala, a leading global fishing equipment company, has launched its first ecommerce site, rapala.com , on the Demandware Commerce platform. The site currently represents 10 Rapala brands, all sharing a single shopping cart.

Rapala cites its creation back to 1936, when the Finnish fisherman Lauri Rapala crafted his first fishing lure out of cork, tinfoil, and melted photographic negatives. Today Rapala is the world’s leading fishing lure brand, selling its full line of lures, knives, tools and accessories to fishermen in more than 140 countries worldwide.

With a large multi-brand portfolio, Rapala’s B2C strategy of providing the one and only place where anglers can find every item made by Rapala was easily achieved with Demandware’s storefront. Until now, only a limited selection of the most common Rapala items could be found via online retailers. By providing Rapala with the capabilities to create a central site for all of its brands, Demandware is enabling the company to deliver a mall-like shopping experience that maximizes order size. Rather than visiting separate brand sites to purchase different items, fishing enthusiasts can now easily browse and shop for all their fishing equipment across brands from one easy-to-navigate site; add items to their online “Tackle Box;” and then conveniently check out from one central shopping cart.

“We needed a commerce partner that could provide us with the tools and flexibility to support and grow our new online channel; we’ve certainly found that ideal partner in Demandware,” said Naomi Dwyer, vice president of IT at Rapala. “We are excited to launch our first online store in the U.S. which provides a virtual destination where fishing enthusiasts can easily and efficiently shop across all of our brands.”

With Demandware, Rapala benefits from:

A feature-rich and flexible platform that empowers its ecommerce and marketing teams to rapidly make site changes and launch new brands quickly and easily

A scalable and secure infrastructure that minimizes risk and allows Rapala’s small IT department to focus on innovation and growth, rather than managing software and adding infrastructure

New capabilities delivered quietly and seamlessly through automatic upgrades, without disrupting Rapala’s daily operations

Tuesday 14 August, 2012
Sunday 12th August saw the riding of the 17th PO Prelikiji Bioterme Cycling Marathon in north east Slovenia.

Paul Wadkin a keen cyclist from Yorkshire now living in Slovenia, was taking part.

Back home it was the final day of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Paul comments:

‘From very early morning hundreds of people of all ages and abilities were arriving at Bioterme Mala Nedelja to ride or just to watch and enjoy the event.’

‘I have never seen such enthusiasm and support for a cycling event; the London Olympics have clearly been inspirational.’

Sponsored by the Radenska Water Company in conjunction with the Hotel Bioterme the marathon is not a race but a fun sporting event.

By 10 am on Sunday 523 cyclists ranging from kids to pensioners, fun to serious riders, individuals and teams plus all their supporters were in place for the ride.

There was a choice of distance to ride 22km, 43km and 63km. Paul went for the 63km distance with its 3 big climbs.

‘The atmosphere was absolutely fantastic all along the route, and whilst some did a bit of serious riding most took it more leisurely enjoying the fabulous views from the hilltops and stopping at the feeding stations for fruit cake, fresh apple juice and a good natter!’
.
‘Not all the bikes were in good order and there were many taking a breather to mend a puncture or do a running service. I was riding my hybrid Rixe mountain bike which I had cleaned and serviced the day before. At one point I hit 67km an hour on the downhill section at Stara Cesta, thank goodness for disk brakes!’

‘I had just reached the top of one of the big 14% climbs leading into the Jerusalem hills when I got a call from my mate and had to cycle back down and fix his bike and then ride back up!’

‘After the ride, back at the hotel Bioterme the prizes were announced and music and dancing followed, a memorable sight as over 500 cyclists still in their Lycra riding gear danced the Polka!’

The prize for the oldest male participant went to 83 year old Siegfried Schubert and Erika Pangrcic at 70 was the oldest female participant. The award for the largest team entry went to team Tondach the local roof tile manufacturer.

Paul runs Simply Cycling Slovenia who offer cycling holidays in this region of Slovenia and neighbouring Austria. www.simplycyclingslovenia.com.

Prlekija is one of the finest areas of Europe for cycling and activity holidays. It is easily reached by motorway from the Channel ports or by air from London Stansted to Graz.

Next year Paul is hoping to assemble groups from the UK to take part in this great cycling event allowing them to experience the beautiful countryside of Prlekija and join in with the friendly and hospitable people of the Region.

Photos of the event have been posted at: http://www.prlekija-on.net/galerija/1795/kolesarski-maraton-po-prlekiji.html

Bloomsbury Lanes has slowly evolved into a hub for the select few. Tucked away amongst the many garden squares within one of London's many hotspots it’s quite possible you have walked passed it. If you’ve been unfortunate enough not to have visited the inside then you’ve simply missed out; it consists of bowling, ping pong, pool, a diner, a cinema and if that wasn’t enough there is a stage and dancefloor ready for all those dazzling moves.

Music without a doubt is essential to the running of Bloomsbury. The stage has served as a solid stepping stone on the paths of Hot Chip, VV Brown, Cage the Elephant and Scouting for Girls, attracted a host of icons such as Fun Lovin Criminal, Anvil, Anthrax and Maxi Jazz. It was decided we needed a new event to entertain the masses and this lead to the launch of Bloomsbury’s Back to Back Weekends. It’s weekend after weekend of good music from September to December; events will range from themed nights to the best DJ’s and live entertainment.

Tuesday 14 August, 2012
Online courier services specialist Parcel2Go has called on UK businesses to steal a march on the competition by making use of the cheap delivery services available through the internet.

A recent study carried out by navigation technology firm Trimble discovered that UK households spend an average of £136 a year on delivery charges, after purchasing goods through the internet. Three-quarters of respondents said fast delivery was very important to them when buying online, while 29 per cent of people polled said high delivery costs were an issue.

Parcel2Go, which offers a wide range of parcel delivery services online from international courier service options to next-day UK courier services, has said UK firms can learn from these survey results.

"The fact that households are happy to spend this much each year for the convenience of ordering online is yet another sign of the strength of internet retailing," said Richard Mercer, marketing director at Parcel2Go.

"Once again consumers have highlighted the fact that fast, inexpensive delivery options are what counts when they're looking to buy online and British companies should take note. By organising for their deliveries to be sent with reliable couriers, offering cost-effective services, businesses can keep overheads down while ensuing customers receive their goods as quickly as possible."

City Link, Parcelforce, Yodel and TNT are just some of the top courier companies currently offering UK and international services through Parcel2Go's website. Businesses can find out how much they can save by using Parcel2Go's Quick Quote tool. Parcel tracking services are also available through the site.

Parcel2Go tells technology lovers to let parcel delivery experts keep their iPhones safe

The number of people looking to trade in their iPhones ahead of the release of the next version of Apple's smartphone has skyrocketed in recent days, leading online parcel delivery specialist Parcel2Go to urge sellers to make sure they only ship the devices off with reliable courier firms.

According to auction and retail website eBay, the three days to August 1 saw a 70 per cent week-on-week increase in the number of people looking to use the firm's iPhone instant sale scheme. Close to 100,000 people were said to have considered selling their current handset during the period, as rumours circulated that Apple would launch its next version of the smartphone early next month.

Parcel2Go, which works to provide eBay's buyers and sellers with reliable and cheap courier services, has reminded technology lovers not to put their devices at risk, and to only ship them off using trusted courier companies .

Richard Mercer, marketing director at Parcel2Go, said: "The launch of a new Apple iPhone always leads to a spike in the number of people wanting to trade in their old handsets before investing in the latest version. We're just reminding anyone who is preparing to ship their phone off, be it to eBay, a commercial re-seller or an individual buyer, to make sure that they employ the services of a reliable courier company to ensure it is delivered safe and sound."

Anyone selling a smartphone through the internet is also advised to make sure that they have used the correct packaging to ensure their item arrives at its destination in one piece. Using new packing cartons is recommended as second-hand ones become weaker each time they are reused. Triple corrugated packaging is recommended, as is internal protection such as bubble wrap.

"Making sure items are well wrapped before handing them over to a courier company is just as important as the choice of courier," Richard added. "Selecting the correct level of insurance cover is also vital."

Thursday 16 August, 2012
The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) has accepted Alan Burgess’ resignation as Chairman of the Home Improvement Executive (HIE).

Alan has been a long-time member and director of the Glass and Glazing Federation since January 2008, and has made his decision due to his many commercial interests which includes Masterframe Windows Ltd, the review website doubleglazingcompanies.com and several other online businesses.

On his departure Alan commented; “Representing the interests of all GGF members (often with opposing views), has been challenging yet immensely interesting and I hope most members feel the Federation has moved on considerably in the last 4 ½ years and is set firm to deliver results to serve them well, in the coming years.”

Nigel Rees, GGF Group Chief Executive added “We are extremely grateful for all the time and effort that Alan has been able to give not just to the GGF but the whole GGF Group. He has helped to continue the momentum of advancing the needs and support of the window industry. We are always mindful of the time and commitment that Members give to the Federation, especially office holders, which is invaluable to allow us to fully represent the Industry, but understand that this commitment has to be balanced with the needs of their companies.”

Alan remains a keen supporter of the GGF and the work it does for its growing membership comprised of double glazing installers and double glazing suppliers .

In his resignation letter to the GGF he wished them every success as they face the challenges ahead with Green Deal, Building Regulations 2013 and CE marking all set to have an impact on the industry in the next few years.

The GGF Home Improvement Executive is due to meet in the next few weeks, to decide who will succeed Alan as Chairman.

Government joins forces with industry to tackle late payments

Thursday 16 August, 2012
The Government has today reaffirmed its commitment to help improve the supply chain cashflow for UK firms by joining forces with small business representative bodies to tackle the issue of late payment.

Members of the Small Business Economic Forum (SBEF) have all signed an agreement to work together to develop new measures to ensure that payments are secured and made on time.

Business and Enterprise Minister and Chair of the SBEF Mark Prisk said:

“Large firms have a responsibility to ensure their suppliers are paid on time. These payments are vital to businesses in the supply chain which rely on contracts with larger firms to thrive and need confidence that they can plan for the future without worrying that payments will be late.

“Working with industry bodies to encourage their members to sign the Prompt Payment Code and commit to making payments on time is a significant step forward. We mustn’t be complacent and stop here but I hope to see businesses across the country joining us to help ensure payments are reaching suppliers on time.”

Philip King, Chief Executive of the Institute of Credit Management said:

“Collaboration across businesses and with the support of Government is critical to tackling the vital importance of prompt payment, which is why we have been proud to host and administer the Government’s Prompt Payment Code. Prompt payment and treating suppliers fairly needs to become part of our business culture, and the benefits of therefore becoming a ‘preferred customer’ more clearly communicated and understood.

“Our advice, and the message in our Managing Cashflow Guides published with BIS, is that suppliers should not be bullied into accepting unfavourable terms from their customers, and that they should negotiate payment as part of the bigger trading relationship.”

Phil Orford, Chief Executive of the Forum of Private Business said:

“Late payment forces businesses to close, plain and simple. Ensuring small firms are paid on time and in full is key to their future growth and prosperity, and also to the UK’s economic prospects.

“We need more large companies at the top of the supply chain to commit to the principle of prompt payment, to understand that squeezing their suppliers out of business ultimately means less choice for customers, but small business owners also have a responsibility to address late payment by implementing cash flow management as a standard business processes.

“We are providing the advice, guidance and support entrepreneurs need, backing this statement and supporting the Government’s drive to help smaller firms know their rights and understand there are measures they can embrace to minimise the problem of late payment, while also working with large firms to encourage a culture of prompt payment.”

The statement signed by the SBEF encourages their members to:

· Proactively agree payment terms before delivering orders.

· Raise complaints over late payment from Prompt Payment Code signatories and use legislation already in place to pursue late payers.

· Use electronic invoicing where possible.

· Follow the advice in Get Paid!, a recent guide for small business which contains tips and hints for suppliers and customers.

To date 1,115 businesses have signed up to the prompt payment code. Government is working with businesses of all sizes to encourage them to sign up to the code.

Think carefully before taking on more debt

$

Friday 17 August, 2012
The Debt Advisory Centre has advised would-be borrowers to look carefully at how they've fared with their debts over the past 12 months, so they can decide how best to deal with their borrowing now.

The comments follow research from MoneySupermarket.com, which revealed that in the wake of the financial crisis, a third of people in the UK are less likely to use credit products.

However, of the thirty-four million people in Britain who currently use some kind of credit product, 10% are more likely to borrow since the downturn. Of these people, 65% said they have needed to borrow more in the past few years, 17% are using credit rather than turning to their savings and 11% say they're taking advantage of lower rates.

In light of this, looking back on how you've dealt with your debts over the past year should help you decide whether borrowing money really is a good idea in today's climate - or whether you need to focus on improving your finances first.

A spokesperson for the Debt Advisory Centre commented: "Borrowing some extra cash, whether on a credit card, overdraft or other line of credit, is always something of a risk, and in the current climate, it's more important than ever to be sure you're on track with your money.

"Looking back can be an excellent way to start planning ahead. With this in mind, it's important to consider how you've managed with your debts in the past year. Reviewing your debts and asking yourself a few questions should help you better plan your finances for the next 12 months.

"How much debt do you currently have? Is it a manageable amount that you'll be able to clear in the foreseeable future - or have you still got a long way to go before you've repaid everything in full? Reviewing last year's bank statements can help you understand where you stood with your debts at this point a year ago, and exactly how things have changed since then.

"If you feel you've made good progress with your debts and are generally managing your finances well, you may decide that borrowing some extra money is a reasonable way to cover the cost of some new clothes for work, or your kids' back-to-school costs.

"On the other hand, if your finances are not so good, saving up over the next few months could give you a way of affording expenses like these without borrowing. You could boost your savings pot by making cutbacks - e.g. by switching to a cheaper gas provider or reducing your food shopping bills - or boosting your income, perhaps by working some overtime. It's all a question of what works for you.

"Some people, though, will find that they're really struggling with their debts. If this is the case, taking on further credit should obviously be avoided - but getting some professional debt help and advice could help you find a way of putting your debts behind you. There are various debt solutions available - and no matter how big or small the problem is, there could be one that's right for you.

"For example, even if you have a large amount of unsecured debt that you can't realistically hope to repay in a reasonable timeframe, an IVA [Individual Voluntary Arrangement] could help you repay what you can afford over 5 years - and write off any outstanding debt that you can't pay off on successful completion. An IVA will, however, affect your credit rating for six years.

"A good debt adviser can discuss your options with you and help you find the best solution for your situation."

-ENDS-
